That's cool. They look smaller, too. I imagine the secrets from the 506s are starting to make their rounds.
It looks nice but is there any change in coil winding or anything or just part quality and tolerance?? It will mean better linearity and less shake from larger distance but ramping up the speed wont show the performance of the galvo sets without a proper retune. At least use the ilda test pattern and tune it to 50k and show us what the circkle looks like.. or some scope images.
Maybe I missed it but what angle were these scanning at?
Yeah.Let me say DT50 in between 6210 and 6215.Many years ago I have been make the galvo like 6210,but that is too long hard to make and hard to keep a same quality.
So I get a compromise proposal DT50.Of course that DT50 longer shaft and coil.DT50 not for speed only, that need higher power driverr, main for large mirrors.
Most max 60 degress,DT50W max 85 degress for 5mm beam.

all the laser show videos i post are projected with an ancient set of DT40W's. i'm amazed at how well they've stood up to my abuse over the last 7 years or so. i'm interested in trying out your updated galvos.

What is the aperture for the DT50BB ?
What is scan speed and angle for the DT50BB with the mirrors for 7-8mm?
There is no a standard answer this question.
What the speed at full angle? That depend on your shows and graph.
So we have a suggest:listen and touch.
If you make a show the scanner of noise not natural, set lower speed or angle.
At the same time touch the scanner mount,if just a little then just going,if very hot stop right now, don't let the galvo too hot.
DT50 alway lower heat than DT40,this is an important merit.:p
What is the cost for DT50BB, and do you sell them directly?
Hey Ryan,
I just got a scope and a function generator for tuning some Cambridge 6210H's that I bought off from fleabay. I got the manual from Cambridge for tuning the galvos--which have test points for the function generator and scope. I guess for looking at the tuning specs for other manufacturer's galvos and boards, that do not have testing points, I could input the a sinusoidal waveform via X+, X- inputs, but where would I put the scope probes for measuring output?
Thanks
Rick
I've done my initial tuning that way for years. Cambridge used to give classes on how to do that method at LEMS and ILDA conferences. They also issued a handout on tuning to take with you. On the clone amps, you have to locate test point one and test point two by reverse engineering the position detector circuit. Most have the position sensor test point brought out and just labeled scan fail or test point on the board. Many amps simply do not have the test point.
~
THE SEVERE WARNING: WHILE CAMBRIDGE HAS YOU TUNE THE POSITION SENSOR OUTPUT TO 0.5V per DEGREE OR SIMILAR, THE CLONE AMPLIFIERS MAY NOT USE THIS CONVENIENT NUMBER AND MAY HAVE OTHER CALIBRATION FACTORS. NONE OF WHICH HAVE EVER BEEN PUBLISHED.
~
If you are tuning a cloned amplifier from scratch, accurately measure the volts per degree with their galvo before retuning the amp, or you may find yourself oscillating or unable to get a stable test pattern.
~
I've never seen the maker of a clone amplifier publish the Amplifier Volts Per Degree number, they either do not understand it or just do not wish to do it. Often they do change the resistor values to more or less suit their position sensor gain or different source LEDs/ detector PDs. So when you tune a clone or copy galvo amp from scratch that way, you can really dig yourself into a pit, if you mess with the position sensor initial setup per the Cambridge procedures. The slew rate change caused by adjusting the factor propagates through the whole servo loop.
~
For example, when I sold the modified amps for the 506s, the 506 has an awesome position sensor output voltage , we had to scale back the gains in the position sensor differential amplifier. Bill optimized that number in Orlando on the prototype,
If I'm messing with a clone/copy on the bench, I check the resistor values in the diff amp portion of the position sensor circuit. I also check the max position sensor LED current, as on some cloned amps, this can be quite high, and perhaps too high if I'm tuning a clone amp for a Cambridge or Scannermax Galvo. Often I'll buy a Chinese amp and use it with a US made Galvo, hence this little paragraph.
