My last employer had DOT numbers on the cargo haulers, the big Ford truck that was moving lights and speakers with what amounts to a vastly oversize horse trailer, but nothing other then the logo and not for hire on the vans.
I imagine the legal magic happens when it comes to getting insurance.

Never having a clear answer on this, I always took a rental through the weight station when crossing state lines, never heard a peep, always got a green light, and never got a letter in the mail from Ryder demanding more money.
However if I was staying in state and it was a plain white truck, I'd pass right by. Never took heat on that either. When Ohio's stations are open, they usually have a trooper attached during daylight hours.
