    I have a real problem with the last sentence. They say if it's leaking IR, you shouldn't point it at your eye. I say that you shouldn't point it at your eye no matter what...

    Otherwise, good article though.

    The actual technical note is a much better read than the article, as is typical with most news site that try and explain anything technical. I recommend you skip the to chase and just go for the paper http://www.nist.gov/customcf/get_pdf.cfm?pub_id=906138

    And of course it has a big safety section on proper laser safety

    On a final note, Sam G now has made it into a NIST paper
