    Default MaXYZmodules 60 to 80mW 655nm RED modules

    I thought I would start a thread here on the progress of the RED modules.

    We have built and sold (1) 80mW module ,we are keeping a 95mW prototype unit for now...Its getting the abusement.

    They will be powered in the 50 and 80mW range as I am not sure just how much higher power these can do. But I can say the 50's can do anything from 50 to 70mW and the 80's from 80 to 90mW easy.(different diode) .maybe 100mW.
    EDIT: We are now selling 100mW units exclusively

    We are getting these powers running at the manufactures suggested current rating and a great set of optics.
    The BEAM is very very thin and can be focused to an extremely small spot!!!

    650nm is obtained by running them lower in current , if we push them they run up to 662nm . So we run them at their center wavelength...(except for the ones up on power) .
    These are just straight laser heads with no blanking or power supply...(trying to keep it on the inexpensive side)...
    They will include a built-in current controlled diode driver...cooling is done by the heatsink only.

    EDIT: NOW WITH BLANKING , YES

    Yep...You heard that right...every RED module will include Blanking control..
    We have tested these units on Alphalite Pro ,...
    The off current during blanking will be just on the verge of threshold.

    We will be making (TWO) different models
    One with Blanking or Modulation for LIGHTSHOW and General use.
    and ...
    One without for Holography use...


    All modules will use ACC (Automatic Current Control) ...
    We get excellent stability ( + / _ 2mw )

    Now I must warn everyone ...The beam profile is NOT perfect on the 80 to 100mw units.- as it does have some aberrations in the pattern as seen in the photo....



    This is because we have not included a pinhole filter or anamorphic prisms to make the beam perfect by blocking the strays. This would drive the prices up fast, or. until I can find a cheap source for these..this would require a complete redesign.
    This is a known problem with diodes in this power range and packaging..
    As I am told by the manufacturer..
    But NOT a really a problem because I think it is perfectly acceptable
    as you may not see it anyway when using them for Holography or Laser Light-show use.
    Most of all the power is in the spot..just has some thin lines protruding 180 degrees from either side of the spot.

    The 50 to 70,s however have been looking really nice..And dont exibit this problem as they have a different diode

    The prices of the RED modules are negotiable...

    For now the 80mW units are 245.00 USD including USA priority shipping .

    Hi Lasernerd,
    Glad to meet ya.

    I'd like to, but that would require TEC of the device which I have not attempted yet.
    It should bring the wavelength down a bit..
    But to really bring it down a bunch would be to cool it way down and hemetically seal it to keep the condensation out.

    Maybe this weekend I'll try it and see what happens..

    This is a all new ball park for me..the red frequency that is,,
    I have used Krypton Ion lasers for the red region..
    I am very interested with your units.
    What kind of temperatures are you looking at to bring down the frequency?

    Hi again,
    I love those Kryptons...
    Well...To get the wavelength to drop another 10nm would take a cooling of 30 degrees c lower than we are operating the diode at now..

    This would make it twice as brite...and it would take some work but not a lot.
    to get it this low...A crude peltier controller would work for this application.

    I have a friend in town that has a temp chamber and has done this test..
    The hard part is making the whole assembly "moisture-proof"
    we must keep condensation from forming on the diode facet..
    "that would be bad"...

    I do believe in temp control of the diode to make it happy..thus longer life.
    I can control it now at room temp..and keep it cheap.
    For Holograpfy a better controller would be needed at this very low temp.
    As we must double seal the whole works...expensive

    Well...Its Finished ...A 70mW Red 655nm module
    And its doing very well...Very stable (+/_ 1mW) and the best part is...
    The beam profile on this one is perfect...
    This unit uses a 50mW diode a Panasonic LNCQ05 PS
    You may wonder why it is putting out 70 when it is a 50mW diode...well I
    am running it just under the max current 115ma at 105ma..And this wonderful power comes out!!!

    I decided to not use the built in photodiode as this would make the circuit unstable when using and external blanking circuit.
    Altho a feedback circuit is desired in most circumstances (for Holography use)..It would not in this case...
    This is because the photodiode is a slow detector so when blanking at high speeds it is unknown what could happen to the diode...overcurrent or spikes could damage it...
    So the constant current driver was chosen and worked very well on my external blanker which extinguishes the the diode just at threshold.
