Being on a rather tight budget these days, (wify’s birthday coming up..) I thought I would try a cheap ‘n ugly approach using odds-n-ends ‘n pieces of junk I have lying around the shop..

According to this (if it's not outdated) 532nm is 22 times brighter to the human eye than 445, which means with 2 watts of 445, only ~90mw of 532 is needed for correct balance. *retardo right?
Without looking for the chart I recall that 532 is 4-5 times as bright as 445. But, remember perceived brightness is effected by the intensity of the light and the higher beam quality of the 532 will increase this ratio further.
Log in and you will be able to see the chart that I posted.
Steve, my Kvant 1W has a 300mW green with a 1 watt 445 and 300mW of 640 and it is a bit green heavy sometimes. I am also building a 1.2W with 500mW 445, 300mW 532, and a mix of 150mW 640 and 300mW 660 which also looks a bit green heavy. 600mW of green will go nicely with 2 watts of blue but you may need to throw together a dual 660 rig also. >:)
I saw your chart, but, I'd take issue with the very high ratio. Refering to published curves for photopic and scotopic sensitivity it looks like the chart you posted agrees with the photopic (bright ambient light) curve while the scotopic curve (dark adapted) supports a lower 4:1 ratio. Looking at my 100mw 532 laser pointer next to my 1.5W 445 lab laser in a dark room it in no way is as bright, but by reducing the 445 to 700mw they are very close. Just to stir things up a bit why not purchase the most powerful laser within each wavelength and balance them with software for now. Whenever you want the most punch max them out at the expense of balance and as money/lasers become available then upgrade whichever laser is the week link in the future?

Planters, I agree that 22:1 ratio seems a bit steep. You said that your 100mW green 532 pointer appeared about the same brightness as the 445 when turned down to 700 mW, right? That'd be about a 7:1 ratio.
As far as purchasing lasers/ software etc, that's not the intended direction that I would like to go with this thread. It is meant to be a fun, non-serious do-it-yourself nuts and bolts type project (on the cheap) that is aimed towards amusement with pretty (or ugly, depending on your pov) pictures and stimulating conversation. ;)
Concerning photopic and scotopic vision curves, I'd really not like to go there either, because that topic has been done to death.O_o

I dont know what the beam specs are yet 'cause I haven't measured the spot size yet on the tree.. lol. I have to get it aimed down low enough to get my tape-measure out, and be able to reach it (it's about 18 ft up). As far as the tree goes, I don't think at 100 ft there will be (I hope ) enough heat generated to start a fire when I'm only running it about 2 minutes aimed there..

Yes, it's going into a projector. The 'smudge' is the 2nd LD beam which I'm having a focus problem with . It's also tilted off-axis a bit :/ Hopefully will have that solved shortly. :D
I am watching...I like to see anyone who builds things and see their creations. So many have lost the art of "Let's design this to do that and build it". Guess it is an older mindset thing. Not enough true hobby people left......as compared to 5 or 6 years ago here. Function over form rules to me, it can be dolled up later. Yes it may end up costing more....but the education along the way is priceless.

Here's my final outcome of the day. Not square exactly, but at 100 ft, not too bad right? (one's off-axis/ tilted, but too late to yank the diode and get it perfect.) Probly be good enough for the 4th of July neighborhood fireworks show.. (I hope)

According to this calculator, I have a beam divergence of about 1.8 mRad. Not great, but for home-made I'm semi-happy :o .. now back to work .