~
Another hint, the Cambridge tuning in the manual is usually for maximum speed, when I do that, I have actually detune the amp 10-20% and then go find the ILDA tuning by the test pattern. You will possibly have to back off on servo gain and derivative once you do the factory "square wave" tuning, in order to get the ILDA pattern into shape.
~
~
As for the signal generator, you can either build a differential sender circuit (Attached fragment in PNG) Link to full, original, ancient copy of ILDA document: http://photonlexicon.com/forums/atta...8&d=1390537157.
~
Or just ground the amp's Neg input and use the Pos input with the signal generator, remembering that you may now need double the input voltage for the same scan angle. If you build the "official" diff driver circuit, add a 100K or 1 Meg to ground on its input to pull its output to a weak zero voltage in case you disconnect the signal generator.

If I have time this weekend I'll show how to measure the 3 dB down sine response for poor Jian, who's post/thread has been hijacked many times now...

I am curious how a 8.5mm wide mirror can scan a beam 85 degrees as you say.
My math tells me that the mirror would need to be 12.41mm wide to be able to do this
My math also tells me that a 8.5mm wide mirror can only move a 5mm beam by a maximum of 18 degrees optical "forward", for a total of a 36 degree symmetrical scan angle.
Can you please clarify this for me - with math and facts and such? Thanks
Who say scann at 85 degress all of beam on the mirror?
For 5mm beam is when the scanner working not max angle, maybe <50 degress.
When >50 degress maybe lose 40%,but still working.Like you show a 85 degress circle you can
see a complete circle, but don't need care how many power at the edge.
But if you use a max 60 degress DT50 when you show 85% degress circle you see a NOT complete circle.
Laser out of the mirrors.
That is the different.:)
I mean, the words
Kind of implies that it can scan a 5mm beam through 85 degrees...Quote:
DT50W max 85 degress for 5mm beam.
See when I spec a mirror set, 4.5mm at 60 degrees, it will move a 4.5mm beam through a full 60 degrees optical without any losses. If I say 10mm at 40 degrees, it will scan a full 10mm beam through a full 40 degrees without any losses. Thats how to accurately spec something, and the honest way as well.
But maybe instead I should just call it a 10mm 100 degrees mirror set, im sure some part of the mirror will capture some part of the beam... seems to be the logic being used here.
I digress.
Good luck with the sales.
Attachment 51930
Attachment 51931
This is what a 5mm beam looks like projected through this mirror set, at 85 degrees optical, both extremes, for anyone curious
(Obviously not these scanners, but the beam and mirrors are accurate)
Hey Ryan,
Could you CAD model the DT50BB and see the max angle you could get from those mirrors?
Thanks!
Rick
Hi Ryan,
10 mm beam diameter. And it is more square than round at the scanner aperture.
Thanks!
Rick
I've pretty much had it with Pangolin bullying their competitors on an internet forum. What company anywhere else does that? Anyone who has the skill level to build a projector knows scanner spillage isn't the end of the world.
We get it, your data is more accurate. We get it, their data is not. Marketing is marketing. If they stole your patented design or something, just get to the point, if not and if you genuinely just want to help post your diagrams showing the spillage amount and move on.
In the end if it works for us the consumers, it works. We are not mechanical engineers here building highly accurate scientific machinery, most of us couldn't care less about the low level technical info. We need something that gets the job done and move on to our next project and frankly DT, PT, Goldenstar, IM get the job done while Pangolin asks for the same cost of the scanners for the scanner amps to be calibrated by another company and only then shipped to you. It's been years now, how about finally offering a complete scanner+amp kit already instead of wasting time criticizing competitors?
This is coming from someone who has used 506 and other of your products.
Honestly, it feels like Steve Jobs is complaining in an Android forum.
Ill never be able to wrap my head around why I'm always the bad guy for wanting people to post honest specs for their products. Have I ever said a single thing about Cambridge? Nutfield? No, because they make a top notch product, and spec it fairly and honestly. That's all I ask of manufacturers.
