Default CNI 400mw 808 nm Laser pointer - dissapointed

OK I have been waiting for these for some time.

2 x 500 mw 808 nm laser pointers from CNI. They turned up at a friends house today, and our first results are very dissapointing. I think someone here has had the 1064nm version and reported it very impressive (it could have been Spec).

These units seem initally impressive, being able to ignite a chequebook within seconds. BUT the beam divergence is shocking, at 4 metres the beam is about 15cm wide (it starts out at 1mm) !! Focus has no effect.

I think that collimating these "lasers" is impossible because of the large apature laser "pump" diode installed. These are more like big IR torches, and I belive should not be labled "laser pointers".

We have emailed CNI, I will let you know the result.

    Regards

Not liking that divergence! Might be true that after pumping, the beam would be more collimated? Maybe...

    Just a thought,

By the way Gabriel are you sure you signature is big enough on CPF ?

There are still 6 pixels available on the right

I dunno man, I mean.. I was thinking of just making it into a gif that exponentionally increases in size until it EXPLODES out of your screen.

    A message from my friend

I've spoken to CNI, and clarified the situation. The 808nM "pointer" can't be collimated because it uses a large area emitter (much as I guessed, but would be a good idea to say so on the website wouldn't it) They don't seem to know what maximum level is possible when collimation is required.

So I asked about 1064nM, and the situation here is quite different. They can do 100mW (collimated) in a standard pointer package, which I suppose would be good for popping balloons. The bloke I was speaking to was not great at English (better than my Chinese), but I think he said that 200mW is also possible. Then he said they can also do a 300mW version, but I think that is in a different package style and probably costs more. I've requested details and will let you know.

Maybe not collimated but, at least focusable.
That would make it useful to some degree...(Ballon Popper)

you can still excite different types of materials (crystal types I hope)
and see what happends , but ...please be careful.

They are now on the way back to China, and 2 * 1064nm on the way.

I will let you know how they turn out.

I see that there is a big thread on this on CPF.

Yes these "poniters" do burn, but then so does my magnifying glass. In my opinion these are no more better than holding a big IR pump LED in front of a lens.

AVOID, unless suitable for your project.
