Wireless Laser Control - improving reliabilty / safety

The a couple of peopl on here who have amzingly , wonderfully made the wheel for us all and shown how laser projction can be done wirelessly on the cheap ! ( in theory under £150-£100 )

Yes for commercial projects this is a big no no for insurance and safety concerns but im hoping a few of you can chuck in ideas to me developing my own wireless kit with improved reliabilty , and therefore safety .

One of the biggest concerns i can see from what i have read is the 2.4ghz frequency , due to the amount of other kit sharing that frequency a priority should be getting OFF that frequency !

Im guessing changing the frequency should be matter of desoldering and replacing a chip in the wireless router and print server / usb extender. I would imagine changing the frequency of a wireless laptop could b harder , anyone ever opened a Wireless USB stick , do they look easy enough to chage chip ?

...im a looking for disscussion on the theory of this and also , more importantly what frequency we could be safely moved to ......

A) is there a bank of frequecies going spare we could be allowed to use
b) is there a frequency that can be used that will as part of its nature extend the range comfortably
c)where can frequency chips be purchased

Any thoughts Appreciated

PAUL

These wireless microwave technologies revolve around an antenna and a circuit built for the 2.4 or in your desired instance preferably 5 ghz bands I service laptops. many wireless routers incorporate the mini-pci and express cards used in laptops and were it not for firmware issues this routers could easily have these boards upgraded. You would not ever swap a crystal in these devices but the whole transciever board some do one band or the other or both AKA atheros technology. Try the magazine for electronics experimenters called "NUTS & VOLTS" or online magazine elektor.com A discovery I made may save you heartache many laptop mfg.s in particular HP have done some very nasty doctoring on the boot bios software of thier laptops and you can open the bottom of your laptop and as easily as changing ram can upgrade either one of these type of wifi cards you may have but as the laptop boots it will read the PID product identification code and will not allow the laptop to boot unless the card is one of the few that was approved to be used in thier laptop. They say this is for FCC requirements I say for planned obsolescence very very nasty, it piseed me off so bad I went in and downloaded the BIOS got an editor located the pid for the approved wifi cards and edited one to my own hi power cards. SCREW HP They sold me a 64 bit laptop which never had drivers released for running 64 bit windows for over 2 years after I bought it I did the same thing I stole acer UK drivers and inserted the pids from my laptops same hardware devices but which had different PID's and viola screw HP the bastards!!!!!!! Anyway there are no crystals to change just whole boards.

There may be some frequencies opening up in the USA and maybe other countries as TV moves from analog broadcasts to digital at a new higher bandwidth, well maybe still in the uhf band?

Ok theres a few "ham Radio " and CB radio forums going about i will sign up for a couple and ak if anyone has any opinion on good safe , frequencies to move to.

Further its a chicken / egg situation ......... i could spend weeks debating th correct fequency to move to only to find a chip for that frequency is not obtainable or very expensive .

It may be better to trace
A) what frequency boards are available
B) the pricing of those boards
C) the dimensions and suitability/ compatibility of the kit its to be swapped with

May be better working it thru that way ..anybody any thoughts on where a wide selection of frequency chips / boards / crystals may be browsed and purchased ?

Try sending a PM to Andyf97 on this forum. He's done lots of wireless networking with the QM2000.Net cards.

The solution he uses is to use VERY powerful and robust transmitters that basically obliterate any interference on the frequency.

I haven't got access to my PC at the moment otherwise i'd send you the links to the gear. It's mega stuff, but it doesn't come cheap!

Cheers

Jem

his system costs about £2000 he said just for fb3 wireless

ouch
! I could get some major hardware for what is that about $4000 usd

when i get home from work and get on MSN ill show him this threadand get him to respond.

unless he sees it before that

I have seen some very nifty repeter type dac that are used in the oil pipeline industry they do analylis on pressure flow etc from some type sensor they are coolas each unit is designed to pass data on to the next transciever in the chain this might have some great usage in this type application

RADIO CONTROL OF LASERS IS A BAD IDEA!