You're not in our office every day when we receive 3 to 5 calls a day from people calling and complaining Quickshow isn't working right. We Ask what's wrong? They say the image is flickering and the FB3 must be bad. Nope, just another cheap Chinese laser. "But it must be the Quickshow the seller told me it can do 50k". Yeah, at 2 degrees... Maybe. Or you just downright got lied to.
I'll never claim that we or our products are perfect. But I'll always continue to stand up for the industry I work in every day as I have passion for it, and demand accurate specs and advertising.
Maybe I will add a disclaimer to all of my posts..
.
THE OPINIONS EXPRESSED ARE MINE AND NOT THOSE OF MY EMPLOYER
As for complete scanner and amp kit, anyone considered the idea that we have our own reasons for not wanting to offer one at this time? Literally... Every single scanner that leaves our office is bought and paid for before it is even made, operating at 100% capacity (maybe more). This is without a C506 driver! We don't need a driver to sell more of these things than we can make! And literally thousands ship every month... Something like 2000pcs are expected to ship this month, without a driver.
The Saturn series of course comes with a complete turnkey solution. However, our production line has been completed bought and paid for by a few companies. (80 percent of Saturns are used industrially and not in laser light shows). So, they're not being offered to the general public as a system right now. Best and fastest way to get your hands on one is buy a Kvant projector with them already built in and tuned and ready to go :)
Anyways, done highjacking. To the OP, please just post accurate specs about what the scanners can really do. No need to exaggerate or tell part truths - people will still buy the scanners. If you need help with this, please let me know, I would be more than willing to assist, and on my own time too. To Rick, I will mock that scenario up tomorrow.
I swear some of y'all though... If you bought and paid for a 2000 sq foot house and the builder only built 1500, you would say "oh who really needs that space we paid for anyways"
Buy a V8 truck and the dealer gives you a V6... Who needs those two cylinders anyways.
Buy a TV that says 50" on the box and you open it and it's 42”... Who needs those extra inches anyways?.... I'll leave that one open ;)
Buy a bag of chips and you open it and it's half full of air... Ok bad example that happens every day
Buy get my point? Why's it so OK if scanner companies do it? If Pangolin did it we would have people chase us out of town with torches and pitchforks...
Moving forward, my 3mm aperture mirror set is now 5mm. 5mm is now 8mm. And my 10mm is now 15mm. Oh and all at 85 degrees too. Spillage isn't the end of the world.
THE COMMENTS AND OPINIONS ABOVE ARE MY OWN AND NOT THAT OF MY EMPLOYER
And again, this is a public forum, for you know, discussing things. I still haven't located the rule that says I can only post praise. Reviews can be positive or negative, and everything I have said is based in fact.
Anyways, to be supportive of competitors (which we generally are! Spoke with two other galvo companies today purchasing and exchanging components), I'd be more than happy to purchase a set. Where can I send the PO and Payment? Haven't decided which I want, probably the DT50W system
THE COMMENTS AND OPINIONS ABOVE ARE MINE AND NOT THOSE OF MY EMPLOYER
Because it's a bad analogy. I don't know why I have to explain this again, but some beam spill is not an issue for most, beam being weaker because of this on the edges of the projection is acceptable for most.
A better analogy would be "megapixels" in phones. I don't see iphone bashing samsung publicly claiming megapixels by themselves don't mean shit. Sure, they don't, most consumers don't give a shit though.
I didn't say you are breaking rules. Being disrespectful is not illegal, it's still bloody annoying though.
Well it tells something when it's not the first time you're being criticized for this behavior. First of all, don't make so many posts, it's called spamming. You don't need to do that to make a single point or just get info. Even above, you could edit your post and add more info, not make another one.
When potential buyers see so much spam and little actually non-technical info they lose interest in searching for actually useful posts , they lose interest in reading more about the product which the seller made this thread for. Intentional or not, it's hurting them.
Secondly, sarcastic posts such as "good luck with the sales" is extremely disrespectful and obnoxious. Don't pretend it wasn't sarcastic.
Oh boo hoo, everyone has inexperienced customers calling them every day, so do I. That doesn't give you right to come here and do this.Quote:

Can't edit posts on android, tried it, hence three posts. At least on my cheap Amazon phone.
