Projecting building outlines?

Sorry if this has been covered before, I have looked but not even sure what it is called?

I am wondering how a building for instance has it's outline beamed onto it?

The only picture I can find that I can share is my local papers picture of the old pier in Brighton: http://www.theargus.co.uk/news/50006..._green_lasers/

This is not any kind of automatic process.

A good start would be to take a photograph of the building from far enough away as to minimize the distortion of single point 3D perspective.

Then open that photograph into some kind of laser vector art editor and trace your lines over the photo.

Then you need to place your laser projector at a distance away from the front of the building and adjust the scan angle and general aim of the projector to get it to match the features of the building as well as possible.

I was also wondering about the possibility of using a webcam and software like lasercam to do it?

I suppose the only way is try it out!

I believe that Rob took a photograph of the building from a certain position in the car park. He marked the point on the ground indicating the exact position of the camera. He then opened QS and used the digital photograph as a background image, then it was a reasonably easy process to draw the laser outline on the photograph of building. Next he took the laser projector outside and placed it in exactly the same position as was used to take the photograph. He then switched on the laser projector and made a few small adjustments to the outline image he drew earlier. The result is the photograph you see above :)

Ace, I'm gonna have to get myself along to one of these meets!

Its pretty much the same as a lot of projection maping. They take the picture from a decent range, then draw round the parts to create masks. It can then be adjusted on site by using geometric correction for the zone.
What is most interesting is how you can then apply effects to the image, or create different frames each highlighting a different part of the image, so you can mix and match, just do the windows, etc
