Well After some new info I decided to push my diode a little hotter.
And It looks like it had more to give.

Congratulations! [popcorn]
A little update so far about 45 min in and rock solid at a watt running about 75f with small tec.

Good Lord! Very Impressive!
Thats incredible!
1 watt of blue from a diode.
I only need 150mw in my projecter, it will just about be breaking a sweat:D
Thanks.
Is the diode you're testing from the 2000 lumen or 2500 lumen projector?
I don't know. It is one of the eBay ones.
I am guessing that there is no difference. I wouldn't think that they would have a different module or or diode to order and stock for only 500 llumen difference.
I suspect that it is just a firmware difference and they have calculated the odds of the rate of failure with the 2500 model and figure that it it is cost effective to repair any 2500 duds with the hotter settings.
Chad
can't believe that one! I'll have 2 watts of blue *retardo
Sod it, I'm just enjoying the fact I can probably get 700mW without having to recourse to anything more exotic that some heatsinking and maybe a fan.... :D
Very, very cool indeed.... It's just starting to hit home quite what a game changer this is!
WoW..
Lasershow Business is changed, :) historical moment. :P
it would seem the whole world of lasers has changed over night
Damn im so happy right now that i waited with my plans for building a projector :D
So 445nm blue is bright enough to make blue only projector?
I Believe it is, although it would be interesting to see if this diode has the propper beamspec to work with some galvos. It will probably not be a problem with the correct optics but how much would they be?
I know 405nm Blurays and the Aixiz module and lens are NOT working very well in a projector, 1-3meters away it looks ok but after 5meter its useless. and you could use a violet flashlight instead. Althouhg as i said this was with Aixiz lens, so someone has probably done better with some propper optics.
ANd the big question. Will these new 445 diodes work to combine? or perhaps even a Quad-setup?
Chad, thank you for taking the time and risking your diode! (Congratz on breaking the W barrier with a 5,6mm diode >:))
I have only one question, which lens are you using for your experiments?
It's a real pity no-one has a complete working projector to test what they actually run at as standard as you can almost certainly bet Casio have spent a lot of time testing to determine optimum life settings. Would be interesting to see the drive current and output for this.
Just wondered as well what the beam spec were like? Are these the same diodes as in the other thread where the beam width was less than desirable?
White-light: In one of the other 445nm threads, dream beamz tested the output of a single diode with the projector intact. Results were a very encouraging 600-700mw output per diode after lens. :)
Chad has also run one up to 1.02W output @ 1A running at a steady 75 degrees.
I share your fears.. here in Holland you see these showtec green lasertoys in every club and bar.. which I always thought was a bad thing.. putting me out of work as a laser operator. i guess they will all turn blue in the next months :)
But don't forget a professional laserprojecter is more than a few diodes. There's also the drivers, galvo's, qm-board (or equivalent) safety, optics.. it's still a lot of work to build a high-quality multiwatt projector for cheap, even with cheap diodes.
And also i believe producing a professional live lasershow is something that won't change with the rise of cheap diodes. I do think you have to work harder to make a show which seperates itself from 'the rest'.. so stop using those standard patterns :) The people who buy these ebay/showtec cheap projectors settle for a crap show.. these people didn't have the budget anyway to hire a professional show.
anyway.. i believe there's still money to be made in the laser business ;)
You're totally right. I'm just a little afraid to see powerful RGB laser projectors become a standard in every small party (by the way, removing a part of its charm), thus making for laserists even more difficult to seperates from the "rest". Like if all people were owning a Ferrari, they will not have the same charm...
Anyway, now those "cheap" projectors will have a very bad color balance, but on the blue side instead of green, as 445nm is shifting colors really hard :D
A lasershow should distinguish itself by good artwork and craftsmanship.
Projectors and controllers are just tools. I can make a lousy show with a top-end projector running CT6800HP and a SP168, but I can also do the best I can to create a great show on a $200 Laserworld.
People who have a good deal of creativity can astonish the audience, regardless of the equipment they're using. People who don't have a *great* deal of creativity, but want to wow the crowd anyway (with all good intentions) will try to hunt for the best equipment they can get for their resources.
Of course, there are also enough guys out there who spend thousands of dollars on top-of-the-range gear, only to show it off and blame the equipment if it doesn't do what they want.
The classic DJ who wants a complete Pioneer CDJ-2000/DJM-700 kit, only to play simple top 40 tunes on it, comes to mind. :)
heres something to consider when measuring power straight off the unit - ie not driving it directly, the blue lasers are gated on and off at 250hz @ 50% duty cycle
see attached
So measurments with the likes of Coherent LC are not to be truusted (not that LC is too good at shorter wavelengths anyway)
Also a close up of one of them cuties....plus obligitory laser canon shot sans fog.
Rob
Other way around Andy isn't it?
1.4Watts??
Actually I think its the other way around, the Coherent LC can't respond fast enough to the 'off' cycles and so measures an average lower reading than what the peaks really are.
The same way that a thermopile isn't any good for measuring a scanned pattern.
What Rob might be implying is that they are run hotter than 1w but only for 50% duty!
Does that make these unit pulsed then?
Jim is more right but the reading wont be double unless the meter is designed to measure transient output but especially with an LC as its readings are barmy at the best of times and its for CW measurments only. I am gonna look to see if I can finf the 250hz clock and defeat it breifly to get a cw reading.....watch this space.
My old (uncalibrated) sensor physics meter is reading >850mW but LC reads 520mw on the same diode
I will report back when I get CW
Rob
my bad, yep yep.
Respect to all of you testing these new baby's! [popcorn]
When I measure my 1W 445nm with my Lasercheck, the power meter reacts strangely... First I can't see the full 1W on the display (it starts at 800mW), and then it progressively decreases the displayed power down to 5-600mW after a few measurements. So I think the Lasercheck display a too low value comparing to the real power, maybe due to a too big energy directed to the sensor?
I would agree SBK its the photodiode that does not respond well to the shorter wavelengths - its crazy when you try it with 405 too...
Rob
quick update
the projector has 3 power modes eco 1 & 2 + off
switching from eco 1 to 2 the power increases on the blue laser arrray but the Duty cycle remains the same (50%) - plus the fan speeds up
turning eco off the fans go ape an dthe brghtness remains but the duty cycle goes to 66% on.
The casing gets fookin hot!!!
Rob
not just yet - popped the hood to look for power source....
Rob
we dont want no 3inch measurements rob, we want mm readings :)
Oh my god. I stay away from PL for a couple of days and return to se my 473 devalved by 90%!
This is indeed a turning point! I was around when red DVD-R's came and when BluRay hit and now this...all in less than 4 years!
I feel so old! :)
