If Newton experiences a brown-out when we light off the lasers, do you think they'll let us come back? :D
Oh and this year can we have some scaff at stage left and stage right to make the videos more even.....
Steve
No scaffolding -
But I've got a 10-ft cheapo "DJ Truss" rig I'll probably bring.
Good for several light-weight LED fixtures (;)), or maybe one or two laser projectors - unless they're over-built like mine, and you need a crane to lift it...:p
We can look into scaffolding, but it will eat into our time. We've got to get it all torn down and returned by Sunday before Home Depot closes at 6 PM. Also, who's going to pick it up? I won't have room in the Jeep - it will be packed to the gills as it is.
As for power, the 450 amps of 3 phase is in ADDITION to all the 120 V outlets. Plus I'll have a 50 amp 220 single phase circuit on stage as well. Bottom line - power is not an issue at this venue unless you need 480.
BTW, the 208 is wye connected, so no stinger leg to worry about.;)
There's plenty of water for cooling too. Enough to run at least a pair of Lexel 95's if we wanted to.
Adam
I just made my reservations for SELEM at Holiday Inn Express. I'm the only one who has made reservations according to the girl I spoke to. It's under PL instead of SELEM. You can always cancel the reservation. Adam took the time to get this deal for us and I for one can't afford to let it slip away. With the money you save on the room it will pay for a meal or something. I know some are staying at the B&Bs that are close by. So Adam I again thank you for saving me money. I do hope you're feeling better. Blessings, Cat :)
If we get a majority interest I can do barbecue pulled pork sandwiches for lunch on Saturday or Sunday. I'd do ribs but they are too pricey and a danger to optics. :D
I'll do the sandwiches all on me. I just need an oven to reheat the meat for an hour. Is their an oven at the auditorium, Adam? If some folks can supply sides like baked beans and coleslaw along with some paper plates, disposable utensils and drinks, we have a lunch party!
Here are some pics to get your mouth watering. I just smoked with these shoulders last night for 12 hours with oak and hickory and pulled them this morning. I got a great new rub and mop recipe I just perfected. >:)
I think 6 shoulders would feed everyone at SELEM nicely.

Let me know....
Also, I'm thinking of driving cross country with Platinum if everything goes as planned. We'll see. :)
if there is NO oven, we can reheat it on a gas burner in a giant pot outside. .. if need be i can bring that...
There is a stove at the venue, but we disconnect the wires to that circuit in order to feed a small distribution panel that I bring. That way we have 4 extra 20 amp 110v outlets + a single 50 amp 220v outlet all on the stage. (Of course, you can't run all the 110 outlets plus the 220 one at the same time, but it does give us extra flexibility when it comes to power availability on-stage...)
The B&B will certainly have a stove, but I don't know if they'd let us use it or not. Plus you'd have to transport the food back to the venue afterwards.
The venue does have a microwave oven that we can use, and the idea of a gas burner in the parking lot would also work...
Another thought is to use a crock pot. I like to put a Boston Butt in a crock pot for about 12 hours with a couple cans of soup (cream of onion and cream of mushroom)... When it's done, you pull the pork, add BBQ sauce + some of the drippings from the crock pot and you end up with some awesome BBQ without having to fire up the grill (or the smoker).
Either way, this sounds like a great idea... Sure beats Pizza Hut, KFC, or Burger King for lunch!
Adam
Sacrilege!
That's not barbecue!!! :D:D:D
Yeah, we can do with a reheat in a crock pot or gas stove with pot as keeperx suggested although 20lbs of meat is quite large and may need more. Gonna need something big if you guys want me to do it. Either way is fine, just a suggestion.
That looks mighty tasty! Do you accept mail orders? :D ;)

This is great! Unfortunately it happens to be the same weekend (the only weekend) that the better half and I were going to have a mini-vacation!! talk about bad luck. I really wanted to go to this one since I have stuff to demonstrate, and relationships to build!
No mini-vacation to SELEM? Since I got the suite at the Trotthouse the boss has decided to come along with me. We are taking a mini-vacation... *retardo :D  :o
I would have liked to meet you Andrew. [popcorn] Some other time. ;)
Adam, you have a fantastic memory. Remind me to bring a few Bhut Jolokia sweet fruits with me for you. :D:D:DQuote:
Oh boy.... I'm scared. Their better not be any Bhut Jolokia >:)>:) in the list of ingredients!
John :):):)
Andrew;
Just make it a slightly longer vacation and you can do both! If she's not into the lasers, she'll have plenty to do in downtown Charlotte while SELEM is going on. (Charlotte is less than an hour by car from the venue, and there will probably be at least 2 or 3 other wives present that would be interested in a shopping trip to one of the several mega-malls they have downtown.)
After SELEM, you could stay in Charlotte and have some more fun together. There are *tons* of cool things to do in Charlotte. They've got a man-made white water rapids training park, a few rock-climbing parks, indoor and outdoor go-cart racing parks (several of each), a Zip-line park , plus multiple museums, gardens, and aboretums. You could spend a week there and not get bored.
