In fairness, that's clearly a diffraction grating effect on his face, so the power density is going to be a lot lower.
Still could have been unsafe, but it's not the same as taking a static beam straight from the laser.
As far as 80's videos with lasers in them, this one has got to be my all-time favorite.

Saw one of my first lasershows to that tune in a club in Spain... Safety was obviously no concern there... They had a beam shooting out the top of the club circling over the city, but the highlight of the show was a single beam only just above head height which shot across the room, out an open window where it bounced off a building over the road and back in again... Hmmm, not exactly what we would see today![]()
By the way, the club was called Muff Diver...
