Default Laser Drive Inc. argon power supply

    Hello everyone!
I have opportunity to buy argon laser PSU - Laser Drive Inc, model 9600. I can't find any info about running it without dedicated controller (something like info about JDSU argon PSUs in Sam's Laser FAQ). Does anyone know this unit and can tell me if it's possible to do anything with it without a controller? I'm unusually interested in this one because it has a socket that my argon laser's plug would fit

That is the controller, and it looks SP261 compatable (ie a clone) The potentiometer is on the front panel.

you jumper a few pins and it works by itself. 261 description is in the FAQ

This laserdrive psu is as far as i know a direct clone of the SP261B psu.

    Default Argon PSU

I have one of these power supplies. All you need to do is place a jumper on pins 36 and 37 (see Sam's FAQ):

Be sure you operate the laser in light feedback mode and not current. I burned-out one of these PSU by running it too long in current mode.

Should not make a difference... If the control loop works...

Plug match might also result with tiny sparks, I think

Thanks guys, that's exactly what I needed to know

Yep, but when it matches then there is at least some possibility that it's compatible (I would not try to run it without checking first, of course). I just checked the SP261's connector in Sam's Laser FAQ and pinout is the same as in my laser's plug so my assumption was right

I had one of those as well. It is a direct match for the SP 261-B exciter. Even the remote connector is wired the same. If you have a 161 head with the 15-pin jones plug (retangular plug), it will plug right in.

Note that the internals of this PSU are slightly different than the SP-261... but the connectors (and the end result) is the same.

I have some National Laser Company head but the plug is the same. I bought this PSU, I'm now waiting for shipping. It's sold as untested but looks like in the picture attached to the first post. I hope it works, we'll see

If the tube is dead, you can pick up a replacement on E-bay for a decent price. The SP-092 tubes drop right in.