The FCC is no longer ran by engineers, hasnt since President Clinton. It is now ran by lawyers who are only interested in selling off chunks of spectrum
So you will find a deaf ear to your needs in DC. Its the same in any contry, because the IARU treaties specify what channels can be used for what, in each of the 3 IARU regions, entertainment and industrial control are not big fish in the scheme of things, so there are very few channels allocated to them. This only gets changed about every 10 years, so the regulatory guys are always well behind updating to match available technology.

here it goes, after many years of operating licensed wireless mikes, ham radio, and having a business band channel for my family

The oil pipelines have a industry allocated frequency band for that, with co-ordination, otherwise they run 902 mhz spread spectrum and pray somebody doesnt set up with the same serial number, which sets the spreading sequence. They also have to "eat" interference from military radar in that band. Their system can retry sending packets until they get a "ack" back for the receiver. they are also in no hurry, if it takes them 1 second to retomely change a valve and verify a valid command, its not that critical,

One, if your in the states, forget it, CDRH is NOT gonna let you run wireless for shutter control, and certainly NOT in Arizona (ask me how I know). I wouldnt anyways, too much risk unless your actively verifying a two way link every millisecond and have a watchdog on the RF. PLASA (the co ordinating authority for theatrical entertainment electronics specifically disallows radio links for pyro and laser, so your insurance has grounds not to cover you)

Two the only way to get a clean frequency with no chance of jam is to get a co-ordinated
business license from the FCC or the UK radio authority (changes it name once a week)
In the US, you verify legal status, file for the license and pay a co-ordination fee to a private company that co-oridnates for that industry. They take a look at the channel registry and see what has little traffic in your area of operation. Ie you have to define a 30-50 mile radius around a specific area with GPS coordinates and you oten need to supply them a HAAT map, ie height above average terrain plus antenna gains and predicted coverage pattern. NOTE I said little traffic, NOT zero traffic, because all of the national clear channel frequencies were allocated to utilities or sold to private industry long ago. So you might end up sharing with 5 to 500 other users within 100 miles, and most of them will be using high power voice or multicast from multiple transmit sites.
So you must have a secure antijam technology. toime domain diversity Spread spectrum comes close, but 2.4 ghz ISM (industrial scientific and medical) shares its band with microwave ovens and military radar and ham radio, in fact 2.4 ghz wireless, is required to tolerate interfernece, ie you have to take whatever splatter the 3 higher ranking services in that band put out.
Same for 5.6 ghz, 902-928 etc.

a Biz band license is gonna be 75$ a year plus 150-300$ for the inital co ordination fee.

A two way "itinerent" microwave license (basically what you need) is gonna be about 1500$
to set up, not counting the cost of the gear, and itinerant (meaning NOT fixed in one place)
channels are pretty much filled with users as FCC and other radio authorities around the world reassign spectrum to big companies with lobbyists and $$$$.

You WILL NOT be allowed to build your own gear, you must use "type approved" commercial gear that is FCC approved to ensure you do not accidently radiate on some other critical serivces (like fire, or aviation) frequency.

YOu have little or no enforcement if somebody illegally "camps out" on your allocated frequecy either. FCC doesnt spend any time on enforcement any more, unless its related to national security, big cellular company, aircraft or law enforcement channels getting jammed or used illegally. However, lets assume you get a shared channel assignment in the enertainment band (155 mhz, 455 mhz) with channel 3 TV (owned by big companiy) if channel 3 TV complains about your constant laser show carrier mucking up their remote broadcasts, you will get a letter of noncompliance from the FCC and a notice of apperant liability for a fine. You then have 30 days to prove you didnt goof up in writing, and it doesnt go to court, by accepting the terms of your license, you agree you can be fined for a whoopsis without due process.

As for the "freed up" TV spectrum, none of it has been allocated to land-mobile, remote control, or FRS-CB-GMRS type services. It was sold to AT&T and Sprint for extra cell sites, mobile wireless movies on demand, a wireless form of digital cable TV, a probably unworkable national dispatching system for fire, and law enforcement, and homeland security.Spectrum is now sold at auction in the US, against several international treaties and the communciations act of 1932.
we little guys get it taken away, not given to us like in the old days. The only cities getting additional mobile radio channels not sold as a block in auction from TV are LA, DC, and possibly chicago. LA has had 450 to 512 mhz TV allocated to it for years to aid in spectrum congestion. Homeland security got the rest, and much of that went to private contractors to "SELL" dispatching servies to local government. No I'm not kidding, if your big city doesnt have enough channels, they are now supposed to have a option of buying the service from a nationwide contractor at $$$$$$$ per year.

