Quad Laser Module Kit by Edison (USA Version)

Hey Guys!
Want a bad ass, compact quad kit for your red or blue laser project? Here is your chance!

Edison asked me to take over a group buy for him so we can all get some more of these beauties out there. The deal is, we need to have an order for at least 22 of these to make it work. The price for the "Kit" No diodes, lenses or drivers is 200 Euro's (currently $280USD) plus shipping charges. Which is not bad for such a nice module! To start, Let's take a tour...

This quad module is a very compact kit made out of brass for good metallurgical stability and it's thermally conductive properties. It's a "knife edge" kit that utilizes brass flexure mounts to move and lock the mirrors for little or no maintenance.

The way the module works is it has slide adjustable screws for the flexure mounts and the double diode assemblies. Essentially, two of the beams are knife edged and the other two are knife edged and stacked above the latter. You end up with a beam configuration like this... "::" However it will like like a single solid beam exiting the module.

The brass flexure mounts are very nice. They are extremely sturdy and well designed. The thickness of them and the push/pull arrangement makes a firm mount for your knife edge mirrors.

The flexure mounts sit in the modules groove for a nice lateral fit while maintaining adjustability up and down the channel.

The diode holders are also well designed. Each one holds two height adjustable laser diodes that snugly fit the base of the diode can against the module. The diodes can easily be changed since they are not press fit.

As you can see here, the diode modules maintain good thermal conductivity to the base of the module while allowing adjustability.

All module kits come with diode/LASORB interface PCB which holds the diodes in place via two Allen screws and allows a LASORB to fit overhead. They are very similar to my LaserBug modules but are made to fit this module practically.

Additional Parts...

Since this is a kit and not a complete unit, It will need additional parts to populate it.

The Kit comes with these lens holders, Note: these are not lenses, just brass rings for holding a lens. For a red build, these lenses are the best way to go and cost $17.50 each plus shipping. They will work great for 638, 642, 650 or 658nm laser builds. Optionally, I can mount 4 of these lenses for $110 plus shipping. I will also chemically process the brass so it is black and will produce less artifacts that way.

Another important option is dielectric mirrors. these are great to get the least power losses out of your quad module. Alternatively, you can just use alumanized mirrors but these are a great way to go. (Price is pending)

Next, you can add a TEC module to the unit for stability. This is a 20X20mm TEC rated for 5V @ 3A max. (Price is pending) There are 4 Nylon spacers that are included with the kit to sandwich the TEC between the base plate and the laser module.

And finally, an enclosure. The whole module with TEC is made to fit nicely in this Aluminum housing and is perfect for making a nice little beast of a laser module. The price is 75 Euros ($105USD)

All the prices here are set by Edison, I don't make a dime off of the sale of the components, only a discount on a few modules and a chance to get more of these units.

Here is what is included in the base kit for this quad module for 200 Euros...

4 - brass flexure mounts
2 - laser diode/LASORB PCB's
4 - brass lens mounts
4 - nylon standoffs
28 - Allen screws

While I don't make money on the kits, I do make money on services I offer. If anyone is interested in having one of these quad modules but doesn't want to do the whole build or wants me to build a module for them, let me know! I'd be glad to custom build whatever you'd like for a good price using one of these kits. I build one for michelrietveld. He has one in his projector. Its also perfect for building a 4 watt of blue. You can set both sliding diodeholders to the same height and stack 4 diodes next to eachother by sliding the mounts to the right position.

Shipment is 13 euro the piece and when buying two shipping is free.

Just to be clear , Adam (300evil) is doing the groupbuy here but i,m happy to help.

You can ask stacking questions and ordering by sending him a PM but i think he explained it very well.

Because the diodemount are slidable stacking is easy. Even people that are just getting into this hobby and have basic skills can stack the beams;)

I have about 60 diodes here so i can supply the diodes also.

