Just something to show: New projector by Edison

Hello guys

Here are some new pictures of my new Projector that i have developed. Manufacturing is done by the Local metalshop. This projector is my new RGB housing that is heatsink based so completely sealed to keep the dust out. The customer can choose between a powercon out or ethernet when a dac is installed. This can be any ethernet dac.

Below the features:

Heatsink based so completely sealed
Adjustable mirrormounts that can be reached by removing the grommets in the frontpanel
Powercon out for those who have a qm2000.net (suggestion made by Hobbybob) Can also be ethercon when dac is installed.
Window protection cover
Ilda in and out
scaling
Digital X and Y swap
keyswitch
remote interlock
Timer delay
reset
Size: 300mm x 213mm x 230mm

The case is pre-drilled and tapped for my own blue and red lasers to drop in. The case is flexible in use and so powers can vary up to the request by the customer. The bracket for these cases will be ready in 4 weeks.

Enjoy the Pictures

How are you going to cool the smps power supplies if the case is sealed? RGB and Laser-image get around this by using custom power supplies that are designed to be mounted to a heatsink... Looks good BTW ;)

Only one thing I would question is using rotary knobs for switching X & Y. Rotary knobs tend to be more prone to being knocked and broken. Personally I'd have used small rocker switches.

Otherwise looks great!

look at the back picture, i can see 2 buttons.
I think the 2 buttons are for negative invert to positive.
The knobs are probly only there for making it thinner or wider (not invert).

Rotary knobs knocked?
You should take good care of your projector anyway, an apperture is also fragile to scratching.

Well Whitelight has a point it can get rough sometimes seting up a lasershow especcially with those light guys with flightcases and other stuff that they drag allong.I migh choose a bigger but lower knob but we will see.

:)

Looking really great Edison!

Just a thing I don't understand, why is it so high? It may be just an impression, but looks like there is a lot of empty space on the bottom...

About SMPS cooling, usually the power transistors are already transfering the heat to the mounting plate so with a bit of thermal grease between them and the heat sink, they stay quite cool, especially if the load is not that high and they have a great efficiency.

Very nice looking always liked the case you build. Not sure if your looking for input, but if you have the XY knobs there why not add 3 more for color balance, that way if someone tosses in a smaller or bigger green everything could be balanced externally.

The case is 23 cm high because i choosed the ildaboard that fits the backpanel the board is 67 mm high and another 2.5mm for the alluminium struth. But as all thing i might choose for a internal one and then i don,t need the height. Or i might move it to the lower level behind the scanners. But there are always pro,s and con,s. If people don,t like the height buy an RGB lasersystems those are flat:p

Also if you look at others in the market they have bigger cases. I have an extremely small design ready but that will be manufactured when the next ship of money comes in. I can only develop stuff when people buy stuff. I move forward in development and that is the most important thing and soon with all my modules have a telescope that will be another step forward.:) I have a road map in my head where i want to be now and in the near future. I,m going to get there and i have the feeling that i,m more then half way.

Just to be clear, just buying an empty case is not possible.

Hi Johan,

Nice job! That looks really good:cool: professional and sturdy.

Well done

Kit:)

Can i ask a REALLY dumb and off topic question? LOL...sorry...

Where the HELL are all of you guys across the pond getting your enclosures designed and manufactured from? I CAN NOT find a good, reasonably priced, enclosure designer/manufacturer here in the USA.

WTF!!!

Edison- beautiful case. I should just send you my design and have you do them over there.

-Marc

To be honest the metalshop i work with is not the cheapest but they double or even triple check if everyting is ok before sending it to the anodisizer. The case isn,t very cheap though. You need to manufacture at least 10 to make it even worth doing it. I have 10 cases wich 2 of them are going to a customer. 2 of them will be my demo projectors with 1 watt green, 1 watt red and 1.5 watt blue in it. The demo,s will have a moncha dac inside.

I have plans for a satalite version of it. I might make it 200 mm square with the same struths. We will see. ;)

Added one more picture to show the wiring:)

WOooooooooooooOW :| AWESOME !!!!!!!!!! That's what i call a projector !
That shitty thing of mine is waste of time :) i think i'm going to sell him :P

Nice work !

Gr Sander

btw: thanks for showing the wiring how you've done it.
Looks very neat !! But even now i can't understand how i need to do it :)
Because i have 6 psu's in de projector. I have been thinking a while.
Maybe i can try to put the ILDAboard + SCANNERS + DS3board at 1 psu
Stanwax told me to do that so, but i wanted the ILDAboard + fans @ 1 psu.

My projector is not finished yet, but i'm glad i've choosed the RGB level pots, because my modules are totally not balanced ; all modules at full power.
Now i can simply retune te colour balance with the external knobs. Otherwise i need to go to projector properties to correct the colors everytime when i switch from beam & graphics show.
With the modules at full power the graphics are very bad colour balanced.

But i have a question for Mr. Edison : Do you think it's possible to connect in my case the X Y level pots only board with all the other boards i have installed ???
# i have already the COLORboard @ ILDA , DS3board with : RGB level pots + AXIS FLIP buttons. #

Sure no problem. Need to have 2 pots that,s all:)

Here are some beamshots from the new projector. Enjoy the pictures:)

Nice pictures ! Oh i love the color purple/magenta ! It looks awesome bright !
You're red & blue looks very nice man ! great work !

Thanks!!! Oh sen me the ildaboard back because i need it;)

Marc,

Just do a search for sheet metal fabricators ;)

A quick search turned up the following..

