If you watch it long enough you can see salamander kind of animals swimming by thinking WTF??? I saw a couple of them swim into it and disappear into the black abyss. THe white frothy stuff you see is natural gas coming out also. Warning...NO SMOKING!!!

The BP site seems to be a more reliable feed....If you watch it for a month or two...it is very calming and therapeutic...in a fuck the planet up sort of way...

The feed is intermittent this morning, but when it was working it looked to me like the well was spewing drilling mud and not oil for a change. Seems to lend credence to the LA Times' claim that they've actually stopped the leak...

Wait - what? Where did you get this idea from? Has the president been gloating about something for the past month that I've somehow missed? Has he ever claimed that he's been trying to fix it? (And really, what the hell could he do? He's the president, not a damn oil drilling engineer.)

More to the point, how is an ecological tragedy like an oil spill (bad though it may be) ever equatable with the 1500-1700 human lives lost from Katrina? At least with Katrina, Bush could have ordered the National Guard in a bit sooner. Lives were at stake, and the Guard is well-equipped to assist in a situation like that. But the National Guard isn't going to be much use in stopping an oil leak 2 miles under water. (And the Navy isn't any help either, as we don't have submarines that go that deep, nor do we have specialized drilling equipment on our surface ships.)

Dude - get your priorities straight. The Gulf will recover, just as it did after the Ixtoc I well exploded in 1979 and leaked oil at 2 to 6 times the rate of this latest spill for 9 whole months (!) before it was stopped. It's a bad spill, yes. But it's not a Katrina-level disaster by any means.
