SELEM 6: Show Q & A

I figure we're close enough to SELEM that a Show Q & A section would be appropriate.

Questions concerning the auditorium setup:

• Is there 'official' word as to whether a 3rd (center) RGB beam projector will be available on stage?
  (I could bring mine, but at only ~ 850mw, I figure it probably won't be quite up to par with the left/right beam projectors that will be on stage :o)
  
  
• DZ - in lieu of that, would there be any problem using your graphics projector to target a 12"x24" FS bounce mirror panel, centered and just below the main graphics zone?

Bounce -Mirror array for auditorium

If anyone other than just me would be interested in using it, I have a 10-ft "DJ truss" we could set up on stage, in front of and below the main projection screen, for use as bounce-mirror array. It can height adjust from just a few inches to around 8' off the ground.

I can equip it with a pretty decent assortment of FS bounce mirrors ~
If memory serves correctly, I should have at least (10) 2" mirrors, (4) 6" mirrors, (1) 8" mirror, and (1) 12" x 24" panel.

It should be available for setup early Friday afternoon...

Anyone else interested?

Need to talk to Aaron about this. The original plan was to have a pair of 1 watt Kvant projectors left and right, so an 850 mw RGB would fit right in as a center beam projector. (Graphics will be handled by DZ's dual-head gas rig.)

However, Aaron was talking with Justin at Pangolin about bringing some more projectors to support some new beam shows he's done that need more projectors on stage. I haven't heard anything more about it though, so we need Aaron to chime in here.

Note: In the interest of pleasing the folks who wanted to have the auditorium shows be as "balanced" as possible, I was planning to put the higher power projectors (Marc's, Frank's, etc) in the cafeteria. (Since there's no way we'll be able to match either of those two projectors in terms of power.)

This might be more usable in the cafeteria, but we'll have to see how things go. After going through all the trouble to get the cafeteria area arranged, I'd hate to end up with two "club SELEM" areas...

I like the idea of bounce mirrors though.

Definitely not looking for a 2nd "Club SELEM" - ;)

No hanging lights (although selective use looks pretty cool with some shows...)

The whole idea of using the truss is to have a fairly wide-spread array of bounce mirrors that could be targeted during shows. I figured a single height- adjustable truss would make it pretty easy to match the rig to just about any projector arrangement needed in the auditorium, and the larger mirrors should make it easier to hit the targets with other than just "beams" (which is especially easy in Beyond...).

I also have several portable lighting tripods and light bars that could be used, all of which are pretty easy to setup (at least prior to mounting & adjusting the mirrors).

I'll add this gear and the projector to the "might be needed for SELEM" list...

Bounce mirrors would be awesome! It'd be no problem to hit them with my projector or perhaps have someone connect their QM2K to one scan head while I run effects with the other scan head and have another projector (or 2) hitting bounce mirrors. There are plenty of ways we can set this up and make it very interactive.

Regarding the actual projector layout in the theater, I don't know if I mentioned it, but my intention is to have my projector sitting in the audience area and not on stage. Somewhere near the last row of seats in the front section. I'd opt for the balcony if I thought I had enough fiber though I am slightly concerned with divergence.

Sounds good!

IMHO, your projectors placed "low and in back" should make for a very cool arrangement for the graphics and bounce mirror effects!!
I used a similar arrangement for my Christmas show this past year, with the source beams all shooting low and toward the screen and bounce mirrors, with all the bounce shots turned back overhead above the audience.

Kind of a 'different' setup compared to wait we've used in the past -
but I had 40+ attendees at my Christmas show, lots of smiles, zero complaints! :D

Here's may plan for the 'populating' the truss if we use it:

• (4) 4" bounce mirrors, evenly spaced along the length of the truss.
• (1) 4", 8" or 12" mirror, centered and mounted on the lower truss bar - possibly with a difraction grating on it...
• (1) 12"x 24" panel, centered and mounted on the top half of the truss
• 2" mirrors, as needed, for additional bounce targets ~ like maybe from a 1-watt green sitting low on the stage...:)

Auditorium Chaos Manager

So, other than Adam, has it already been decided who is going to wrangle the schedule, setup, equipment, network, etc., etc., for the auditorium?

I figure with now TWO venues, Adam will have more than his hands full -
and feel probably someone needs to assist in both the auditorium, and from the "Club SELEM" side of the house, as well!

I'll throw my hat in to assist in the auditorium if needed...

They can go wherever Buffo see's fit. I don't really care. I suspect the cafeteria, as the plan for the auditorium has been pretty much been formulated. If for some reason the other Kvants fall through or there is an issue, I was just indicating I'll have two available as well. For the auditorium, I'm guessing the only thing of mine will be computer or DAC related if I run any shows, as I have a lot of things not Pangolin based - like Gabe's Moncha shows for example.

