I have a room at the Embassy Suites as well with singlemode and CountFunkula. Happy to offer a lift.

Ok, nobody wanted to do the AirBnB so I'm also now booked at the Embassy Suites (for 2x the cost).
They have a nice big lobby for late-night shenanigans. If there's enough of us booked maybe we can talk them letting us use one of the meeting rooms like we had in Conover.
Damn!!!
I wish I would have known so many people were staying at Embasy Suites. I would have booked there too.
I just got off the phone with Holiday Inn and if I cancel my reservation I lose my deposit equal to 1 night!
Guess I'm stuck at HI.
Is the Embassy Suites everyone is referring to this one:
Embassy Suites by Hilton Newark Wilmington South
Booked at HIE in Elkton but thinking of changing.
Thanks!
I just had this thought. I am sure someone has thought/brought this up before... Is Delaware really considered the South? Hahaha... It's not where you are now... it's where you started out.
I've run into this before. Anything due west of Wilmington is most definitely "south" Delaware. Once we were driving over the DMB into DE and our alternator shit the bed. About two miles before the Newark rest area (now the Biden Welcome Center) we lost all electrics and in one mile I lost the motor too. So I shifted into neutral and literally coasted into the rest area, into the lower empty parking lot and parked.
When on the phone with AAA tow truck, he kept saying am I in South Delaware.. I'm like no -- I just got off the bridge a few minutes ago. If anything, I'm in North EAST Delaware! To me South Delaware is Dover, Smyrna, or Rehobeth Beach. But no, he INSISTED I was in South Delaware. Ok, fine, just come get my car!!
Ok, as I did last year, I put together a preliminary SELEM schedule in Teamup here: SELEM 2023 Schedule
I used last year's as a template, and added in what's different this year.
Please let me know if there are any errors or changes or if you'd like a spot on the schedule.
If you want to look at last year's schedule, click here: SELEM 2022 Schedule
thanks.
Looks good!
Thanks for doing this Hank.
Thanks Hank! ... and thanks again and again. Is that 15 characters?
I've booked at Embassy. Coming in Friday the 4th since I'll be working the Echos show on Saturday. Any chance of an airport pickup? PHL at 8pm on Friday.
I feel like I'm going to be all by myself at the Holiday Inn.
Should we start a GoFundMe get LazerJock to the Embassy Suites? ;) :D
I am thinking about staying at the Holdiay Inn Express in Elkton. It is $100 less expensive for the week. Hard choice to make.
Apologies for not communicating this ahead of time. Between the shenanigans last year with management and overall quality of the HIE Elkton, we decided to go for something a bit higher-end this year since our costs are split 3-ways. Glad to see we're not the only ones at the Embassy Suites. Now we just need a DD each evening between 5-7PM to drive a van full of us over to the "Manager's Reception" (free booze) in the lobby.
Thank you, Hank! Do we want to post hours for Club SELEM or leave it flexible like last year? I'm bringing my full Traktor DJ setup again, including a Xone 96 mixer with four available analog inputs for other decks and two for FX pedals if anyone cares to bring any. I am planning to play a 4 hour techno and trance set on Wednesday evening, probably 20:00-00:00 (maybe 21-01).
I'm still on the fence about playing a live synthesizer + graphics show this year. I don't want to play the same setlist I played the last 2 years, but I haven't put enough time and effort into a new set to be ready by SELEM. This could change in the next few weeks, but I don't expect to have a set completed along with the other work on my plate right now. I will still bring a big pile of synths and might just do some live improv ambient/electronica (leaning into minimal techno) on Thursday in the auditorium with everyone else jamming on graphics like we did in 2021 with JMJ's "Oxygene" album.
So......I gave it another shot and tried to cancel my reservation at the Holiday Inn.
I spoke to reservations and they told me "if the deposit was not charged yet that I would be able to cancel without any penalties". It looked like this might actually work out.
