I just got done reading the whole laserscope thread with Allen. Oy... IMO, unless you are doing a pro outdoor show (Varienced), NO ONE should need a laser that powerful for a show. Most indoor shows can be done with 5W or less. When I was at MWK, we wroked on an I-90 that was doing about 6 watts. That was so insanely bright, it was almost painful. I am glad that most of us here respect lasers. It is a shame that some don't.

haha thread hijack here, the last time i saw mike at MWK he was leaving my place in Sunnyvale in his corvette with plasma tubes stacked in the back seat. lol

in reference to your mean green beam machine, you are used to looking at the business end of the machine it is a different animal when you open the cover because if you are who you say you are (a urologist) you might have never done that.

forgive me for being a bit skeptical, but if you ask around a bit most people will tell you that I am an A$$. But anyway...I digress...It is very rare (im not saying it couldnt happen, butttttt) when someone who has worked with MWK and grows up out of that industry and becomes a (strike what I wrote in red, it was my bad) urologist and just happens to be in the OR talking to a doctor who casually mentions that he is disposing of a couple of vag burners and you said sure I take them and may be do some light shows on the side, makes me wonder if urology is a very good field to go into... Certainly you could link us to your bio at the hospital that you work at...not that you need to but, it would be an interesting thing...dont ya think???

m just sayin, I mean Im an ass and all, but I have a hard time biting on this fish story PS...I have NEVER EVER heard of a certified urologist, wanting to make a laser CNC in his spare time...now would you like to come clean?

EDIT- I will apologize PROFUSELY should my skepticism be proven wrong, I am an ass, but I am a man of my word.

EDIT again...sorry the urologist did not work for MWK but something isnt adding up. Apologize for confusing the good doctor with absolum7691

Uhhhh, I think you got the wrong guy! I am not a urologist! I work in IT, unless that was not directed at me.

I worked at MWK right until it went under. LOL, Mike Kenny.... that guy lol. Loading plasma tubes in the backseat! lol. That place was so unfit for refurbishing lasers. Particle wood benches, no kind of clean environments to work on lasers. We had a flow bench..... but it was hardly ever used. It was a fun place to work though. He must have had over a hundred 60X heads sitting on the shelves when I was there.

Default Please Accept My Sincerest Apologies

I find it very difficult to type while on my knees. I profusely apologize to the good doctor for my ignorance and slanderous accusations. The taste of crow is not bad if you chew on it long enough.

If Steve vouches for you..I will accept that. Please accept my apologies.

FWIW - a laserscope green laser is the last laser you would want to do CNC machining with. But what ev...

EDIT- typed this while you were posting yours...That would have been some good convenient information to post for your first post instead of what you posted...But I knew you had to be someone other than a laserist undercover...your spelling was impeccable.

We have had a few problems around here and that is why I was skeptical.

    Default Thanks Laserman532

Please no getting down on your knees. I'm just happy that I hope I can call you a friend. Would the ktp/yag run in the the YAG mode (supposedly up to 100 watts) be a better choice or is this all just a pipe-dream and something that needs to be squashed right now.

I understand your skepticism and think that is healthy. I think I mainly reacted to the RED lettering in the post especially since I wasn't sure what it was referring to. I told Steve that I would be happy to send some medical admonishments if needed to help some people see the folly of their ways.

Oh, the spelling bit (spell checking). My wife laughs at me trying to spell. That is not one of my talents.

Default Off topic but thanks Laserman532

In responding to your post and giving you all my links to check me out, I found that my geocaching link for the Prime Factor cache, had a bad database connection. I had not noticed that and no one had told me as most geocachers are scared off by the math involved. Thanks for letting me find and correct the error.

the green is a very high order multimode and will not focus well after beam routing through fiber cables to a flying head or what ever you are trying to work therefore its ability to get a tight focus on the work piece is generally ineffective.

By installing a 2% OC where the HR is now and removing the KTP assembly you should be able to easily achieve 60 to 100 (or more) watts depending on its condition and alignment, how you get that beam routed to the work piece will be the challenge.

Welcome to the forum!...OBTW...I have been having this stinging sensation when I go potty...should I have that checked?