Also not too worried about being criticized for demanding accurate specs.
As for doing something else productive, just currently taking a break between coats of paint in my bedroom :)
You missed my point about inexperienced customers. The problem is they're being lied to, and then improperly placing blame on Pangolin for their issues. If manufacturers posted honest specs, this wouldn't be a problem... also didn't know there are "rights" as to what can and can't be said
I even offered to buy a set
Anyways if this talk is too inappropriate for the forum as implied, please feel free to give a call tomorrow and we can discuss via voice. I'm on an early schedule right now, and will be in the office from 3am to 2pm eastern time or so tomorrow...
Again can't edit posts but replying to your now edited post
"Beam spill not an issue for most"
Why not just say the diameter of the beam it can move and the applicable angle range. Can also say "galvos can scan wider and larger beam with losses". That would be honest. His mirror set will do an honest 5mm beam through approximately 40 degrees. If he had said, "5mm beam 40 degrees, galvo can scan wider with beam spillage” I would literally have zero issues and likely never have even commented. In fact I likely would have said "thanks for the honest specs and good luck with the sales".
Never said anything about the scanner either, or speed. The DT series is a decent scanner. Mirror specs is just what has me irked.
Just. Be. Honest.
Saying 5mm beam 85 degrees is deceptive as hell and everyone knows it.
THE COMMENTS AND OPINIONS ABOVE ARE MINE AND NOT THOSE OF MY EMPLOYER
Because... of... MARKETING. God dammit man, is one time not enough for you? Get every company to be honest like that (which they won't, because of, well, marketing) then you can demand that from one company. You're literally like if one cellphone company all of a sudden started blaming and demanding other cellhpone manufacturing companies to not abuse the "megapixel" thing.
No, I didn't miss the point, but you can't say because an inexperienced customer blames you for someone else's product then you have the right to do this to that someone. Now, if that someone was the one telling the inexperienced user that their issues was because of your product that would be a different story.
And by the way, if someone doesn't understand enough about how scanners work to get this I wonder how they are even trusted to operate a eye and fire hazard which is a laser projector to use your software and call you in the first place.
Let's see, "you're a fucking retard". Just an example of something I don't have a right to tell you. Obviously you know the difference between moral rights and rights in the legal defintion/sense. Again, not breaking any rules doesn't make you less annoying.
Lying is OK as long as it is for marketing purposes only... Gotcha. I understand now.
THE COMMENTS AND OPINIONS ABOVE ARE MINE AND NOT THOSE OF MY EMPLOYER
i know rms0504 and i'm confident of his math and his mechanical engineering chops. as far as i'm concerned he's providing science and fact. not marketing bs.
i've called out other vendors for their claims (including pangolin). we need fact checking. we need to keep vendors honest. all of them. beam clipping may not matter to some, but it does matter to me and is absolutely something i would take into account when buying a set of galvos.
jian's updated galvos look worthy and i have totally abused my set of dt40w's and they're still going strong after many years. i wish him great success as his galvos are the best i've seen come out of china.
Not what I said. What I'm saying is you can't come here and do all this because someone is technically "lying". My point is everyone is. Except you, good for you, point it out all you want but don't attack, ridicule and advertise your own shit, it doesn't justify all that, is what I'm saying.
Thanks.
DT40W X=5*10,Y=5*16(0.8mm thick) for 3mm beam, but people always grumble the mirrors to small.
DT50W X=8.5*8.5,Y=7*17(1mm thick) for 5mm beam, all mirrors are bigger and heavy, that is working fine.
We don't need COUNT only,we need UE ( user experience ) is good.
To someone:
We are DT50 speed still same DT40,but lower heat.We call it DT50 because the galvo be able to working 50K when we finished a double LM3886 driver for that.
When customer ask me:is that DT50 working 50k? I will tell them the fact.
NO lying.
Jian, I think he takes issue mainly with you mentioning some max scanning angle without mentioning there will be x amount of overspill, not you naming the scanners like this.
I don't have an issue with you naming these DT50 myself. I didn't have an issue with Xbox naming one of its consoles 360 to look bigger than "Playstation 3" and I don't have much issue with literally everyone making memory storages having less than 2,4,8,16,32,etc. GB of actual usable memory... or Pangolin naming their scanner "506", for that matter. Biggest number of them, good marketing, I take no issue. Yes, I know there's a reason behind that number, Microsoft said the same about "Xbox 360", spare us the explanation.
I agree that all vendors should be held to a higher standard around here, and anyone called out on questionable claims. I fully expect anything I post to be held to a higher standard and level of scrutiny.
I just dont understand why I don't have the 'right' to comment on others claims... simply because of my employment. It is up to everyone to keep each other honest
I've noticed on other pages for another industry i am deeply involved in, many people tend to dislike any time representatives of the large company post, and they continually get "shit on" until they leave and no longer contribute to the community. Then everyone wonders where they went. Good case in point - My second job, I work for Monster Jam Monster Truck shows. This past weekend, one of our drivers pulled off the first ever "front flip" in competition and immediately the speculation came out with whether or not it was intentional or luck or a combination.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxOViZm3ih8
After a few days of this, the driver chimed in saying he knew what he wasw attempting and had been waiting for the opportuniry for a while. He was instantly shit on, called a liar, told he didnt know what he was doing, that it was all luck, etc. And people wonder why our drivers and other employees rarely come out of the shadows to interact with fans... Anyone noticed BB hasn't posted at ALL this year? I wonder why...
I have nowhere mentioned our own offerings until being called out on not offering a turnkey solution, to which i replied that a solution is available... yet then I am called out on plugging and marketing. Please show me where I am "advertising my own shit"

THanks Chris for the kind words. I just want everyone to be kept honest, to keep a level playing field for everyone. Lets let the consumer decide if beam clipping is important or not, rather than the manufactuer deciding for us

Jian, I have no problem with your scanner. I haven't commented on the speed (because I dont have any, though I am more than willing to purchase some at full price...), but your speed claims are typically accurate, and actually appreciate your comment
Yes, angle and content (waveform and such) and heat removal ability plays a huge part in speed. It is very hard to just throw a number out there.Quote:
There is no a standard answer this question.
What the speed at full angle? That depend on your shows and graph.

Also have no problem with the naming convention
The only issue I have is with the mirror sizing. If you need the help, I would be happy to characterize your mirror sets for you and let you know what they really can and can not do, on my own time, for free. Your 5mm mirror set is a very good mirror set for a 40 degree angle. I would have no issues if it was advertised as "5mm 40 degrees, can scan up to 85 degrees with spilling". That would be a very honest claim which nobody would have any problems with.
If it would be helpful, I can send you a free copy of our book on Laser Scanning, which there is a large section on mirror sizing. Please let me know if this is interesting to you.

I've seen your "spare me the explanation" comment a few times and have learned it is synonomous with "I'm going to spew some BS and don't want to be called on it".
I dont really care too much whether or not you want an explanation, but since you have yet again called us out on something with literally no basis in fact, you can ignore the rest of this post and I will explain for everybody else listening :D
The VRAD 1510 actuator is named for its physical dimensions. 1.5" Wide. 1.0" Tall, hence VRAD 1510.
The VRAD 516 is named for its physical dimensions. .5" Diameter (wide), 1.6" hip to front face.
The VRAD 506 is named for its physical dimensions. .5" Diameter (wide), 0.6" hip to front face.
Want to take a wild guess where the Compact 506 name comes from? XD :)
I don't see other companies jumping into every thread about Pangolin scanners and asking where their drivers are and why they are so slow to deliver them. But they could.
John, if you need drivers, please give me a call at the office and I will be happy to discuss. Not going to advertise on Jian's thread. However I have three different models of C506 drivers in stock right now which can be delivered with scanners rather quickly. We're just not advertising this right now.