They were going to have the hotel call me directly to verify. I spoke to Jennifer and she said no, the manager told her, it is up to the hotel to make the decision if I get charged or not and that I would be if I canceled.
The deposit is $198.00
I refuse to give them nearly $200 to cancel a reservation still weeks out.
This will be the last time I stay at that hotel !!!
I'm looking forward to hear how the Embassy Suites stay is. I will wave as the cool kids DD van goes by on their way to get free alcohol.:(
Sorry I sort of dropped the ball on accommodations this year. I never got to the other Holiday Inn to discuss things with the manager there and see about a group discount. It's a little different than Newton for two reasons: Besides the Trotthouse which had limited space, most everyone stayed at the Holiday Inn since it was about the only game in town and, we could pretty much guarantee them 40 more more room nights over the span of SELEM to get a nice rate.
Here, between people using the Fairview Inn B&B, staying in campers, finding other hotels, the advent of AirB&B, and post Covid SELEM attendance dropping by more than half, it's really hard to tell a hotel you can guarantee a certain number of rooms.
What I will tell you is, we've had a relationship with Embassy Suites for 15 years now and, the vast majority of our weddings have used them. I've not heard of any major horror stories and, it's certainly convenient to the venue. It's a straight shot down 896 about 3 miles from there to here on a 50mph road. There's major construction going on at the I-95 interchange which you will drive past each day but, thus far it hasn't ever been congested that I know of. (That will happen week of August 6th I'm sure. Lol) Embassy was also going to be the hotel for ILDA when we were going to host the conference here in 2020.
Naturally we here have been chomping at the bit waiting for the hotel next door to the venue to be built. They've done an awful lot to that lot over the last year - mainly the underground infrastructure, sidewalks, roads, curbing, landscaping and the frame of the Wawa (convenience store) has gone up this week. I don't know how long it takes to throw up a hotel but "maybe" next year everyone will be able to stay within staggering distance. Hell... maybe we can do an outdoor show and terminate in your rooms window.
Embassy *used* to own a shuttle and some bridal parties would use them to get back and forth. I don't know if they still do. It was always a bit of hit or miss depending on management changes over the years and, if the bride thought to reserve it early enough. Might be something to look into. It's also only a few minute drive back and forth so I'm sure the occasional pick up/drop off won't be a big deal. There's a TGI Fridays in the parking lot of Embassy as well that's open until 1am for late night munchies or nightcaps. I'm sure we've provided them with a huge number of drunken revelers following weddings over the years. They probably hate us. :o
Just booked a room at the Embassy. Checking in on the 4th, out on the 11th. If anyone wants to share the room send me a PM. Edit- room taken.
Also, all the JHE stuff is still available and I can bring to SELEM anything you might be interested in. I made this video a couple months ago but didn’t have a chance to post it. https://youtu.be/ulBhGAM2G2o
Not in the video is the single mode RGB rig with compact506 scanners and an X-laser amp.
Sadly I haven’t been able to find time for SELEMs in years due to kids…lol
miss you guys!
very nice of you HANK..I was told that ES has a 'pick your own room' deal--MYB we can get rooms on the same floor--there WILL be lots of late nite snacks ETC at.."Greg and Hak's Shack.,,, BUT putting this idea off will lessen our chances-- I like the top (9th) floor at my MANY stays at ES Houston.
:ogreat free morning feed too.
I booked the Embassy Suites for Sunday arrival and Thursday departure. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone!
-David
I feel so alone.....
THERE ARE THREE CHRISes!!
You guys got a logo?
If not maybe something like this?
Alrighty. You guys have a good SELEM 16!
