Default My Latest Plan - Experts please read

OK I am ready to be shot down, but I want to give this a try.

Basically I want to "mix" red green and blue laser light within a large quartz crystal to create a very futuristic room light. The idea is to have the rock suspended in the room with the lasers directed at it from each corner.

    And I an idiot ?

I think it would look really good.

    What do you think ?

    rock = quartz crystal

that might be interesting.... bring your dates into that room....

Or...you can do it on the cheap...Bubble-wrap .. cellophan all wadded up in a ball , hung from a string (works real good..I know)...than theres the ballon in the middle of the bag of glass ...ooopps did I just say that..
Umm , no.... better not try that one with a high powered device..
Not speaking from experience..dont recommend you try it either..
might not like it .. but sometimes ...well you get the picture anyway.

OK I have just ordered a 635nm red.

I have a 50mw green, and a 5 mw green, but no blue yet. To see if it will work I am going to use a blue LED on one facet of the crystal and the 5mw green on another and the 10mw (pot tweak) red on the other. I have a suitable crystal thats about 5 inches long so its either going to work or not.

If the result is positive I must then aquire a cheap blue whats the best bet ?

I will document the experiment and post it here at the weekend (if the reds here by then).

    Goldmagnet,
I dont know any other way to do BLUE cheap other than by Argon.
I had a DPSS blue laser but was not pleased with its performance.
..and , It was only 10mW..
took me forever to build it and was weak compared to the Green and Red mix..
Its gonna take quit a bit of blue to match that 50 red and 10 of green,.
Presently I get about 70mW out of my Argon tube but thats pushing it...
Altho its a new tube and spec'd for the power - it wont last long drawing that much current. so I run it at 50mW.. crank the other colors down to match.
If you are good with electronics you could find a good tube on ebay or from a freind..build the supply...I suggest finding a farely low hours "HEAD" from ebay and a matching supply. Thats how I did my first one..costs ran about 300.00USD total.

I spent some time today experimenting with the rock light idea.

I dug out a fairly pure crystal and started illuminating it with a red laser module.

In this image I am using both red module and just cliping the crystal with green (~35mw). As you can see on the images I am a bit under gunned on the red side, whats the cheapest way to get good high powered diode red, I can't seem to find the right module.

This week I intend to buy a much bigger crystal, about 5 times this size, and hopefully more red power to follow.

I was pretty pleased with the result above, it was nice and bright, and powering off the red module did produce a drop in overall light output even thought you could not see the red in mixed light.

    Nice pictures there Gold...
The K_car and I like the crystals too..we collect them and hit them with the different color lasers to see which ones flourence the best.
We got some of those radioactive green balls off ebay bout a year ago..man do they glow with the green laser.
I've got some that are slivers of pinkish looking ones that glow nice in red.
She can tell you which do the best..I cant remember their names..but quartz does nicely..
When I figure where to store some pix , I will post em...

Ive got some 808 nm lasers comming soon, and I am interested to see how my crystals perform under IR light. Do you and K_car have any experience of how crystals perform under IR ?

Is this any good for my blue ?

I hope to take some more picture soon, I have over a 1000 rocks including many rareities.

Its amazing how much additional red pumps up the dominant green, I can add 30 mw of red and it just looks alot more green...........

    Regards
