Technically, ILDA specs only require 2K modulation, their guidelines
for laser show creation recommend at least 15 points before the next color change...

Since most frames use 3-6 anchor points between color shifts, this isn't
    all that hard to meet.

Though Pangolin and other nicer packages allow higher modulation
frequencies since they expect most laserists to use AOMs/PCAOMs.

In essence, if your 1K modulation isn't looking nice, then you're not using
enough anchor points between visible/blank transistions.

Its funny that you mension that. I just figured that out.. duh.. I started to use 5 anchor points, and 5 blanking anchor points and the end of every line. It's making my hand drawn stuff look greaT!.. I'm running the cats a slower speeds (12-20K), and I have calibrated them for the 12k ilda pattern.

Merlin is a funny little software. It takes a lot of pre-planning for your shows and images. Hopefully once this project is complete, and I can make some cash, I'll splurge for a 1watt dpss, and a pangolin (hopefully used) system.

Any one here run any of LFI's Laser Rock shows?.. Are they worth it?..

I would personally say that commercially authored shows are only
worth it if you're getting paid for displaying it specifically and are on
a time crunch. (I.e. bring a catalog of commercial shows to a meeting,
and after the client selects a show, buy it then.)

Note: The prices of a few shows will quickly buy you a Pangolin system...
In fact, the Pangolin Intro is worth it just for the shows it provides!
It would cost you over two grand to buy all the shows it comes with
    alone.

With shows which are timed to music, you'll have to look at your
system specs first... Can your scansystem support SMPTE timebase?
If not, you're going back to days of the old film projectors which made
you press "play" at exactly the right time.

I generally prefer authoring my own. If your expecting insane graphics
from a show you bought, you're bound to be disappointed... That being
said, I've bought a few shows and I've been happy with them, but as
always its caveat emptor... A tip: I would never buy a show I haven't seen
already in person. Some commercial shows are bad, and I mean terribly bad.
LFI is a reputable name with skilled artists who do a good job of making
frames which play well on ILDA tuned scansystems... though I know
that they specifically tune for 24k/30k systems so the Cat's 18K won't
play to the show's strong points.

Oh really?.. Medialas says the cats are able to scan 30k at 7 degrees, I have yet to figure out the scan angle, so I keep mine tuned down. I also have a set of G124's that work pretty sweet, but I have yet to get them past 8k.

I have been looking at those pangolin LD2000 CDrom show players, they will play the LFI shows w/ music tracks, although I have heard that LD2000 for the computer will play shows with music tracks.

I have not really thought about the commerical show aspect of the business, I will mostly be doing nightclub work, and I might run a laser rock show at a local theater. I guess the commerical stuff would be good for daytime work.

I really need to start learning to build my own DPSS laser heads, I would really like to take a 35 - 40watt 808 pump and turn it into something that shows about 3-5 watts of air cooled power.

Can you use flashlamp style Nd:Yag Laser w/ a (big)piece of KTP for a mega greenie?..

It depends on how far your throw is... I guess if you're in a large arena
or have a small scan surface 7* would work fine. but I generally say 15*
is the lower limit of what you'd want to scan at... I think the Cats can
do correct rendering of the ILDA 12k pattern at 18k at a more reasonable
    20* angle...

For the cost of the LD2k CD, I'd definitely get Intro instead. You gain
more flexibility at the same cost.

The flashlamp style KTP doubled YAG lasers tend to have a
rather large beam diameter when collimated, you need special larger
(and dielectric) mirrors to run them... They're very nice, but due to
the extra mass of the mirrors, you generally won't be doing high resolution
    graphics with them...