Another good idea would be to take a day and go tour the Biltmore Estate, which is about an hour west of Newton. (Near Asheville... It's on your way home in fact.) Then you can head into Maggie Valley or Cherokee if you want some more fun...
Or, if you're into theme parks, you really owe it to yourself to take a day and go to Carowinds. (They've got a new inverted shuttle loop coaster this year, bringing the park total up to 7 coasters.) Oh, and they also have a big water park inside the theme park. 1 ticket gets you into both, and it's a much nicer park than any 6 Flags park I've ever been to. (Carowinds is owned by the same company that owns Cedar Point.) This park is exactly 50 minutes by car from the venue. (It's near Charlotte.)
So yeah, you can make this into one heck of a vacation and *still* attend SELEM... Check out some of the links and see what you think...
Adam
Watch it Buffo.. nobody will actually show up at the theater if you keep talking like that..
Hehe.. Good point Alec!:p
Seriuosly though, there is a lot to do around Charlotte. Newton is a fairly sleepy town, but there are fun things to do all around the area. (I didn't even mention the larger zip line parks in Boone, NC - near the ski resorts!)
Heck, at this rate *I* might have to stay in town an extra day or two just to have some more (non-laser-related) fun! *retardo
Adam
Not sure if there's any decent fishing right around Newton or not. I don't remember any rivers or lakes in town. However, I'm sure there's great fishing in the mountains to the north. You'd need a fishing licence from the state of North Carolina, of course, but otherwise you should be OK. (Any bait and tackle shop should be able to hook you up, and there are several of those right around Newton.)
Adam
We had planned on renting a weekend house with some friends and already had a location set up with them. Will try to change the date.
Nothing like a bit of peer pressure. >:)
Screw that! You can test yourself all you want, but leave me out of it! I know better than to eat one of those things. I'm not into self-mutilation! :p
Oh, and it's milk you want to quench the flames, not water. (Or better yet, Ice Cream!)
Nothing you eat will stop the burning sensation the next day when those peppers exit your body though. (Remember: what burns on the way down will also burn on the way out!)
Adam
You have to understand Andrew... DocJohn grows his own *insanely hot* peppers. So we're not just talking hot, we're talking thermonuclear hot!
Personally, I'm a wimp when it comes to hot food, though I will admit that under the influence of alcohol I have consumed a few hot foods in a lame attempt to defend my manliness. Nevertheless, in each case the burning experienced the morning after was every bit as bad as the night before. Yuck - no thanks! I'll stick to the Taco Bell mild sauce from now on.
But for you "real men" out there that enjoy eating napalm, I'm sure that DocJohn will bring a few peppers for you to abuse your digestive system with! :p
Adam
Haha, the thing is I LIKE hot and spicy foods, and in the heat of the moment it's too easy to forget the painful repurcussions that may come in the end.
That's about right! :D I certainly wouldn't swallow one of those things. Chew and spit. :p If anyone other than Adam is willing to take a bite... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NNzI3RTZ7I :D
"Oh Wow ! I'm finding it hard to breathe"......
Worth watching up to the last second. :D
What is wrong with you people?
We have LEM's to share the love of Lasers.
Now you are introducing loud music, Barbecues, Shooting and now self abuse in the form of extreme vegetables.
Get a grip !!
:p
News: The vacation was moved to the weekend before. I can make it! Looking forward to meeting everyone and demoing some of my projects, if there is interest. :)
Awesome.. i was kinda pissed when you said you could not make it..
That's not just news, Andrew! That's great news! *retardo Looking forward to meeting you at SELEM. (I'm sure plenty of Flex-mod owners will enjoy meeting you as well!)
Oh Mo... You poor, misguided fool! I pity you. You do realize, of course, that anything that burns on the way down will *also* burn on the way out, right? 1.2 *million* scoville units... Think about that for a moment... Do you really want to be wiping your ass with a popsicle for several hours?
Milk and bread? How about a fire extinguisher?:p
Ok Doc... You're the physician - I'm just an EMT. But when these people start freaking out because their insides have just been exposed to the equivalent of PEPPER SPRAY, I'm going to leave them in *YOUR* care...
Adam
LOL! Who said I'm swallowing?
Not a way in hell!! I'm gonna be burning my mouth for sure, but not my ass...
Actually, I don't even think my stomach would take it if I swallow it  I'd probably throw up a few seconds later...
Nevertheless... milk, bread, ice, and all that (how about some frozen milk... that should be the best ) have got to be available. I do greatly appreciate the advice and words or encouragement >:)
Thanx;
DDL
EDIT: I told my GF about this and her only stern response was "it's not going to happen. You're not going to try this..." We'll see what I'm allowed to do at that point in time though, but thanx for including me in your guinea pig sample.
I'm not even going to take a bite. Even if you spit it out, your lips are still on fire for several hours. I'm just not into the whole self-mutilation thing!
Sounds like your GF has a good head on her shoulders, Mo... ;)
Adam
Bring a few extra for me...may want to make a purchase or two....I know I will want a few Flexmods...please save me 3 or 4 of them. If you have time to get a couple of TEC controllers...I'll be taking them too....if they have been finished that is. Thanks in advance BTW glad to be able to meet you there!