I have asked Rob from stanwax lasers to step in and deliver the mirrors for this puppy:D

Nice work Edison on the design of the brass :)

The only thing I'd say is that getting the heat out is an issues for "big blues". That 20mm 3A TEC will do shed all... O_o

I modified my two modules slightly and used bigger, 30mm TEC's, and even that needs a bit more tinkering to get the heat issues sorted properly.
I also did a few more modifications for little odds and ends such as thermistor mounting et al.

All I know is that x8 diode blue is sweeeet...! *retardo

The first one who buys 5 units i will throw in the baseplate and other metal parts for free so that people can build an 8 setup with these babies;)

Tiny, the module is 2.13" (54mm) long by 1.26" (32mm) wide by 1.19" (30mm) tall including PCB for LASORB.

what are some of our fellow members builds getting for beam diameters?

at what distance are you interested in? (metric system pls)

Beamsize and divergence depends on the lenses you use. If the beamsize is to big at aperture the wrong lens is being used. If you use a good quality lens then the losses are low and with a short fl you will end up with a good beam. Most hobbyist are saving on lenses and that determins the result of the beam. I,m still amazed that axiz still exist :rolleyes:

If you stack the beams mechanicly to have higher powered red you do,nt want to alllign the module just before you have to do a show. That,s why a quality brass internal block is nessesary.

Can you imagine that you have to allingn the beams while everyone is having fun or time to have a chat with other people to expand their bussiness [popcorn]

Andythemechanic is building a Red with his blocks. He only needs the lenses and i will post them next monday so he cann finish it next week or so. That setup will produce 2 watts of red and is tec cooled. ;) So only 9 to go. Building a good quad starts with a good stable aligning system so now is the chance to get it. I will not do another run.....

Keep in mind that sending packages FROM europe TO USA weighing over 500grams now takes longer to process. This due to new regulations the US enforced being scared that stuff is sent over that is "terrorist" related.

To get a package over 500gr to US quickly you must use express since the stronger regulations are already in place for those packages. But that will cost more.

I went to the metalshop and have given the green light for manufacturing these babies. Now don,t think they start next week with manufacturing. If you need a laser next week buy a complete module but that will cost you an arm and a leg ;)
I have a meeting next week to discuss the small improvements. It takes a few weeks before everything is in production. The metalshop delivers very high quality and they have more clients then just me so its always takes some time. I will do my best to speed up the process:)

Nothing special. The brass blocks has also a baseplate and all plastic pins will be screwed in. The ones before had to be glued. Only two of them but Adam asked if i could look at this. Baseplate will be 6mm thick alluminium anodisized to mount the brass block on. :) Just for making it clear i will not do another groupbuy with adam of these.
It still takes allot of time and the list of PM,s is getting longer and longer due questions. I thought most people knew how to stack beams. Apperently not so this will be my last groupbuy of kits;) No effence to anyone. I,m very happy that people want to join this groupbuy. I just always think that things are easy to arrange or to build or make. That,s one of the mistakes i make everytime. Murphy,s law is hitting hard again

Hi Edision, its great that you are able to help other members out by making these kits, im also taking part and im in for one kit, I may have more, I have my eye on something so it depends on how things work our, regarding peoples questions about stacking beams, I have no idea but will experiment to get the best results. Maybe it would help you if you gave a general guidance emailed or printed to assist the person assembling the kit. This may help from answering individual questions. Sorry if I have misunderstood what you are saying, just a thought.*vigil

Attachment 24714For people that are interested in a top cover to turn it into a complete module that is possible. It will be high quality anodisized in a black finish. The bottomplate will be blank anodisized aluminium. The top cover will be completely made out of 1 piece of alluminium and fits perfectly on your kit. The price for these covers will be 80 euro the piece. Oh you will get a class 4 label and triangle to finish the module:)

I just want to say thank you for all that joined this groupbuy. I,m convinced that everyone can build his quad red or blue with this kit and if you go all the way with a top cover you have a module that you can use in the future for higher powered diodes just by swapping boards.;)
