Adam, you'd need to look at the bore light with the hene supply. Don't remove a whole mirror mount, remove only the mirror. The mirrors have wedge, just a small amount, so note where the top of the mirror was and mark it with a pencil.

If we're sure its just uber high pressure, B. or I could pump it for you.

    Here is the rest:

He did not have the energetic plasma you do, so there are a lot of background noise in his spectra from long exposures.

A transmission grating and a decent digital camera make a decent spectroscope:

Well, I finally gave it another try on the Argon PSU after letting it cook on the HeNe PSU for another 5 days (making it a total of 10 days that it's been run that way). It didn't seem to do much good. It started at 5 amps, which was a plus, but the tube voltage was at 303 volts when it lit! After about 5 minutes, I tried to increase the tube current to around 8 amps, and the tube winked out. Sigh... I guess I could have predicted that.

Steve, I still need to pull the HR mirror out and look at the bright line spectrum. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I see evidence of oxygen or nitrogen, I'm screwed, right? (Basically, if I see any green at all...)

Unhappy Well, it looks like I'm screwed after all...

I decided to take a look down the bore, and I don't like what I see. Steve, have a look and tell me what you think:

Here's the HR end with the optic removed. You can just barely see the plasma glow from the HeNe PSU that is running the tube...

And here's a shot more or less down the bore, taken through a set of cheap diffraction grating glasses. Note that the OC end was blocked off with tape so no light could come down the bore from that end. Thus everything you see is from the plasma alone.

That sure looks like green to me... Which means nitrogen... Which means I have a leak.

    Shit!

Anyone got any more bright ideas?

    Adam

PS: More pictures in my HGM5 gallery, if you want to see the gory details... (Scroll to the bottom to see the pics taken down the bore.)