Also, Bill Benner said that he'd like to do his Pangolin presentation around 3 PM Saturday afternoon, so we need to plan accordingly. Likewise, I know that Greg Southerland is planning a Lumia demo of some kind, so we need to fit that into the schedule too.

I don't have an equipment list yet, no. Not 100% sure it's needed though, since apart from a few projectors which have already been identified, everything else will be in the Cafeteria.

The only job that is 100% confirmed so far is sound. Mario (Ragdoll) has agreed to set up the systems in the auditorium and cafeteria. Brad (Massivesound) has volunteered to assist him.

Greg was talking about printing some name tags, as soon as I have a completed list (which won't be until next tuesday).

No one has volunteered to be in "charge" of the auditorium. Aaron was talking about helping out, but he's not sure he's going yet. So the position is open right now, if you're willing...

• Who is planning to provide fog machines?
• Is ALL sound gear going to be provided, including an audio mixer, all cables, etc.?
• Are the presentations (Pangolin, etc.) going to be in the auditorium, or class room?

If needed, I can provide (2) QM2000 ~ (1) .NET, and (1) in a micro-PC.
I can provide other gear as well - just need to get an idea of who has already "comitted" to what.

SELEM Auditorium Show List

If you are planning to run shows in the auditorium, please chime in!!

For now, we don't necessarily need a detailed listing, but would like to get a rough idea of total run time for your shows, what type of controller you'll using, any special requirements / arrangements that need to be made to run the shows, and any preference for a particular "block" time you would like to run the shows.

I suggest we plan on using the mid-to-late mornings as prep time as needed to setup zones, target bounce mirrors, etc., with the afternoons and evenings for the shows.

I'll consolidate here as folks respond.

Need to speak with Aaron about this. He was planning to bring a pair of Kvant spectrum 1 watt RGB's to use as the left and right beam projectors for the Auditorium. In fact, he had talked about bringing some extra projectors as well, to go along with some special versions of popular Pangolin shows that had been modified to support extra projectors. But I haven't heard anything from him in a couple weeks. Aaron?

I will have a 4 port router and an 8 port switch. That should be enough for what we will have in the Auditorium. I won't have any Ethernet cable though. Need to check with Frank, as he was in charge of networking last time. He may have more gear and cable he can bring (if needed).

Mario is bringing two separate sound systems and two mixers. I don't know what other cables he will have though. I will have my collection of cable of course, but I suggest that anyone who will need to tie into the sound system should plan on bringing at least a 20 ft cable to do so...

The plan is to have them in the upstairs classroom. However, Bill has hinted at one demonstration that might end up being moved into the Auditorium. If it happens, it will be something very special, and will only be after the rest of his normal Pangolin presentation. I can't say more about this right now, as it's still very much in the planning stage. For now, let's plan on having the presentations in the classroom. (We also have the stage area behind the curtain, as well as the backstage and lobby areas available to us.)

I don't know that I'm bringing all that but, if I know we need something I can certainly put it in the car.

SELEM Auditorium Equipment List

If you are bringing any gear to be used specifically for the auditorium, please chime in, and I'll start consolidating here.

Here' what we're looking for:

• Any projectors you plan to use in the auditorium
• Any controllers you plan to use in the auditorium
• Any other gear - smoke machines, sound equipment & cables, etc - for use in the auditorium
• Any LAN equipment and cables you plan to use in the auditorium

Also, I plan to implement fixed IP addresses for the LAN gear (NO router, NO Internet on the "control" LAN), so please let me know how many IP addresses you'll need. If you need a pre-assigned IP address in the 192.168.1.xxx subnet (QM.net controllers, "keyboardless" PC's, etc.) please let me know.

If you are providing a projector on stage and plan to connect with a long ILDA cable, make sure you have one that is long enough to stretch from the stage to the "control area" in the back of the auditorium where DZ's rig will be set up. I hope to have a network switch / hub in the control area and on stage, with the intent of minimizing the requirement for long ILDA cable runs.

Make sure you bring any extension cords you think you might need!!

I'd like to make a suggestion for running shows, how about we set it up in sections, example: 3-5pm open, 5-6pm break, 6-8pm is classic rock, 8-9pm break, 9-11pm pink floyd, etc.

What about sound, from what I understand Club SELEM is covered, but what do we have for the auditorium? How about a mixer?

As for equipment, I have 2 QM2K's in a single PC, I can run the .net program to get them both on the network if desired. I prefer to leave my QM2K's attached to my projector, but at some point I'm sure we can connect up someone elses. ADAT or other DAC may take some playing with, I put shutter controls in my rack to bypass pin 13 when attached to ADAT, but I don't know about color, both my PCAOM's are receiving differential from my QM2K's and I'm not sure if I need to modify an incoming single ended signal to be more compatible. I may need some time to play with this when we get there. I'll be sure to bring my o'scope!

