Default Anybody want a Heavenly job?

Make sure your insurance is paid up, tower work ties with salmon fishing as the most dangerous civilian job in the US. Bomb Defusing is far safer.

    see:

First time I watched it, I had a panic moment.

Yikes, freeclimbing. What a horrible waste of a highly trained technician.

Yeah, there was quite a stink raised about that video over the past few days. And for sure it's nerve-wracking to watch that dude in the video. I agree the guy is an idiot...

Actually though, he's right: OSHA rules do allow it. Or more appropriately, OSHA rules do not apply for companies that have less than 15 employees, so it's not so much that they allow it as he can legally ignore it if he's self-employed.

However, most tower owners expect you to use 100% tie-off anyway, regardless of whether you're a freelance climber (and thus exempt from OSHA) or not. But since the work is almost always performed unsupervised, you have people like this guy taking short cuts. Not something I'd want to bet my life on...

Plus think of the potential damage if he hit (and broke) a guy wire on the way down...

At the ~5:00 mark where he transitioned to outside.....Had to turn it off and go take a Xanax.

Yikes. That'd be a scary job.

the only tower I have been on was about the same height but the elevator went to the level we were working on... that guy is nuts though...

Ive worked on a lot of roofs too with no railings or anything, not quite as scary but scary none the less

it must be difficult to climb up that when your balls keep getting in the way.

There is a really good show called worlds toughest fixes. One of the episodes was a 2000 foot tower antenna replacement. It was hard for me to watch.

The difference between balls and stupid, is when you have balls you know two things:
    1. The laws of physics.
    2. Your limits.
    3. The limits of your gear and those around you.

In his case, about 12 seconds of thinking on the way down if he goofs, and hitting at about 130 miles per hour.

There is one worse job, greasing the guy wires by hand. It is done every few years on the big towers.

When I was younger I did not mind climbing if I had safety gear. I'd call it quits at 250 feet. I spend 7.5 years working in a glass sided building at 179 feet, with floor to ceiling windows, so now I hate to even look over the edge.