Rick, See the two screenshots below, this is the DT50BB mirror set with a 10mm Beam, at 40 degrees optical
Attachment 51939
Attachment 51940
HOWEVER, In fairness to Jian, he DID say this mirror set is for 7mm-8mm. Screenshots of 7mm beam at 40 optical below. X mirror completely captures the beam, Y mirror has some slight loss at max angle. HOWEVER, I did not include a crash margin. Jian's system may perform better if he has the scanners closer together, and utilizes a stopping pin to prevent crashing. I did not see a stopping pin in his pictures, so I assumed the mirrors do not have a crash margin. If they are actually closer together, they will likely perform better.
Attachment 51941
Attachment 51942
Please note I did not take the chamfers out of the corners of the mirrors like the real mirrors have (See website pictures). I don't have dimensions for those, and it would be unfair to Jian for me to represent them potentially inaccurately, so spillage may be slightly worse than shown. However, you can kind of overlay those chamfers in your head and decide for yourself. For the 7mm system, I dont think it would be an issue.
EDIT (now that I am on a PC...): Please excuse my use of Saturn 9 scanners rather than taking the time to model the DT50. This was the closest working model I had available which does not include an X set back which i was able to adjust quickly for use in this thread
I am not going to repeat myself. Go read my previous post, it's not about merely commenting.
The solution is not turnkey though. I don't care why you don't, I don't care what options there are and I certainly don't care how great your company is for working with other corporations, bottom line is I can't just press a button, buy and get a scanner and amp from you while I can from DT and everyone else.Quote:

Thanks Ryan for providing the info. Jian's DT50BB scanners and board are arriving here tomorrow. I'll be putting it into one of my high power rigs over the weekend. I have a function generator and oscope and Cambridge's manual on tuning for reference. ( Jian, do you have test points for your board, specifically the position sensor?) We will see how they stack up vs Pangolin's 506's 10mm aperture scanners with Laser Fantasy boards. I also have a 6210H with the same size mirrors to compare. I must admit Jian has been great to work with, fast shipping, and if they work the same or better than the 506's, the price point will be hard to beat.
Thanks and please let us know the results of your test, we all look forward to hearing the results. The inertia of the Y mirror you will receive is approximately 0.036 g*cm^2, assuming glass substrate. The inertia of the 10mm Y mirror on your C506 is 0.180 g*cm^2, so literally five time the inertia of the mirror you will receive tomorrow. Regardless, I look forward to seeing how they stack up! Will you have the capacity to do a side by side comparison of all three scansets?
Glad to hear Jian has been good to work with!
THE COMMENTS AND OPINIONS ABOVE ARE MINE AND NOT THOSE OF MY EMPLOYER
Hi Ryan,
So yes, I will able to do a side by side comparison of the 506's and Jian's DT50BB rather quickly. The comparison between DT50BB and the 6210H will have to wait as I'm still building that rig that will be put into my 8 foot laser robot (Gort)--although, I could borrow one of Andrew's rigs that has a working 6210H scanset next weekend (I just tuned that laser for him, so he owe me one)--or just go over to his shop (about 3 miles from my house) and compare Jian's scanner with all of his rigs--he has a lot of Lightspace rigs, probably not a great comparison as the mirrors sizes are different.
Ryan was just being honest with the specs.. I dont like the confusion which fools many newcomers and alike in this industry. It's not company bullying.. it's getting rid of the BS.. nobody wants to do it and when someone does it he gets guilted into "bullying a company" even though they are some of the most qualified people to talk and comment about the technical details of this kind of equipment.
He isn't saying the product is bad or good value.. The DT50's are considerably larger which adds inertia among other things. The DT40pros are great but they are not perfect! Their resonance is their limiting factor.. the shaft is not stiff enough and flexes causing tiny vibrations after a certain scanspeed which someone says "You should not complain about" but remember this a product also catering to professionals and these problems get worse and worse with distance and affects people like me who send content to clients who might be confused about specs which results in me having to spend a lot of time to guide them to get rid of this confusion and resolve the problems they have!.. in older versions of the DT40 this was worse.
Jian is a great guy as well and for scanners coming from china he makes some of the best galvos!
