Socalem 2011

California is a huge bitch and that is why I am calling it SOCALEM . I am going to take the laser by the projector and make this happen. I think if we set it up for January 2011 it should give enough time for a venue and sort out all the logistics.
I can say that I have some non board members that will participate as well as some board members I have met in the last few weeks. We know that interest has been thrown about but it's hard to mountains unless someone takes charge.

The deal is to find a space large enough to handle a small group of ? with high ceilings and plenty of water and power. If we can get enough interest and have people pitch in we can have food catered. Or we can all just go out and find a place to grub. The concept I have is to mix the old with the new. My goal is to have a Laserium 600 projector open up the event and proceed from there. We can probably setup two or three areas. One for doing any tech stuff. Another for laser entertainment and another area for just plain getting away and taking a rest.

So now that I have put it out there let's get a head count. if we can also get a count on what type of gear people can bring.

We can make this happen.

I agree it's about time that we get this going. I can bring myself and a half-baked projector that's putting out 1.5W of 532nm and a FB3. Hopefully I can talk my non-board member friend into coming and bringing some gear with him.

i should be able to bring LD2000 at the least, if i can plan the trip right... sounds like fun though!

Great we also have Yadda Trance and Josh on-board. Old school guys that don't post much. I threw out an invite to Bob from Holo Spectra. He sounded 50/50 on it. I think it would be great to drag some of the old guys to this. Maybe even Ivan Dryer from Laser Images. In any case Carlos3621 is also on-board and has some really nice high powered projectors.
Let's get some more people to chime in and try to nail a day to do this. If the interest picks up steam than maybe we can bump it up. I sent invite to at least 11 other people that expressed interest in the past.

Ivan

I should have a 1.3 watt R (650) G (532) B (445) projector finished by then, I also have FB3 as well.

@instinct

Since you're so close, we should hang out before the SOCALEM.

Yo, Iv -

If we can get 6911's 'hair-combed and teeth-brushed', ;) in-time, I can offer the space for free - plenty of 3Ø and agua.. and mirrors.... :) ...and certainly, loud music and fog aint' no prob..

I'll be-back in LA on the 13th... let's chat.. fer real....

Hey I am always game to get my hands dirty. Let's get the place detailed out.

this sounds like it will shape up well and i would kill to meet some of my west coast co-enthusiasts, as in relation to the rest, were not that far apart!

depending on my mode of transport i may be able to kidnap a df50 (diffusion hazer) for the ride as well.

Nice! When I get a free minute. Let's start by getting a head count on who is attending. We should also get an equipment list of things everyone can bring.
I should have my 3.5 Watt Gas laser with a PCAOM . By then I should also have two 1.2 Watt RGB's and a few other Red and Green scan systems.

Ivan

I almost forgot, I have an old Antari Z1500 Fog machine and a Hog II PC DMX controller.

Those that know me, know that my focus has been primarily on hand-held lasers.

However, I am starting to work on scanners and went to the LEM in Oregon.

I just got an old MarioMaster scanner rebuilt with a 445nm diode. It is still at low power at this point. I have to swap out a resistor to kick up the 445nm. I had to turn everything else down to get it balanced :(

I will be there. I cannot promise great equipment to show off, but I can still watch :)

JAFO  (- Blue Thunder)

Peace,
dave

Count me in!.
I dont know if I will have a projector finished by that time, but I would like to attend!
I am a good roadie & can help move stuff around, Logistics Im not the best at, however Im good at eating food, and do allright with electrical. Lemme know how I can help!

SELEM was an absolute blast for me, So you count me in as well, I live in Phoenix, Az so it would be short drive for me.
I am Pangolin powerd LD2000 and network box, RGB graphics projector, a fog mechine.
100' cat 5 cable and lots of goodies to sell cheep to PL and any other laser forum board members that attend.

nice one beanmann! cant wait to make this one

I am currently in santa barbara, so I could probably make it to a socalem.

We should plan a Equipment list of attendies (what they are bringing to the event).

