There are audio dacs which can be used as a laser controller.
But is there also a way to build your own ADAT?
A guide or a aim at the right direction would be much apreciated.
Thanks :)

For playback only:
Buy a suitable HD recorder or a EtherDream from J4CBO here.
Etherdream plays wave files.
For going both ways:
Certain audio cards, ie older Echo Layla, Some Echo Gina, are DC coupled to begin with.
Used Adats are about 100$ for the right ones.
Steve
sweet. its mostly because I want to sorta gift my friend gabe a adat so he can sell his work properly.
Or at least help him make one.
Playing back the wave files is no problem, i got LC-adat to convert to ilda.|
100$ is not expensive but imho it can be cheaper and easier.
ADATS are also big right? so shipping would be a pain I believe.
Edit: and with the older ones. you mean I can use those?
Black faced unit is a simple mod. Good luck with LC-ADAT many have tried and i think mike dunn and bill himself are the only ones that have gotten perfect tranfers. how is an ADAT gonna help him be more of a pro? They really are used no-where anylonger. Most have gone all hd-24 with the hard drive caddies.
John
many
Actually someone teached me how to use an ADAT quite some months ago.
And he recorded something and send me files and I actually got an very old show which projects perfect (well at least the projections looked great).
He wanted to sell me his ADAT later on, but for the price he was asking for I didn't do it.
The reason for the ADAT is that he's stuck with his software with NO ilda export... the software he used is not used by many which kinda sucks.
The show wasn't made with stockframes but own made frames, so it should be more then acceptible for him to be able to export.
If these are the shows he is letting Brad playback at SELEM with his permission I can convert them to wav's and forward to you for LC-ADAT conversion to ilda. PM me if you or he need this done.
For what you want to do, even if he gets an ADAT you will need a light pipe audio card rme emu etc to capture it back into the computer as way files to convert using lcadat.
John
yep what polishedball said...
if anything I can also convert, will have catamod adats and HD-24's
Echo Layla works well, and is still supported to some extent, but you might need XP to use it.
"100$ is not expensive but imho it can be cheaper and easier."
Where in the world do you get that idea? 8 channel soundcards do not grow on trees, and are declining in popularity right now.
Steve
But if I read this right he needs the record function to make wav files to convert to ildas. A sound card will do no good. Tape is about the only affordable solution then capture back in via light pipe using abelton or the likes
Thanks for the advice guys.
This is really helping both me and on the longer term my buddy out :)
I will tell him he can get the shows ripped to wav at selem.
@flecom well its not that 100$ is expensive.
But from what i've seen the ADAT's are kinda big and heavy (I think)
So the shipping would make it a lot more expensive.
A small usb sound card (if it was possible) would be a lot easier to ship/transport.
But its clear that a sound card cannot be used directly so I understand.
Will consider getting an Adat myself at some point then :)
But for now the recording offer is really apreciated.
Just bringing this post back up, because i'm interested in getting what I need to making some ild files, could anyone just show me what i need to buy?
Also did john and brad ever get id done at selem? I never got anything so i'm not aware.
Thanks guys!
John has everything and is working on it for you. I lent him one of my Moncha DAC's and also gave him a lot of shows to convert. One of his co-workers who is also now into lasers won Quickshow as a door prize so I gave him a bunch of shows for that too. He's got a lot on his plate right now so don't worry... it will be done for you!
Awesome!
But does anyone know if I could get my hands on the stuff to do it myself? I'd rather do it myself and not bother other guys to do it.
LaserBoy can open waves made from ADAT transcriptions and convert them to ILDA.
Also, at the very least, you need a modified Dolby 7.1 sound card to play back the waves you capture from an ADAT tape. That way you get the stereo sound tracks! Other laser DACs might be able to play back LaserBoy waves, but they don't have audio outputs.
James. :)
Put the wave in the ..\LaserBoy\wav\unformatted\ folder and open it from there.
an unformatted wave is a wave that was not made in LaserBoy and does not have any of the LB header information or sub-code markers for frames and key frames.
Look in the [Tab] menu for item g unframed wave sample per frame. This is how many samples there will be in each frame.
When you go to open an unformatted wave you might choose option 6 reframe based on blanking. It might work depending on what DAC was used to make the ADAT recording.

thats all nice and stuff, but does laserboy also restore the original colors?
Because if your using a color pallete during capture then good luck getting red at 100% again + you always lose a bit of signal power during capture :)
I prefer sticking with LC-adat.
Actually, the first thing you want to do is open the wave or waves in Audacity and do a normalization (to 0dB with DC offsets intact) on at least the color channels!
Then import that into LaserBoy.
LaserBoy imports color from waves in 24-bit true color.
If you want more perfect colors than that, and you know for sure that the colors came from a specific palette, select or load that palette and do a best match of all frames to that palette.
Or if you know the whole thing came from a palette and you don't know what it is, LaserBoy can reduce the whole frame-set down to a single palette that you can edit.
(... or individual palettes per frame, whatever ...)
COLOR PERFECTION! :)
BTW, it's far better to ask about how or what to do in LaserBoy then it is to critisize it for not being able to do something.
First off, it might already be able to do it and you just don't know how.
Second, if it can be done but it isn't yet directly supported, I might just like to add that capability and would appreciate your cooperative input.
There is always a way and LaserBoy almost always nails it.
No other application gives you the kind of control of colors or color palettes that LaserBoy does.
If you know anything about the ILDA format issues about palettes and color tables, or ADAT and its relationship to LaserBoy waves, then you would know this is totally in the LaserBoy Wheelhouse.