You cannot legally use ham radio or CB for remote control of anything other then other ham radio gear, model aircraft, model cars , model boats etc.....And the hams have about 25 narrow assigned channels for RC, all shared with long distance voice. Only model aircraft have assigned non shared clear channels, for obvious reasons.

So to the best of my knowledge, ther eis nO two way real time talkback RC allocated to anything other then the military, the railroads, utilities and industrial cranes, and aviation services.

God knows what service the FCC would assign you to. licensed and co-ordinated Wireless mic/broadcast support/entertainment channels in the US are pretty much filled up.

You asked, now you know.

Unfortunately it’s just not that simple for several reasons (and the fact that you haven’t detailed what you’re connecting to or want you want to transmit, i.e connect to a QM2000.net box or transmit the analogue signals to the scan amps via wireless so I’ll assume networking to a laptop or QM2000.net)

To start with you can’t just simply swap out the chipset from a 2.4Ghz device and swap with some other frequency, it just doesn’t work that way. Changing to another frequency will require you to change the antenna to suit for one, and most chipset are not pin for pin compatible not to mention the additional/different components (crystals, capacitors, resistors, etc) required for the new chip. Then (for an Ethernet type device) you have the protocol stack and drivers you then need to modify

The other unfortunate thing about wireless is that for most countries around the world you can’t just pick a frequency, as most are reserved for licence spectrum holders, that is companies or organisation that spend a lot of money buying up radio spectrum to be used for transmitting public broadcasts or private links (TV, Mobile phone carriers, microwave links, and so on) and will spend a lot of money protecting their investment (or should I say a lot of your money) so we non-paying users of wireless are stuck with frequencies that are assigned to the ISM band (industrial, scientific and medical)
The ISM band is a set of frequencies initially reserved for use for research and such but was later opened up for public use and as such has no licensing and no regulation so anyone can use it, this is where the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands fall that every man and his dog uses for everything from wireless baby monitors through to you wireless Ethernet connection on your laptop.
Check out Wikipedia for the frequencies - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISM_band

There are also other issues with changing the frequency, and typically it works in the manner of: the higher the frequency the higher the bandwidth and low signal distance (and won’t propagate through as much) or the lower the frequency the lower the bandwidth but will have a higher signal distance (and will be able to propagate through more), the other thing with the selection of 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz frequencies is that the signal coverage is limited and therefore minimises interference from a neighbouring access point.

The 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands also give a good ratio of bandwidth to coverage and is therefore used for wireless networking and depending on what part of the world you live in you will have access to multiple channels within the two frequencies to use (for example in Australia the 2.4Ghz band has eleven channels and the 5Ghz has eighteen channels in total)

So, from all this you’re best bet is to either be selective in picking a less congested 2.4Ghz channel when you set up in a location or start using the 5Ghz spectrum (that can still be susceptible to interference from other things like radar!)

Most laptops these days have a dual band card that will allow you to specify to only use the 5Ghz radio, the all you need is a dual band access point and then when you laptop connects it will only connect to the access point using the 5Ghz radio.

One other thing when buying an access point especially when you worried about reliability is to buy a decent brand as you will be able to configure things like Quality of Service, stronger security, channel selection and may provide you the ability to debug the airspace around itself when thing don’t want to play happily together.

There are other radio devices out there but these will also be based on the ISM spectrum bands as well and will be susceptible to the same issues and interference (although maybe not as much)

Troy

P.S. This maybe a stupid question but has anyone thought of using a laser based data link?
These are now capable of doing gigabit links so a 100Mb one should be cheaper, although still expensive in the scheme of things (but it does contain a laser!)

how does the qm2000 wireless work???

Dear Loope, do you know if the gunplexxer microwave band used by radar and security alarm motion detectors using doppler is still open to experimenter usage. I remember years ago when you could buy horn kits for these and do amazing line of sight communications with these I had some project that I completed out of an old ARRL handbook years ago it was good for 20 miles if you had a vantage point to link from.

