Funny, but in all fairness it was more than the minimum amount of force necessary to stop that idiot, specially given the guy's age and the increasing number of taser deaths.

The cop could have just pulled him from that thing in a second, a taser is supposed to be the one step down alternative to a 9mm round but they just get get used as punishment more and more.

I agree that was excessive force, but it wasn't the guys first time. The officer said he had been told before.

If the officer had allowed Steve to just ride away while being commanded to stop, he would have lost credibility (for lack of a better word) for future encounters.

True, and I'm sure he will remember for next time! It's just that that cop was twice Steve's size and could have easily extracted him with one hand, maybe even used mace.

I completely agree. People see "non-lethal weapon" and think, "Ok, it won't harm them permanently so I can use it whenever I want." Wrong! Tasers should be re-classified as "less-lethal weapons", because as history clearly shows, they can (and do) kill people.

So what? The cop's fear of "losing credibility" is exactly what motivates him to use excessive force in this case. As Doc said, it smacks of South Park's *Cartman style* "You will respect my authority!" crap. A good cop isn't worried about his credibility... He's worried about serving the public good.

The cop could have just yanked the key out of the lawnmower. That would have stopped him right there. No need to pull out the taser.

When the taser was first fielded, officers were instructed to draw the weapon as if it were their service revolver, and use it with the same caution and temperance. Sadly, that training has either been forgotten or outright abandoned by many police departments, and the result is an increase in taser deaths.

The outcome of this is that a potentially useful weapon might well be legislated out of use in the future, because of hot-headed officers who think tasing someone is a good way to show them who is boss. Sigh...

I've always said: pay a cop what he's really worth, and you'll be able to hire the best people for the job. (How much would they have to pay you to risk your life being shot while at work?) It will also increase the applicant pool, so you can also weed out the zealots who are only in it for the power trip before they embarrass the entire department with an incident like this.

But no... Cops are among the worst paid civil servants. Not saying that all cops are bad (far from it!), but just think about how much better our police force as a whole could be if someone with the knowledge and patience of a surgeon were to take up law enforcement...

Man here in Holland the police is way past the point of 'losing credibility'.

This guy is being pulled over for broken tail-lights and not wearing a seatbelt and some other small things. He ignores the stop-sign, doesn't have a drivers license, big mouths and insults the officer, even tries to push the officer out his car and this fuckface gets away with it!

Man i sure as hell wish he was taken care of 'Steve-style'.
