Dar303 speculates it could be a military/Nasa laser.

    LOL!

It's a diode doughnut. Basically all the lasers aim at the center. Probably used to pump a crystal or heat something.

I can guarantee each one of those diode arrays(the little gray squares in the middle.) make at least 250 if not 1000W a piece.

    here's the optics part:

"was too powerful and kept cracking the Yag crystals"

    and the controllers:

says per controller up to 4kW max and there are 4 units to drive this this doughnut.

    A little web-snooping gives this from 2004:
"The U.S Air Force announced the award of the contract to Nuvonyx Sept. 1, and said it's in the process of paying the company $3.7 million to begin research on the next generation of laser diode pump systems."

    http://www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/s...20/story6.html

The name of the seller, "AerospaceSurplusNet" is also a clue...

I so want that stuff to go into my future Mad Professor Lab!
I swear, when I win the 100.000.000 Euro lottery I'll travel round the US with a semitrailer just buying stuff like this!