10 ghz to 10.5 ghz is still ham, but 10.5 ghz ISM door openers are going away soon.
A gunnplexer drifts as much as 5 mhz a minute and I have the uWave counter to prove it, you want to use that for a laser control? 10 ghz is now gonna be crudded up with ultra wide band ultra short range one way links in the states, for things like mice . While we regularly get 30-50 miles on 10.368, it isnt easy and you need to phase lock the gunn diode to something, usualy a 106 mhz subharmonic. I do that too.

Hi Frank_1257

To be honest I have no idea, I only play with wireless in the space of networking (and technologies based on it like location tracking)

I think Mixedgas has probably answered your question though.

I think you'll find the "qm2000 wireless" is a solution comprising of a QM2000 board, a QM2000.net adapter and a 802.11a/b/g/n wireless device (access point, workgroup bridge) connected to the ethernet port of the QM2000.net board

so it uses normal wi-fi wireless then?

Dear mixedgas, thankyou for your reply In my day when i played with these we had a historically protected house here in Austin, Texas that was 3 stories very old and it was being used for satanic rituals by punk kids an old Jewish guy I knew who owned the house, paid me to hook up a set of these and a solar panel for an audio listen in alarm to notify him of vandals it took me a few months to get off ground but worked well. The gunnplexers were cheap, but the high gain horns were not. It just so happened the house was on a huge hill and the guys home was on another hill so it worked really well.

Do you know anything about usage of an old coherent rf modulator input interferiometer I picked up I tried some audio input for grins and aimed a hene laser though the stainless steel optical aperture I believe that it has some type of piezo in it. I did get demodulated audio from an audio listener magic ear with a miles military army war games target silicon photdiode connected. I know it was not designed for this a physics professor at ut austin told me that it was intended to be modulated at 10's of mhz he did not get into intended usage. last but not least does anyone out there know much about a spectra physics laser pumped head model number VSE 0135-3854 ?

Thanks in advance for any info it was produced last year.

Also does anyone know if laserscope gemini shutters are water cooled or not ?

Yes. You supply and configure the wireles adapter and connect it to the ethernet port of the QM2000.net.

This then become the transparent link between the PC and the QM2000.

Pangolin's forums have details for doing this and I think it's also in a threat on this forum somewhere.

so if the QM uses a wireless router why cantwe?

SO far it sounds like .....

a) getting frequency allocated would be impossible

b) obtaining a chip to change frequency that would swap out or require minimal soldering would be hard to impossible

c) Qm wireless uses 2.4ghz ( stand to be corrected on this ) so its maybe not as much of a no-go as I imagined ?

So lets say i concentrate on staying on 2.4 , one way i imagine to make it safer is to increase Signal power .. kind of blasting the information thru so it has less chance of being interuppted ....that can be done on routers quite easy ... out on the net theres some software hacks to increase power therefore range ( apprently all BT routers are capable of 7 times power output they are set at, but are turned down by software to meet Uk specs ) .
HOWEVER at the laptop end either with built in WIFI or with added dongle i have never read or heard or an extra power dongle or a way or increasing power level.

I would also imagine its a one way street ? as regards information flow ..i cant imagine the routers sending much information back .. i would imagine its all one way TO the router/laser so i imagine its mainly the laptop/dongle that really needs the power increased.

Also just thinking is there ANY countries that DONT use 2.4 ghz for their routers ? ..maybe japan ( as a random example ) uses 2.7ghz and it might be a lot easier to simply buy in routers on a different frequency than try and mod existing ones , providing the frequency i not critical in the country you plan to use

first
use a war driving program to analyse channel use in your area, most people leave their lans on the default channel. or get one of those 45$ usb channel analysers.

There is one trick to "blasting" away. Dont increase the power, increase the directivity.
make it laserlike.

Ie a log periodic or yagi antenna, this drastically improves signal to noise and locks out sources not in your beampath.

two candidates so you dont get ripped off on ebay junk. Both sell to ham radio
keep the coax short and use a microwave coax cable, I can help you find a low loss coax.
watch the solder joints, keep the braid on as close to the joint as possible, and DONT splice them. Pasternack and other coax places sell the wierd connectors the FCC mandates to prevent antenna changes, or just go inside the case and skip the connectors.

