Default PogoPlug USB device sharing over the internet

    Hey Guys,

Woot is showing a product called PogoPlug .

Has anyone used this product or something similar. I am constantly uploading promo mix sets for patrons and friends to download but am getting tired of the time it takes to upload.

I have server space but then again I have to upload it as well. I'm paying a shitload for internet and it is unlimited upload and download so I thought it would be really cool to transfer music to a separate USB mass storage device and let people have at it by posting links to my blog and social networking sites.

Its sounds so easy but wanted to know what people think about PogoPlug or if someone is using another type of similar product? I would love to hear your thoughts and review. Also is it safe since I will attached the ethernet cable to a router and not directly to my computer.

PogoPlug is not "USB device sharing over the internet". PogoPlug is a small server that you can plug USB hard drives into. This is not the same thing.

    I think this will work,

Basically I'm looking for a easy device that I can add dj mix set mp3's for public download. I have a website and data space but don't have the time to keep it up to date nor do I have the knowledge to upload it to the server and create link in dreamworks and post it to my website. I got so frustrated with my website site I changed it to a google blog so that I can add dates and content to it from any computer.

I want to be able to post one link that would send you to one page on the web and download any mix I have on my USB drive. I don't want this to have anything stored on my home computer for people to get into like a FTP. I don't know enough about it to feel like I am being safe from viruses. Plus I would want to password it and it would limit public downloads.

Pogoplug looks like a great idea because it just goes through my internet connection and not through my computer to get to the content on the usb storage device.

I get about 10-30 downloads a week from people visiting a 3rd party site to download my content so I don't think it's going to be a huge amount of upload download drag time.

I was just curious if anyone used Pogoplug and how fast is it for people to download content.

I'm going to give it a try but wanted to know if there was a better product out there similar to Pogoplug that people have tried.

So your plan is to put a server on the internet, on your home connection, with absolutely no security at all?

This will end well, I predict it.

I was assuming since I am only pluggin the Pogo into an internet connection and not to my computer internet connection that I would have no issues with security on my home computer. The only thing anyone would have access to is a USB storage device attached directly to the Pogo. So I'm assuming if there was ever any security issue it would only effect the Pogo and my USB storage device.

They are quoted on their site as:
At Pogoplug, we use best practices from the industry to ensure the security of our users’ data. None of your personal data is stored in our servers other than your email address. All of the data on your drives attached to your Pogoplug remain only on your Pogoplug in your house. While it is being accessed, the data may be forwarded through our servers, but no copies are retained during this process. Removing any or all of the content from access is as simple as unplugging the Pogoplug, the drive, or deleting the file off the drive.
Pogoplug offers fully encrypted access to your files through the HTTPS protocol. This protocol is the same encryption security that your online banking system uses to protect your account access. A link to the secure website is available on the login page if you access my.pogoplug.com from a non-encrypted access, or can be accessed directly by entering https://my.pogoplug.com/ in your browser’s address bar.

Why don't you just use Soundcloud like everyone else?

Yes, they can only access your USB drive directly, however, they could load a very simple virus onto it that spreads from your USB drive onto your computer.

Thanks Guys for your thoughts and sugestions,
Soundcloud is a great idea, its safe and simple. I have thought about them to host content. Right now I am using house-mixes.com as they are free but users have to sign up in order to download. I was just looking for another outlet that would not cost money to run since I am paying for internet and web hosting.

I will most likely just give soundcloud a shot. It has gained a lot of popularity and I like how you can embed your mixes on social network sites.

    Cheers,
    Matt
