Default Tests of 250Mw 660nm RED laser diode

Well, Just mounted Diode #2 in the test jig..
seems it really will do 250mw and more..
However, it mode hops quite a bit up above 275mw...
I am going to run this one set at 255mW for a few weeks ,,
    see what happens

    I did test diode #1
It was the guineypig for the sacrifice....
it did do well over 325mW , but before i could measure the current
It went COD as a backreflection from the lasercheck got it..
I must remember "always" to offset the sensor.,
Or, it might have been too cold as I had cooled it to 0c.
Oh well. next time I do this I'll use much lower current.

So, It is safe to assume 250mw for now. I didnt see or hear any hops.

I do need to do more tests..such as stability (mode hops) on my home made interferometer as it has a detector pick-off going to an audio amp.
Also need to plot power vs current..and wavelength too.
lasing threshold seems very low as well around 35ma..
And still has some red output all the way down to a few ma...
Hmm.. that'l make it hard for TTL modulation,..quite a swing.

Heres a pix comparing it to the 130mW..
    Guess which is which?

    That reminds me...
DO NOT EVER reflect the beam back into the laser lens..
This will kill these high-powered diodes
So be very careful when using mirrors and beam splitters.

Whats the spec on these diodes ?

If you look closely you will find my name on one of them...... 8)

    Hi Gold,,

    The diode is a Sony 250mw 658nm .
    < aprox >
    Ith : 50ma
    Iop : 130ma , 80mw
    Iop : 210ma , 150mW
    Iop : 300ma , 225mw
    Iop : 335ma , 250mw
    Vop : 2.5v
    ^p : 658nm
    emitter radiation angle : 9 x 17.5

I does burn , so gotto be extremely careful.

I am in the process of building new driver boards this weekend.
I am including the new opto blanking chip inside as well.
Not sure how this diode will like it...

But with the standard driver,, all seems well...It DOES mode
    hop at various powers ...so...
I guess maybe these will just end up as lasershow reds.
    Not sure yet...

    Well,
I have ran this diode under full blanking (below threshold) at 50percent duty cycle for 50 percent output for about 18hrs now..
She still puts out full power with no changes in performance.

Im starting to really like this diode
It still looks only twice as brite as the 100 / 130 mw units tho...

Turtle: it's still under construction...no price fixed asyet. We'll post here before anywhere else, no worries.

Still testing the limits on it....Stay tuned....

Hey Marconi that "heard mode hops" had me wondering.. When you do see a mode hop what happens ? Is it like my hopping green and produces 2 clean beams ?

Wait a minute if you have a device to listen to the laser, and you do the window bounce thing. Then mixing source signal to the recivied frequency gives you a laser listening device !

If you mix in the optics from http://www.abex.co.uk/sales/laser/ya...r/bae/item.htm with the device then we have the basis of a prototype.

Can't be bothered with all that Ive got too much to do, play with thoses 250s and get a stable unit and get it out as the MaXZY 250.

There are several people offering 100mw modules, but no way as good as yours (although a little cheaper). Having a 250mw to lead the range would be real nice...

Yeah, Basically what happens is the beam changes wavelength (jumps to the next wavelength)
For multimodes...I use a telescope and project it to view it...

    As with the hearing...
I use a high-speed photodetector and an audio-amp sample part of the beam and "listen" for the "clicks" when it hops.
This happens to most any "Diode" laser when you change temperature
    and operating current.

Well, I'm pretty much done testing on this particular diode...(Sony 250mW 658nm)

It is safe to assume a good 150 to 175mW continuous out of them..
    They were spec'd as 250mW peak...or 150mW CW...
Altho I have ran a few to there limits.. I just wasnt happy letting them go out at
higher powers (200+) and expect good lifetimes out of them..
    So...I have takin a few remaining samples and made-up (3) 150mW ..
One 130mW module was built and sold last week from one of these.

I am waiting for the 300mW diodes to show-up...
    Lets see how they perform...

I am also waiting for a few 635nm 35Mw diodes to show-up for a customer
who order a few 635 modules..
I am keeping one diode to beat it to death...

Nice work guys. Put me down for one when they are ready to go. I really like the one Yada got. 8)