WA5JVB, kent brittain, KENT ELECTRONICS, you want a YAGI, not his broadband log periodic. a Whopping 5$ and he has 900 in stock. you'd need some type 141 coax thats low loss at 2400, designed for ham use, so it covers both sides of the LAN band. keep the coax short short short, its lossey.

http://www.wa5vjb.com/products2.html
http://www.wa5vjb.com/prices.html

more gain: like too much. You could detect that signal ~10- 20 miles with this one.
MFJ Enterprises

http://www.radioworld.co.uk/~radio/c...1g-p-4727.html

Or go wokking away from this mess (sorry, could'nt resist thepun)

http://www.usbwifi.orconhosting.net.nz/

for the record, you run the risk of ticking off your national radio authority for doing this, but its not like they go around war driving on laser show nights unless there is a complaint. I like my ham license, although I rarely use it, so I disavow encouraging you to do the the MFJ 15 dbi one. I would not care much about the yagi pcb antenna though for indoors use.

3 dbi = 2x gain 10 dbi = gain of 10 so 15 dbi (decimals are a log function ) is approx a signal directivity gain of 20 , whooohooo, virtual amplification of power!

or go optical, a led, a photodetector and two fresnel lenses. they (those nutters who experiment with this) get ~5 miles with a red luxeon and a fresnel, and a pmt some times.

The QM doesn't contain wireless at all, YOU supply the wireless adapter and attach it to the QM2000.net therefore YOU can connect whatever wireless device you like to it as long it supports Ethernet.

All of these countries use 2.4Ghz and/or 5Ghz, the two spectrums are pretty much standard around the world for compatibility, with the only exception being the quantity of channels in use in each spectrum.

This link give a summary of channels and power settings allowed for different regions:- http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wire.../winapdkh.html

"increase Signal power" isn't the smartest way to increase reliability as all you do is create multipath issues (among other things) that result in dropped packets and packet retries. This would be further increased in environments that contain lot of metal structures (like lighting rigs) that the radio waves can bounce off.
Like Mixedgas stated the best way to increase reliability would be to use directional antennas that are aligned properly.

Example. I have a local council which I have installed wireless data links for, these link stretch up to five kilometres and we are getting data rates from 54Mbps down to the 36Mpbs (surprisingly on one of the shorter links) and this isn't by blasting the signal its by using directional YAGI antennas. The council also use one of the links for connection to the DR site where they backup all their data.

One other issue is that blasting the signal is considered illegal in most countries and attract fines, some rather substantial
Most countries have what is called EIRP (Equivalent Isotropic Radiated Power) This EIRP defines the maximum amount of power that is allowed to be transmitted from the radio transmitter.

One thing that we all need to remember when connecting to something like the QM2000.net device is that it's using TCP/IP for it transmission protocol and that in it own right is very resilient for data transfer (just look at how well it works across the internet ), also the I imagine the QM2000.net device would buffer most of the data before being sent onto the QM2000 board.

So the only issue we need to consider is reliability for things like shutter control and emergency shutdown operations not so much the data transfer.

This could be done with something like a car alarm security remote based on 433Mhz (I think) and being coded would mean that it's also secure

You can get VNC for Symbian http://symvnc.sourceforge.net/index.html

awesome, but i dont totally understand what i have to do :(

What part don't you understand?

1. Install a version of VNC on the PC running the QM2000 board and configure.
2. Install the Symbian VNC on the phone
3. configure the wireless access point
4. configure the phone to connect to the access point
5. configure VNC the phone and connect

P.S. This will not work on a QM2000.net solution:(, only on a QM2000 system with a PC

ah so wont work with na fb3 then?

Well it can but you'll need to locate the controlling PC with the projector (connected via USB) and connect an access point to it and then setup VNC to control it by PDA/Phone or another laptop.
You could also use two laptops (with Wireless) and setup an adhoc wireless network with the built in wireless, however I wouldn't recommend it as a reliable solution as adhoc networks don't have the range or security.

pfff seems alot of work and i dont fully understand. ill pass but thanks for trying to explain to me
