Nice! Looks like you are having good fun. Now can you please reduce this to a small handheld size and sell it to the rest of us? ;) A video would be nice if it won’t ruin the camera. David

Continuing playing with my laser blaster. Today I managed to penetrate 6mm thick aluminium plate with two shots at 450J output energy. It is quite spectacular -- the beam causes blindingly bright flash of burning aluminium with a huge jet of plasma with a particularly loud bang. Also I improved...

I am far more active over at LPF than I have been here and I have been following LaserBuilder's many projects over the past year or so. He has an uncanny way of finding for free what we pay big $$$ here for. His last project was a large Nd: GLASS laser. You don't see those everyday either. Glad to...

I am looking forward to my 575nm laser to ship sometime today. I am far more active on LPF and Dr.Laser over there has received two of these. One he has done a teardown of to show what is going on inside. This seems to be a great deal to come along at the same time as all the new Sharp direct diode...

Yes, and these "spikes" has a negative polarity, which is much more dangerous for a laser diode. But.. low-impedance metal resistors have negligibly small parasitic inductance, which can be neglected. And in any case, these "spikes" (if they have a dangerous amplitude) will be absorbed by the...

The low powered (and low cost! *warn :) ) ones are DPSS. We have quite a few higher powered (several watts) OPSL in 577nm and 480nm, but these still have the "traditional" price tag :(

I encourage you to continue with that mindset as long as you can. Right now you have the flexibility to do things like that, but later in life you may not. Plus the rest of us love the pictures you've been sharing! :) Adam

Cool! Let me know how that turns out. :) Pretty sure Jason is going to try to make it as well. My guess is that Chris will be there, but I'll let him confirm that. I will be bringing my Vortex to both events for sure though. (Now is a really good time to pick one of those up, btw. See this...

Its a long drive, but I am in active discussion with the Mrs. . . Laserjock: Will you be there that weekend? If so, will you be bringing some quads? I have questions. :) More to follow. -David

OK, that's great! Someone much more knowledgeable than I told me that wire wound resistors may generate a spike when the magnetic field they create collapses when powering down. As such, wouldn't a metal or carbon film resistor be a better fit? Maybe this one? Also, can you identify which...

This is a bit of a feeler. Here is a DMX board i have been using in burst boxes I have in my hire stock for a few years now. I have 10 kits pretty much ready to go. If they are popular, I will make a lot more. The board has a white OLED display, NV storage of DMX channel and hard output...

I am very grateful to the circumstances and conditions that I live in. I don't have any wife, my parents came to terms with my hobby, I hold only two cats at home, I'm not burdened with family issues... So I can allow myself all that crazy stuff that many people find absolutely inadmissable at...

That is my favorite show that I ever did. Second to fireflies. You would not happen to have retrained a copy of the shows that could be made available. Have to ask Bill if he cares first. Not sure how the copy right is setup. All my shows are free for the asking.

That's a very specific reference there, Rich... Makes me wonder why you're looking at her pores so closely in the first place... On second thought, scratch that. I don't want to know! >:) Good to see you back, BTW, even if you're not doing all-things-laser these days. I...

I've run into the issue of not being able to see attachments as well. Two things seem to work: 1) Right click and select "open in new tab". Often this will immediately load the image and you can see it. 2) Sometimes when you try the above trick, the forum will ask you to log in again, even...

There is a known problem with the built-in search engine for the forum, and sadly it's not anything that will be easy to fix. Your best bet is to use Google with the modifier "site: photonlexicon.com". That usually gets you to where you want to be. :) Here are two sites that weren't listed...

buffo replied to a thread Gain Medium in Lasers, All Kinds.
HAHA! Love this analogy. :) But do remember that not all lasers are designed with maximum power output as their goal. Many designs actually eschew ultimate peak power in favor of other performance factors like long coherence length, lower divergence, greater pumping efficiency, and so on. ...

Just to clarify, the laser that Steve and Marc have been discussing (the e-bay link) is a low-power, DPSS design, right? Because the one that Daniel Briggs posted (including the link to the AC Lasers Facebook post) is an OPSL design. So much greater output power, superior modulation, and very...

Probably easier to find a YAG rod (all those surplus rangefinder units, right?), but you just know you'd rather have the ruby... There was a point where I seriously considered buying a raw synthetic ruby boule and then paying someone to do all the finishing work on it, but it turns out that...

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was thinking, Steve! "He definitely wants it", as in he just wants your collection, or he wants it because he has a plan to display it? Because the two goals are very different... I had the chance to speak with a few people who were granted access to the...