Projection screens for graphics projectors,
sound system,
projector mounting systems, Truss, scaffolling, or tripods,
Bounce mirror systems,
Foggers ,hazzers,
NETWORKING set ups,
Electrical and water access for the big boys,
Most of all scheduling of timed events and time slots for shows for each attending.
for sale tables,
As great SELEM was for me, I was disapointed to only, that some one made the call of only showing two out of five module shows that I spent months on and the one I wanted to show above all eles "she's got the look" I guess he did not like my choice of music.
I did not know about the show selection to be played untill it was all over with and on to the next presenters modules. I now understand that due to the amount of attendies that showed up (77) and the chaos invalved, it would have been nice if I was asked "we can't play all your shows so which Two do you want to play?"

I will try to get some stickers etc form Pangolin :)

Screw the stickers. How about we try to get Bill. *retardo

Not that I don't want some free Pangolin swag, but getting Mr Pangolin himself to show up would be really cool.

Count me in as well, Have a warehouse location avail in Fullerton with 3ph and water, also in Monterey park (have large 208v step down at this one, and its much bigger)

Equipment avail for socalem:

... I think (...at least, if I am gonna be involved / help / contribute Laserium shows, in all their full-fx-glory...) we'll be fine w/o the warehouse / frankenscopes.... :p
and besides, our Sabre needs a good 'stretch'; she hasn't been out in awhile... and 16W of WL will be plenty for all to play with...

...But, I certainly 'defer' to Cap'n ArcDev, et al on this - if ya'll wanna mount-up for gettin yer eyes shot-out in Fullerton well, I guess that's yer peroggie...

lets get this show on the road!

Anyone know approximately how much space we would need to do this? I have no idea as what to look for.

Here is a place I found:

http://www.monkspace.us/floorplan.html

looks good to me, we need somebody to organize this , its about time for a first ever SOCALEM!

Hi,

Please contact me once the details are settled. I'd like to attend or at least support this, as we have with other PL-related and LaserFreak-related events...

Best regards,

William Benner

This is still an ongoing discussion. We are hoping to have further details within the next week. Jon from Daystar has offered up some space. I need to work out the details with him.

That looks like a great space. Let me finish talking to Jon from Daystar about using the existing Laserium space.
It might make sense to get this place for the day. It looks like you can get it from 7AM till 4AM The price seems fair enough where we might be better off doing a two day event.

Ivan

Also, this place is probably not in the greatest area, if that is a concern for anyone. I keep it gangsta, so it's all good with me.

Well guys, I just pulled out my projector and I need more photons. 1.7W of green just doesn't seem bright enough to me. I mean its bright, but it's not "Oh my God" BRIGHT. I guess I'm just used to seeing the 10W RGBs at Disneyland. Could it be that I'm using fog instead of haze?

Projector is probably no good, Just mail it to me and I'll pay for shipping to get it off your hands. :D

If 1.7 watts isn't enough, maybe your laser really isn't putting out it's rated power.

1.7 watts with a little fog in the air should look really bright even in a fairly large club. (Say, 1000 patrons or so.) Fog actually makes the beam more visible than haze does, so long as it's not so think that it completely blocks the beam.

Are there a lot of ambient lights on in the venue? That will reduce the apparent brightness.

Worst case, if you need more power, you could add some 445 nm blue in there for just a little bit of money, and that would give you a lot of extra punch. (Figure at least another watt; more if you want to cool it with a TEC to pump the current up, or you could install a pair of diodes with a PBS and double your power...)

Couple things to consider (pros/cons) about our space:

Pros:
- Free. Though, I prolly should think about a *small* donation from each to go towards Power. Building, itself, is Free.

- Loudness and Fogginess are limitless. The place is across the street from the Van Nuys airport, so until we are louder than the LeerJets and Bells, no worries... :)

- Hours: 6am till 6am :D and the Management is totally awesome to work with... *retardo

- Fairly decent 'lobby' space, (loading bay) with a nice big overhead door, for easy I/O, no stairs, etc...

- We get to play some True Laserium shows, in their full-glory (not like at 'selem' where the Laserium show-portions we played were not even a fraction of what the
'real' shows are like...)

- There is a 16 Watt Whitelight Sabre there....What more do I need to say? :)

Cons:
- Most we can hold in 'Studio B' is about 40 Kats... Got scaffolding, got bounce mirrors, got mirror-balls, rotating diffraction gratings and a host of other killer fx to play with, but space is kinda 'smallish' - fine for tight graphics shows, but not so great for nice, stretched-out aerials and well, you know, beams kinda like to 'go long', too... ;)
...So, a 'consideration'...

