Default GE 4921 to marine battery

    Hi,

A friend was looking at installing some floodlights on a duck boat and was looking at using....

    http://www.servicelighting.com/GE-49...ent-Light-Bulb

GE 4921 100W 12.8V bulb and connect it directly to the marine battery with an on/off switch. Would this work ok or no?

Right now they're looking at the GE 4921 and the GE 4595 which seem to be about the same, just different shape.

    Any thoughts?

Yeah, no reason that wouldn't work, though I would use a relay to switch the current if using more than one, they'll draw 8.5A each.

If it's for deck illumination he might be better using something other than incandescent lamps. Battery life might be an issue running a few of those things.

Why don't you just go get some off road lights? With these you are going to have to make the lighting holder and mount, come up with the connector.

I would just buy two sets of cheap off road lights and call it a day.

I was talking to the guy today and he mentioned he'd have to build a mount/enclosure for it and I guess he doesn't mind the tinkering. From what I understand, the plan is just one light mounted on the front for a little light early in the mornings. Something like this...

I'll mention the off road lights as an option but it may be one of those hobby things where the cheapest/quickest route isn't always what they're after. I think we can all relate to that.

With a lifetime of only 300 hours, that thing must run HOT. Might I suggest using automotive HID instead?

^^^ +1 a 35W HID would be as bright as that, give a nicer light, last years and use one third of the juice ^^^

Even the automotive LED offroad lights are killer now. I recently got some VisionX Solstice thing for my bike. It's easily as bright as any HID lamp I've seen, uses less power and doesn't need a ballast.
