New Abstract/Graphic show "Geronimo"

Just wrapped up my last show for SELEM.

This is an abstract show with digitized video sequences.

The native american hoop dancer is Nakota LaRance, a six-time World Championship winner who recently toured with Cirque du Soleil for the "Totem" show.

the dance footage was shot (not by me) in the sand dunes.

I did the video manipulation and sequencing in Final Cut Pro Studio, the video to ilda conversion with Lasercam, and the show sequencing and abstracts in LSX. Played through an Etherdream DAC and my homemade projector.

enjoy!

Fantastic work Chris :), thanks for sharing.

Not normally a fan of graphics but fantastic show Swami. In fact dare I say it, best I've ever seen. :)

BTW, been meaning to ask you as I saw pictures in the other thread of your studio set up. Do you do professional dance video for a living or is it just a very posh home studio?

Also, don't know if you'd consider releasing the uncut version of the footage of the dancer alone as an lasercam ILDA, but it would make a great rave dancer cue in its own right.

Good lord!

When my sons and I visited SELEM two years ago we enjoyed it, but when we saw the show "Rhythm is a Dancer" we all agreed that was the best show we had ever seen. Since then I have built a lot of hardware, but my family has grown a little board with the limited selection of shows that we have been able to display. At some point it doesn't matter how many watts you have or how tight your beams are if the content is limited. And then this! The video, the graphics and even the light touches of lumia here and there are wonderful. We all agreed, now even my wife, that this is the best show yet. Kudos!

thank you!

there was actually very little footage that was of the right nature to feed through lasercam (roughly one minute). unfortunately, i don't have permission to make it available.

i didn't shoot the footage, so the rules aren't mine. ;(

thank you planters!

i hope that my work inspires other people. there are some inexpensive and really excellent laser show packages and dacs available these days, and i've love to see a resurgence of original and interesting shows.

Out of curiosity, what version of Final Cut are you using?

All I can say Chris is Wow!!!... And still picking my jaw up off the floor...

Mark

Chris, you should enter this in next year's ILDA award competition. Seriously.

Adam

count on it!

thank you

SO looking forward to seeing these live next week. :) I've got a 27" monitor but I know it still doesn't come close to the real thing.

Nice work!

not even close, and i put a pretty big effort into making half decent videos.

Very inspiring indeed! Amazing. Thanks for sharing...

So many great people here on PL have taught me so much in so short a time.

But I gotta say, swamidog, you've been consistently producing the most inspiring stuff.
I really love your work.

I'm kicking myself for not being able to make SELEM this year, but I just can't do it. I'm hoping there's a chance someone will record your session -- even bootleg movie style with a shaky cam and bad audio -- something I could buy off the street here in NYC for $5. :)

Cheers,
~bill

I like this a lot. Very satisfying, very psychedelic. I think if Tangerine Dream in their prime could done it with light it might have been like that.

Great job Chris, keep up the great work! I look forward to seeing it SEALEM, hopefully we can score the laser dome for a show.

Adam

or through the omniscan at PHXLEM!

I decided to try this show on our big video projector and here is another first. Because the video is so well recorded and the RECORDED contrast is so high this is the first laser show I have successfully projected that looks as good as an RGB laser projector. I don't think I am exaggerating here. As I can't upload it and try this side by side I can't give a firm estimate of a power equivalent, but when I overlay a virtual DJ from Pangolin and project waves from a balanced 9W RGB @ 25% power the line intensity is close. The projector I am using is a 4,500 lumen DLP. This projector can handle HD, but because the line width of each pixel @ 1920H is 1/3 mrad this does not add any benefit unless there is some edge smoothing. The problem with this projector and I guess some others is that to maintain the laser-like high contrast it has to be run no higher than 50% brightness. If there are some truly high contrast projectors that maintain their brightness at a higher % power output and are in the 1,800 to 2,000 lumen range these might also be quite affordable and to overlay two to three of these...then non coherent, legal projections. Just thinking

that's very interesting..

if it's a useful data point, my little projector does almost exactly 3W at a decent color balanced white (i need more red before i can really crank it).

i shot the video at iso 100, f20, 1/30 second shutter speed, and 30fps.
