    Bear me in mind for an 88 tube only Steve if there is one going cheap?

    Done as a preregulator, they work just fine. Done as the sole current limiting element, well, you'll have issues. They have a huge inductance, and lots of stored energy when in series with a plasma tube. Yet done carefully, this design of PSU will usually fit in the OEM LEXEL laser heads.

    Laser ionics used a water cooled graphite resistor as the preregulator on their power supplies, this is not a new method.