- Only one bathroom, and we will have to NUKE the rear-office it is in, since the carpet in that rear-office area is... well... REALLY REALLY nasty... I'd explain more, but I want you to keep your breakfast down... ;) So, unless we can make the time to Demo that rear-office, or you Kats are willing to hold yer breath whilst using the facilities... *retardo
that's a fairly big con, IMO... There is, however, a decent fridge and micro...

SO, all in all - our space is a good candidate, but once I can 'come up for air', mid-Nov, Ivan and I can get together and assess / recommend, based on the work it will take to get the place in-shape (for an event)...

Will KIT...
j

I am neutral as far as venue. The cost to rent the space Instinct posted is not to bad. The space at Laser Images needs some severe elbow grease. It might not be a bad idea. Jon I will call you later this evening and we can talk about our options. January is coming up quick. We should try to nail a date in the next week with venue. I am also going to look for a few more options.

Looks for cash to make it to this, would love to see this!

I am down to have it in Van Nuys, this is where Laserium was held at prior to Hollywood, correct? I've been there before, does this include the area where they have that Light Dancer? Kind of sucks not having enough beam space.

Yes, it's the 'old Laser Images' space (...we took it over...) No, the area where the 'LD' was is empty, but not very 'accessible', till we knock out a wall / move some pipes, electrical, etc - aint gonna happen by Jan... :) - Once we do that, we'll have a *much* better space for shows / demos, etc...

Till then, perhaps we could do one / two days at the 'other' space, where aerials and beams can get a chance to 'stretch-out', and then, one day at VNYs, (?) so we can play some of the Laserium shows? (not too keen on dragging that all out gear to another venue... gotta rent a truck, all the hose / feeder, etc...)

Again, Ivan and I will discuss, but I wanted to at least put all the 'pros and cons out in the light', for all to discuss / ponder, etc...

Thanks for the input, will 'KIT'...

Jon hit me up when you get back. Wonder if we can make it an indoor outdoor event? Or would the management have an issue if we do a small outdoor setup? In any case renting a space might work better. We can always make it a goal to get that place back into working shape for future use.

Hmm, well, certainly no problem, 'from me'... :) nor the owners, etc, but I think the neighbors, next door, might complain if the tunes were really crankin'... then-again, they don't call the cops on the jets! :)

...actually, that would prolly be a 'negative' to doing outdoors there... nice big lot, yes, but when the jets take off, (which is pretty-unpredictable / no real 'schedule') it would really 'trump' any show-music that happened to be playing... sound from the airport is pretty-well 'dampened' inside, but outside - it comes across the street quite efficiently... O_o

Yeah, just a matter of time... but, I think we could make it work for *one* day... would be a real treat / inspiration to be able to play the Laserium shows... http://www.photonlexicon.com/forums/...cons/icon6.gif

Let's plan to meet-up when I get back, and 'assess the workload' and see if it is 'feasable' for even one-day... if not, perhaps for SoCaLem II, in Spring... http://www.photonlexicon.com/forums/...ons/icon10.gif

A friend of mine is trying to get info on another new concert/club venue in Anaheim Hills.

Here is his direct quote "Capacity is limited to 400 people, but there is a concessions split, in-house audio and basic LED lighting. It has three installed truss circles (2 - 10' + 1 - 15')"

He was quoted $750 for a weekend DAY, I am not sure what the time is limited too, but they said they have full blackout capabilities. It would really suck to end it early, but just another option on the table. I really want to find the size of the place.

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-...2_129184_n.jpg

He JUST sent me an email with more photos:

Is this thread dead already?

I am interested in coming. We have a 2.3w RGB show that we do in Fresno and around the valley. So it would be nice to connect with others. I have other lasers too. Got a couple of 95-2 lexels that run on 220 single phase and a 488nm @ 100mw Cyonics that in a single color small show.

Fuuuuck... I'd say offer them a grand for the weekend. That is a nice spot. It may not have the space Newton does, but it has a lot of features Newton don't. *retardo Actually it might have more space; just configured differently. The auditorium seating in Newton is nice.

Finally a westcoast lem! I'm definitally going
