if you want an SMT board to be designed, I can do that, one or two layers

what I like with SMT is the possibility to use the ground planes on the back as heatsinks... just bolt the board to an alu plate with a silpad underneath and you're done

I also like the modular forms... what is nice is to make boards in a row with precut holes so you can separate the board in several groups of drivers with common rails

there are SO8 IC digital pots made by, I can't remembre, microchip or linear, I have some

they are 50K and accept simple pulses as the up/down commands or I²C

but I think it should be added later on, when the design proofs its goodness

I might just be really tired, but it's still confusing to me:
What's the V2? Is it another 12V input or something completely different? -Asking to make sure, since I'm used to IEC standards the first thing i saw was a capacitor but that doesnt really add up with the "V2" tag

Going to make at least one driverboard today before I go home, since I need something better than my fiddly "test if the LD survived desoldering"-drivers to mount in my build

Edit: And what values are the pots?

You want to avoid digi pots, they have chains of effective Rs and Cs inside which act as low pass and band pass and just crumple fast response...
