    Where can I get a cheap 40v at 170 amp dc supply , Variable would be nice. Or , how the hell can I make one .

    10 to 12 of these will get you 40V @ 320A

    Are they variable and whats the total price. Its important that I have around 35 to 40 volts at 150 to 170 amps. Thanks !

    Put 3 12V car batteries in series.
    The largest you can find.
    That'll get you cheaply 40V @ 170 amps.
    (at least for a little while )

    No current regulation may be a problem, you also need an igniter pulse to start the flow of electrons.

    I'm not sure if the topicstarter wants a 7 kW short-arc ballast or if the ballast requires a low-voltage supply.

    Found it . Im getting a 35.7 kva single phase transformer for 75 bucks !! I think that should do it
