So, I guess what I really want to know is will they tame one of those long open can 660 DVD diodes so that the beam fits on the scanner mirrors?

With no problems. One thing is the excess glue needs to be scraped off the diode so that it sits flat in the mount.

I should point out that the beam is bigger than 1 x 1.5mm ( maybe around 2 x 2mm ), but very little power is in the fringes outside this area.
