    BOOK:

    William T. Silfvast

    Laser Fundamentals.

2004 674 pages of chewy, sweet, goodness, each chapter ramps from beginner to postdoc, so you can pull out what you need at your chosen level and he keeps the math to comfortable level, yet there is enough data there to actually design a laser. I hate math, so that speaks volumes.

    The laser text that delivers....

I don't loan out my copy of Silfvast any more, one generally needs a AK or CAR-4 to get it back from the last grad student that has it...

Of course your local library may have Hechts "Laser Guidebook" , kinda lame in parts but a good start...

Also anything recent by Walter Kochener

    ie something like :

Solid-State Laser Engineering. Series: Springer Series in Optical Sciences, Koechner, Walter

Sam's laser FAQ is on line, and free. (I'm a contributer)

And for KTP you need to learn the mirrors RAM, SAM, and LAM, and only God and Dirk J. Kuizenga knows what the abbreviations mean.

Start with the HENE chapter of the FAQ.

Most of these you can find in a decent college or public library, or get them on interlibrary loan.

Yeah, I finally get to teach Steve something...You are aware that I was personally trained by Dirk Kuizengua and Iassic Bass (LLNL Guru) (I was in the right spot at the right time)

    RAM -Relay Arm Mirror
    SAM- Short Arm Mirror
    LAM- Long Arm Mirror

See that wasnt so hard now was it!

    Ok, I just ordered

    William T. Silfvast

    Laser Fundamentals.

from Amazon. I am anxiously awaiting new knowledge. I'll look at Sam's FAQ. I had skimmed over it and saw how vast that archive is.

Thanks everyone. I will slowly try and come up to speed. I assume that RAM, SAM and LAM mirrors are part of the z-fold. Now to try and understand the why of z-fold. Is it because otherwise the laser would be very long. In other words it is a way to fold the beam length into a smaller ( less long ) state? Man I have a bunch to learn.

sort of...but not really, it is commonly called a z-fold but in reality it is called an optical relay. it is way more than a folded long cavity. obtain optical relay patent by kuizengua...start there...
