Default Build Your Own Space Shuttle!! Free Parts!!

    Hey,
Can someone near Cape Canaveral go and check these out for me and pick them up???

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Here's a recession bargain: the space shuttle. NASA has slashed the price of these 1970s era spaceships from $42 million to $28.8 million apiece.
The shuttles are for sale once they quit flying, supposedly this fall.
When NASA put out the call to museums, schools and others in December 2008, seeking buyers, about 20 expressed interest. NASA spokesman Mike Curie expects more interest, what with the discount.
"We're confident that we'll get other takers," Curie said Friday.
Discovery is already promised to the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum. Atlantis and Endeavour are up for grabs. It's possible that Enterprise, a shuttle prototype that never made it to space, also will be available. Enterprise currently is at the Smithsonian.
Curie said no decisions will be made before summer.
The new lower price is based on NASA's estimate of the cost for transporting a shuttle from Kennedy Space Center to a major U.S. airport, and for displaying it indoors in a climate-controlled building. The travel cost may vary based on location. NASA has moved up the delivery date to the latter half of 2011, instead of 2012.
Potential customers have until Feb. 19 to put in a request.
As for the space shuttle main engines, those are now free. NASA advertised them for $400,000 to $800,000 each in December 2008, but no one expressed interest. So now the engines are available, along with other shuttle artifacts, for the cost of transportation and handling.
    Assembly will be required, however.

    Wink

If I won a fat powerball I'd buy a shuttle and renovate it into a house. Park lake front on a beach like an emergency landing... 5 watt projectors on the end of each wing.

Ditching shuttle without a viable manned replacement is dumb.
Of course the Russians keep using those old spheres....

And for those who dont follow space news, if we dont get a few more new GPS birds up soon......

I'll admit that it would be cool to own a main engine from one of the shuttles, but where the hell would you get the LOX and LH2 you'd need to fire it? (Not to mention the team of a dozen technicians or so needed to ensure that you didn't blow yourself up while test-firing it...)

But yeah, if money were no object, I'd mount one of those bastards on a modified Spirit of America chassis and bring Craig Breedlove out of retirement to smash the land speed record at Bonneville. (Take the title back from those cheeky Brits and their Thrust SSC.)

It would be sad to see shuttle end up like Buran, stored out side, beat to death and then sold to a high bidder. Note, Buran is Shuttleski..
Perhaps might have been a improvement in some ways.

Ahaha I saw that post. I can only envision the shipping costs for the main engine parts. Never mind the cost of the fuel itself. (And the machinery required to safely discharge it to the ignition system.)

... Or the (s)pit of land you don't mind torching when (if) you manage to test fire em.

Nonetheless, would make a great lawn ornament XD