The "block schedule" idea sounds pretty good, but I'd hate to see the mornings go to waste ~I'd still like to have access the gear in the AM for tweaking zones, beam targeting practice, etc. Perhaps start a bit earlier in the PM, and forego the 2nd PM break. Kind of "compact" the schedule somewhat to give folks time to move to the other venue later in the evening. Just an idea to discuss along the way...

I fully agree with your wish to keep your projector connected to your own computer! In fact, one of my goals is to NOT rearrange projectors and controllers any more than absolutely necessary. I can't speak much to the other controller systems - not familiar - but I would really like to network as many Pango-equipped systems as possible, and also be in a position to "pre-plan" as much as possible - hence, my push to go for assigned IP addressses, planned in advance.

I really believe that everyone that wants to should be given the opportunity to run THEIR shows, from THEIR computers. This is part of my reason for wanting to make the most of the mornings - a little coordination, zone-tweaking, and projector settings standardization ahead of time, and anyone with an LD2000-equipped laptop should be able to plug into the LAN, and run their shows. SELEM is about the ony opportunity that many of us will have to actually get the experience of both designing AND running a multi-projector show, and I definitely want that experience, start to finish!! :cool:

From talking with Adam, it sounds like the sound system is supposed to be covered...fingers crossed... *vigil

That would be...none. I don't have any QM.net's. The Netlase with the Phonenix 4 Pro+ is the only thing I have with an IP address and I just set it up the other day 192.161.1.100 or some such nonsense like that. I'm not net savvy.

Oh, and I'm a wee bit concerned I might be fucked with the second Kvant. It's in transit right now from Slovenia to here and I got a call from DHL for some paperwork today. It's sitting in Kentucky waiting to clear and I think it was opened because they wanted my SS number and me to fill out an FDA 2977 form or whatever the number is. It's the one about importing a radiological device and whether its compliant or not. I checked that it's not and wouldn't be entered into commerce until being made compliant and that I'd be sending in the petition in the next 60 days or something. I'm planning on posting a "HELP NEED ADVICE" thread shortly - just didn't have time tonight.

Hey Y'all; sorry I have not chimed in until now. I have had a bunch of stuff going on, still do, but have now had some time to plan a bit more than I have so far.

I recently got the chance to set up a laser show room that used 6 projectors, 5 for beams and 1 for graphics, and I thought that would be a great set up for the auditorium. With DZ's set up we can either do 2 graphic projectors or 1 graphics and 1 special FX table. *retardo

To show off the show room I went through close to 30 LD2000 shows, some stock, some not, and changed the projection zones to use 5 or 6 zones depending on if there were beam shows or graphic shows. I have 26 of them in an Autoplay list to start with.

As for projectors I am only planning on bringing the 2 Kvants and my DIY5000; I will try to get two more so we have all 5 beam projectors but cannot be sure I can get two more projectors. It might be best to put Brads 2 Kvants down as auditorium projectors to start with. *vigil Maybe, if someone has an extra graphics capable projector they can spare, we may want to get a "third" graphics projector so DZ can just sit there and play with special FX on both "heads" all weekend; since he's so special anyway. *DZ

As an update, the new new puppy arrived on Monday - even with my paperwork glitch on the 2877. So, yes, both Spectrum 1.6's will be there. :) We used my build from Marc (3 watt) last year as the graphics box for the auditorium so, it could be available this year as well. I'll likely have some more pj's there too for the cafeteria and, if there is room, I'll bring the 1 watt argon ML-10 mobolazer.

I STILL would love for you guys to experience Zambras in Asheville but, at a bit over an hour away, I know that just doesn't work well with SELEM. Plus, laserists don't have money... but, un-frickin' beliveable gastronomic experience! Worth every penny and, even suffering the round trip. I'd hoped to load the van up and do it last year but, it's a good 4 hour chunk of time commmitment. :(

where did you get these shows? my regrets about not being able to make SELEM are increasing by the moment.

I could post my list if that will tempt ya to come. However it seems to be missing some Swami show files, loading that jpg didn;t work on my machine. lol

IMHO, your projectors placed "low and in back" should make for a very cool arrangement for the graphics and bounce mirror effects!!
I used a similar arrangement for my Christmas show this past year, with the source beams all shooting low and toward the screen and bounce mirrors, with all the bounce shots turned back overhead above the audience.

Kind of a 'different' setup compared to wait we've used in the past -
but I had 40+ attendees at my Christmas show, lots of smiles, zero complaints! :D

Here's may plan for the 'populating' the truss if we use it:

• (4) 4" bounce mirrors, evenly spaced along the length of the truss.
• (1) 4", 8" or 12" mirror, centered and mounted on the lower truss bar - possibly with a difraction grating on it...
• (1) 12"x 24" panel, centered and mounted on the top half of the truss
• 2" mirrors, as needed, for additional bounce targets ~ like maybe from a 1-watt green sitting low on the stage...:)

Even though I won't be up until sometime Friday, still planning on bringing the mirror truss - just in case.... :)