    Cool

    Hey Phil -

Understand your 'reaction', but small-effort to 'sooth the burn' is that Pat may-have been 'trigger-happy', due to recently-surfaced info that 'ProDJ Duncecap', there, recently bought a block of 256 IP addresses, so he could 'ghost' his way back-into Photonlexicon (he was recently 'cluebyfoured', (banned) from here, and rightly-so...) ...and he was 'notorious' for typing on and on and on and on with little to no 'breathers' and just kept typing and typing and barely a period and he nearly always ended every sentence with an 'lol' which you did not do yes, but I think you see where I am going with this right?

(I'm sure you'll get the hang of 'easy-to-read' posts, before long - I did the same-thing when first joined - one giant paragraph ...

Point-is, I opinn that between the 'machine-gun posting-style' and admittedly 'rare-sounding' case of a Doctor wanting to convert one of these, (don't see too-much of that around here...) and asking-for very specific info on operating these (which ProDj, there, was also 'infamous' for...) all may have added-up to Pat's 'suspicions'...

Pat is actually a really great-guy, and an industry Pioneer - in-fact, we have him to thank, really, for much, if not nearly-all, of the innovations and brilliantly engineered designs, that enabled proper-use of KTP lasers making a 'debut' in the light show industry... and for that reason, it must be really irritating (understandably) to see the many 'hacks' (like the ones I pointed-out in that 'Darwin-Award' video) out there... and anything that might even 'seem' like it...

Ie: imagine how you, Doc, would feel if some guy insisted on ramming a stainless rod up his 'hot dog' - you know, the 'piercing-obsessed' folks - and he keeps having problems, and you give him loads and loads of Good Doctor-advice - and he ignores it / argues with you (and everyone else) and keeps up his 'quest' - and then keeps contacting you, after hours, asking for help, when he (it) gets 'stuck' - - and then, maybe someone shows up on a forum, asking about something 'similar'.... you get my drift, right?

Anyhoo, all I'm sayin is there is good-reason for several of us to be on a 'short-fuse' (yes, but maybe not that short.. around here, relative to these systems... that kid seems determined not to 'stop' until he's 'conquered the world' - and illegally / unsafely-so is of little importance to him....

...So, just 'butting my nose-in', to throw some cool-water on the fire...
    peace...
    j

PS - just a bit of 'friendly advice' - I'd not put ANY 'personal info' in posts on this forum, unless you don't mind that it will get cached and indexed all over the inet - this site gets GOBBLED up by the 'engines'... just fyi...
....and armed only with his trusty 21 Zorgawatt KTiOPO4...

    Default Stinging.. not good

I hope this is in jest but.... Stinging can be a sign of a urinary tract infection. In men, typically it starts as a prostate infection (very common, I have had several) that when it gets worse can turn into a UTI (urinary tract infection). Burning (not the laser type) and stinging is in my turf. I do know these things. I'm still learning (from you experts) about the non-medical use for lasers. I'm learning HR (high reflectivity I hope), OC (output coupling I'm praying). Be gentle with me. Treat me as your slightly embarrassing relative who you think might be able to learn useful stuff but not sure how long it will take. I think I might need to review the physics part too after looking at multimode for a while and not grokking it very well. I have see the TEM00 etc. diagrams and I assume that is what you are talking about. Please don't laugh too hard at my ignorance. What I know is that through a very strange series of events, I came into possession of 2 ktp/yag lasers that I know are dangerous. I am smart enough to know that I am an amateur here and don't want to hurt myself or others in my family because of my stupidity. I want to do something fun/interesting and safe. I don't want to make a video of me lighting a joint or cigarette with a freaking laser with no laser glasses... That still kills me after watching it. I think they need to be nominated for the Darwin award.

I am looking for a good book that I can use to get started in dealing with lasers. I know the physics stuff with my background, knowing how it works is fine, but making things work is a different story. Any recommendations? I saw Lasers by A. E. Siegman with pretty good reviews on Amazon but not sure that is what I need.

Thanks for the advice. I think Laserman532 and I have made up. I can understand the concerns here. As for my info being out, It is out anyway if one wants to search a bit but I do agree with you. I probably should have sent a PM to him.