800 info on ES sucks-- worthless help-- (We had one many Sat. nights or as many as 5 suites there) each has (or had) a nice kitchen--afaik they are pretty much all the same.. I have Pecans, Peanuts, Almonds, Hazelnuts ,and BIG bunch of both Black and English Walnuts.-- AND marsh mallows-chocolate chips and coconut...etc see me to get some cookies or walnuts to take home-- I have MYB 5 or more pounds of Walnuts. (food bankage)
Don't sweat it, Len. The venue has a full size commercial kitchen with all the extras. Multiple "smart" ovens, multiple gas stoves, a blast-chiller, two warming ovens, an enormous deep-fryer... the works! So any baking you might want to do can easily be done at the venue in this massive kitchen. (Remember, the facility is a banquet hall that is normally used for things like weddings, school proms, family reunion parties, etc, so the kitchen is sized to be able to provide food for hundreds of guests at once.)
To give you some example of how easy it is to cook stuff: last year during load-out we were super busy because we were also trying to get set up for the concert that same evening (we did lasers to accompany a Pink Floyd tribute band), and we realized that we wouldn't have enough time to go out and grab lunch. Instead, Brad simply asked if anyone would be interested in some chicken wings... After everyone said "hell yeah!", he ran into the kitchen, and in no time at all he brought out something like 6 dozen wings. And he had another batch in the deep fryer that came out like 5 minutes later. Needless to say, we were impressed.
Regarding ingredients - don't try to bring them with you. Instead, just get with Brad and let him know what ingredients you will need. He can order pretty much anything through the restaurant supply company they use, and they get deep discounts compared to what everyone else would pay at a grocery store.
Chances are good he's already got most of the ingredients you'll need on hand in the pantry or one of the walk-in coolers. But let him know what you'll need so he can make sure we'll have it on hand for SELEM.

looks like the free covid test kit are no longer free== I will have enough (25 tests) for anyone with symptoms and no recent testing..
"Slightly exaggerated" but, Adam doesn't spend a lot of time in the kitchen so, he's doing it from memory. Yes there are multiple smart ovens and a blast chiller. Only one stove. I started to post "and no warmer" but then remembered we do have the big Alto Shaam. The deep fryer is only two basket. But... the point is the same. It ain't Newton! And... you don't even need to set a temperature on the oven for cookies... just push the "cookie" button. It will tell you when they're done. :o It's funny... our smallest hall, the Lazeretto Ballroom up near the Philly airport has the bigger fryer, larger gas stove and the multiple warming ovens. But only one smart oven. What MY kitchen has the most of, is actually refrigeration. 6 large reach ins, 2 walk ins and a walk in freezer.
I have flour in bulk and sugar in bulk. I don't have things like vanilla extract or baking power/soda or other "baking" things since, we're not actually bakers. Closest we come is cookies and they come frozen, already portioned in 1.25 oz. gobs you just drop on a pan and go. We actually do very little "cooking" either. The joke is, we select and heat up frozen food better than anybody. Lol It's high volume food service.
HAHA! Yeah, I was going from memory. I couldn't remember if the gas stove was one unit or two, but I remember it had like 8 large burners, making me think that it was 2 stoves side-by-side with 4 burners each. But one massive 8-burner unit would also fit the description! :)
As for the deep fryer, it may only have 2 baskets, but it's still bigger than any deep fryer I've seen apart from the ones at McDonalds... (It's definitely bigger than the one we had at the restaurant / diner I worked at when I was in High School!) You were able to crank out a mountain of chicken wings last year, in what seemed like no time at all (once the oil was hot anyway).
And yeah, the warmer I was thinking of was the big unit off to the right that could hold hundreds of pre-plated entrees and warm them all up at once. I figure you can keep all sorts of things warm in that beast...
But the computer-controlled ovens are really something else. I remember you explaining all the different features (including a water supply so they can "steam" things!) and being amazed by the tech. (Although I didn't remember that they had a "cookie" button...)
Bottom Line: The kitchen is *worlds* apart from anything we've ever had access to in the past, and that is very, very cool.

Some of those pre-programmed things are a little off. I remember once buying a frozen pizza from the grocery store and hitting the "pizza" button. It came out a briquette. *retardo I figured out later (and it's amazing to watch) that the correct time to cook and be ready to eat a frozen, store bought pizza is about a minute and forty five seconds.... Who knew??