Hi Guys,

I have bought 2 of these babies of Edison will be receiving them next week cant wait!! I will do a full review when I get them but know they are going to be quality anyway. I like the fact that everything is based on a heatsink and the red and blue have a very low divergence.
I have been waiting to get a RGB laser since March after a LOT of searching found Edison and really like his products and the advice he's gives great guy!!

Oh and Edison the beam shots are looking nice loving the colours :-)

Thanks John

Here are some pictures of the first projector completely finished. I recieved the bracket yesterday and they fit perfectly.

Thanks for the support and looking forward to see the first show on youtube.

If anyone is interested in a projector that is possible. I have 8 cases left to build projectors with. Don,t expect a " chinese " price for this projector.

edison,
Do you have any images that show the layout of the laser deck relative to the fan/heat sink?

No i don,t have them. The lasers are mounted on the heatsink but that is obvious i guess. Sorry:shame:

I guess I am missing that. The lasers are mounted to the finned Al plate holding the fans? Or is this heat sink thermally conducting from a plate mounted mid-level? I might be turned around/upside down.

Hey Planters, i think i know what you meaning. The lasers are mounted at the "mid-level" AL plate. Heat is going up and then the very nice heatsink is absorbing heat from air and cools it.
Sorry for my bad English :) I have seen the design from Mr. Edison. I think it's an amazing design. The projector i have build is really sucks besides edison's one.
It's 4 time smaller, lighter than the one i have. The lasers inside are a lot of better than the big laser-waves i have. The projector is completely closed.
No air can come in. The one i have do have 2x 92mm fans in de lower level. and only push air outside the casing and sucks air inside through dustfilters.
But problem is i have a negative air flow. Now dust comes everywhere where i don't want it. Edison did a well job with thinking of that ! reallly nice !

and also the casing is 100% Alu. I think it will be good enough to thermally conduct heat from the whole casing.

Well There is a big difference between designing and then let the metalshop do their work then do it all by yourself.
The reason is simple, customers won,t except a handmade case that is spraypainted and looks sligtly different when buying 2 or more. I look at it if i can mass produce this projector and so everything should be spot on. The next will be a smaller version that is extremely small.

Internally in this one i need to make some slight chances to make it more practical and i might change the height. I,m thinking of using an internalboard version of the ildaboard in the next one so it can be square in height and debt so then it will be 300mm x213 mm x213mm. Other then that i won,t change anything. :)

Hello Guys here are some pictures of the second projector i finished for Systematic lasers. To give you a peek ik the kitchen i also included a picture of the heatsink with the lasers on top. Enjoy!!!:D

Nice and clean lookin.

Woow that's really cool man ! i didn't know that you installed the modules upside down.
Looks fantastic and have space enough ! I love to see some more beamshots :)

My projector is still not what i expected. Blue & Red are too big.
Some cheap chinese projectors do have better beamspecs than the lasers i have.

I see you used a keylock this time.

Hello Sander, a little offtopic, my excuse!
You could use a colourboard to correct the balance in it's colours.

Thanks guys. The Plastic grey key is the overide for the Remote emergency stop ( i borrowed it from my blue ).I have 8 of these cases now and i have 43 modules left. That means i can fill all 8 cases with modules so i will end up with 8 of these. However i will start with 1 as a Demo projector. This Demo projector will have faster scanners like an eyemagic set or something else. The Demo will have 1 watt green, 1.3 watt of red and 2 watt blue:) I will show that at the next Lem.Michel rietveld will also get one of this cases because he saved my ass big time by lending his projector for the time being to a customer as i had troubles of finishing a projector caused by delivery problems. Or he will get more red for that. >:) I might give him an RB module with 1.4 watt and 1 watt blue in one housing next year since RB modules are coming soon.

I,m planning to have this case lower in height but that is way down on my priority list. Early next year i,m going to start with bigger reds, blue,s and RGB modules because its time. Green modules is another thing on my priority list :) Sometimes i wish a day had 36 hours. *retardo

This is our second projector from Johan (Edison) really looking forward to getting them both connected up together this week :)

We received the first one off Johan a little while ago and have got to say the build quality is top notch, it's constructed to be a solid air tight unit. It has 2 removable grommets on the front of the unit that are removable for alignment so no opening of the projector which makes things very easier.

Beam quality is great, very stable. We have performed a graphic show for a client with the one we have already and it performed excellently.

We have got another show coming up on the 15th December where we will be using both of these units, a DMX smoke machine and 2 Martin moving heads. We will post pictures up so you can all see some beam shots etc.

As we spoke before Johan, we are very interested in your RGB modules next year for a 3rd Edison projector :o) We'll be keeping a close eye on developments ;)

Anyone thinking of getting one of these units we would definitely recommend it. It's a great unit and comes with a great service from Johan, he is always willing to have a chat about any questions you may have and has got some good developments on the way :)

Thanks John. I will keep you updated. I,m planning to have the RGB and RB modules manufactured in the end of january. Many people want RGB and most people know where to get a green module anyway. RGB modules will be later (probably in may). It all depends on cashflow. The more people think Fuck it i will buy from edison instead because of his developments that i can bennefit from in the near future, the sooner i can get things done;) I know i,m not the fastest in the market in terms of delivery but it will go faster now that i can deliver modules from stock:)

Hey Johan, very good looking setup! If your projectors were available before I built mines I think I'd have one from you instead :)

Hi guys,

I said I would put some pics up of my projectors from Edison in action. I received my 2nd one on Wednesday and got a call on Thursday by a band asking if I could do a laser show for them so perfect timing! :)

Here are a few beams shots which do not do them justice as taken on my phone but I have uploaded a video to Youtube also. Have a look at that:
