    Default fibercoupled 9Watt-IR-diodes ...

    ... was testing/playing around with some of the fibercoupled 9Watt@975nm-diodes, that are used for pumping energy into fiber-lasers, for some time ...

    Now I've started a sort of "community-project" in two German forums, to assemble some modules with them for laser-engraving or other applications, like soldering or SLS with dark powder.

    Here are some photos of the last actions:

    - three of the "simple" drivers, based on parallel wired LM338 as constant current sources, capable of pulsing or CW currents, configurable in "steps" from 0.5Amps to 8.4Amps:

    With 9Watts only you're limited to powders from eutectic alloys or preheating the building area to some hundred centigrades.

    I have some 25Watts diodes too (but not enough to give them away) and have some plans (and already assembled 6x-head) to combine several to many of the diode-modules into one spot of around 0.5mm diameter ... with summed powers of up to some hundred Watts this would be enough to weld solid steel ...

    I like how the beams come n from the top separate. That is a cool effect. Looks like Star Trek.

    ... yes, was thinking how to realize the "death-star" configuration too

    The best chance until now is to use some (laser-illuminated) glass rods and a DPSS-resonator in the middle ...

    ... no, the "real thing" would be a laser-beam-cone, ending mid-air and emitting a single beam from the joint (like seen in the star-wars video).

    Another "trick" is to place a black ring or short piece of tube in the joint center (maybe too with "illuminated" glass fibers) and shoot a beam through the ring/tube

    I have quite a few 25-30 watt diodes I'd like to fire up...

    No need to polish the fiber end ? Will this work with higher power levels ?
    What are you using for the focusing assembly ?
    Is a schematic of the LM338 driver available ?

    ... previously I've done some "rough" cleaving with a fine scalpel knife and used this with powers of up to 20 Watts out of the 105µm-fiber -- but too burnt some fiber ends with 1 second CW-power of >22 Watts.

    Now, with a comercial cleaving tool the break is much smoother, so should be good for more than 30 Watts without polishing ... AFAIK some other companies use "cleaving only" for powers of up to 80 Watts !!

    I've found a source for aspherical lenses here in Germany, which only sells to companies and only in "quantities" - so I have to buy a count of 50 lenses minimum ... bought actually 60 lenses for my actual "community project" ...

    This 5x-driver a pretty "basic" and "discrete" version with predefined current steps, so decided to publish the schematics free ... have two other types with analogue and 'intelligent' controlling, which will stay "closed" for now.

    So here the schematics of the 5x LM338 driver:
