So do i believe the hype or are the quad builds a joke?? can we see some pics of some working units???? anyone......:)
There are plenty of people who have made them. Maybe use the search function?
Im working on it. I,m waiting for parts. Acctually the basetplate :-) The rest is at dutch customs :(
a mutial friend of ours is developing it at this moment. MCcarrot ordered the collimators so i ,m doing my best.;)
This thread has pics: http://www.photonlexicon.com/forums/...=quad+combiner

it was just an attempt at getting peoples attention.... me thinks it worked....
ok... I must admit.. I still wasnt clear .... who has pics of laserman532's quad kit in action???:D
it took me way too manys tries to get that out.......hehehee I need more coffee
heres a quad simon made for robin, as you can see an awesome build, very small as well. from memory tec cooled as well

here's a quad red i built a long time ago
http://www.photonlexicon.com/forums/...made-800mw-red
a bit on the big side but it was my first attempt and since made them a lot smaller :D
so they do exist:D
simon does not broadcast his work round, but its second to none.
Here's the first one...in a projector at work.
So nobody has a completed laserman532 quad kit lasing???
In Simon's setup, are there springs in the mirror mounts ?
Or is it just 3 screws and an allen key bolt for the pressure ?
Those mounts look nice and would love more info.
@ hobbybob
there no springs, there are three allen bolts for pulling and two grub screws inbetween for pushing
i will try to take you a pic when i get home from work :D
they are very good mounts and stable when used correctly
In fairness, Pat only released the quad kit a few months ago. Thus, he's sold a few of them so far. Apparently those early adopters are working on other projects at the moment. Give it some time...
As far as them being "a joke", nothing could be further from the truth. Several people have built quads, even before Pat released his version. I have a quad red sitting on my workbench right now, waiting to be installed in a new projector. (Thanks to MechEng3!) As to when that projector will be finished, however, I have no idea. I've got lots of other projects in the works that are competing for my time.

You can see some pictures of my working setup here too... Working very nice, very tight beam and low divergence! 1.2W 660nm on double TEC (yeah I know, that's pushing the diodes a little).
The TEC driver wasn't finished and was a prototype, I am building now an external TEC + diode driver...
Thanks, very clear pictures, where do you buy the screws with the allen key holes in it (the ones without a head) ?
the screws without caps/heads are called grubs and are on ebay
Those ones are cone point grub screws because they are the pivot point of adjustment in these mounts :)
Im working on it. Mccarrot ordered the collimators from Marco (showlaser.dk) Yes the magic lenses. It,s not a case of if it will work but when:D Don,t mind the position of the stuff it,s just to show how it looks;)
Also he ordered the pbs cube from swisslas so in theory the quad setup should have beamspecs from less then 1mrad and 2by 2 mm :-)
ok, now Ive done it.... Im building two quad reds......:D one for me and one for my busniess partner, i just got the dual module holders, cans & fsm mirrors..... i think by mid next week they should be complete!!!!
YAY ME!!!*retardo
Very interested in seeing the result and the beamspecs.:)
wow....... what a piece of work...... now have a working quad red*warn....... all i need do now is aline this bad boy.....and place a call to drlava to see if we can meter her......*retardo
pics up soon......
I,m waiting for the driver that Mccarrot is selling. Also shrad is working on designing a board with 4 highside drivers and a tec on one board. Andy_con is the original designer off the driver circuit. I think its great to see members with different skills to teamup so that everyone has a bennifit of this. Let say one member designs a driver and another the mechanics that way they can trade and help eachother out.
It would be great to have a group of members each with their own product to sell of to trade. I have a case to trade for stuff that i need. :)
oops sorry it was andy the mechanic:) Should stop drinking this martini but it taste delicious:p
ok this eight looking beam is really pissing me off...... can any help with getting the beams to align? I wish I had a dichro that passed red & bounced red..... as it is im cutting off beams due to the mirrors being in the way..... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrO_o
how tight is your beam of your quad red????? anyone......:p
I starting to think its a waste of money.....:(
as its just about impossible in get two duals to line up right on top of one another... without cutting off some of your beams...... you get a figure eight looking beam.... grrrrrrrr
We need dichros that pass 650nm & reflect 635nm or 660nm or in some order like that.... this was you could combind 2 650's & 2 660's or 635's and have a true dot of laser light and not an eight....
what are you tryin to do, align a quad?
if so it depends on the lens your using? if your using like standard aixiz lens then the final beam will be massive and you could probably do with some optics to make the beams smaller.
you might want to post some pictures of your set-up so we can see what you are talking about. Somewhere are some threads probably my quad FS threads were people provide a lot of input on how to combine threads. Im mowing the lawn right now or i would look for you.
Keep in mind you are taking four beams and combinign them side by side and on top and below...not into one beam. You will end up with 4 beams wiht space between unless you use my quad elite setup (or someone elses)which will give you better performance.
if your talking about the two horizontal beams not lining up ,did you set the the laser beams at the correct height ? i take it you want to get the beams like this #
as far as i am aware, and i have built a few now, when you build a quad red you have to set the two horizontal beams at different heights. one 2mm lower of the center the vertical ones and the other 2mm above center, you will have to use shim's to do this,
what i normally do is to put a 2mm shim under the two vertical ones, then i dont have to shim one of the horizontal one's then use one four mm shim under the other horizontal one,
also note that horizontal beams cant be mounted in the same ali block as they need to be mounted at different heights you could mount them in the same block if you had the holes machined at different heights,
the other thing i do is dont fix the lens untill the last minute, get every thing almost perfect line up
then put a dab of epoxy on the edge of the len thread then as the glue drys do an final line up by giving each lens a poke with a cocktail stick just to get every thing spot on,but only do two lasers at a time
the other thing to note is lining up always a lot better if every laser bounces off a mirror, and not fire one vertical and one horizontal straight through a pbs cube or it just to much hard work to get a good line up. hope some of this helps and works for me every time, i found that in the past that you need to build a couple of quads before you will get a good one, they take a lot of paitence to get right
thats my ten pence worth :)
is there a dichro that passes 635nm and reflects 650-660nm?? yeah i was trying to combided the 4 beams at like 30' and well... the beam looks like crap....... i then got the eight lookin beam going by blocking the right side diodes and working only with the bottom two..
Yes. There was a group buy for them back in 2008. Details here. Semrock stocks them on the shelf, but in single quantities they cost around $200 each.
Do a search for "SEMROCK" and you'll find several threads discussing how to mix 635 with 660.
Adam
i still dont unserstand the problem, why dont you post some pics of your setup?
ok, this is mine, (for myself, for private use)
nice looking unit you've got there.. what kind of beam specs r u getting???
Beam is 4mmx4mm, two 658nm @200mw and two 640nm @150mW all at 15° (european units..sorry)
the cube is a 5x5x5 mm.
And I forgot, that's a good friend who design it, thank's for him ;)
I'd always thought that the idea of these multi diode knife edge setups was that you added as many diodes as you fancied, and then telescoped to get the right beam diameter. Was I wrong? It's not hard to imagine that even with 4 diodes the beam is gonna be a fatty.
At that point what gains over buying a big 635 or 650 anyway? The money being thrown at some of these quads has to be significant, and I thought the whole point of 640 was for the nice beam specs?
I'm not sure to understand all you 've said...
But, no, I'm not using a telescope, the beam diameter is correct (fit in my scans mirrors) and at 10meters, the beam is like my cni green beam.
Each diode as a 1.2x2mm beam output. I've not measured divergence, but the seller of the colimators said it is 1.2mrad.
Sure, if you want to save your money, you can buy a 635 module....but you cannot have a beam quality like a quad setup (with good optics !).
Your absolutely right northy. I think there is no point of building a quad when you don,t get reasonable beamspecs. The only chance of getting good beamspecs is to use good collimators and a waveplate to stack the beams. If you do it right and spend about 400 euro,s and use 650nm diodes you still could have a quad with good beamspecs. As long as members try to save money you don,t get the quality like a Kvant. But its nice to see all those quads because it proves it can be done.:D
well that's quite straightforward when you think about it
all is a matter of emitter size and diffraction
high power diodes have a BIG emitter size (unless focused in a small core diameter fiber, but other limitations apply) so they are really messy to deal with when using other optics than mirrors
smaller emitter size (as for our small 200mW diodes) are far more diffraction limited so you can use a telescope and, with even fatter beams, obtain collimated light over a greater distance
