    Default Options on Red - Please Read

    now were all desperately seeking the anwser to high powered red.

    now if we take the 445 diode, here is the data sheet -

    if you look at the beam angle it reads typ of 12 and 40

    now using simons prims we can correct this to a very nice beam.


    so if we look at the 250mw 640nm and look at the beam angle it reads typ 11 and 40.

    maybe i am missng some important information here but they pretty identical to the 445 diode we all use. why has no one considered using this diode.

    why can we just use simons prisms to correct this beam?

    not looked into cost.

    all people seem to want is watts and watts of power for pennies and its just not going to happen. we have been very luck with 445 so put the money towards red.

    Isn't the size of the emitter the key issue here ?

    I have a red led here that does 12x12 degrees easily, but I doubt you can convert it into a a usable beam

    It's the beam parameter product, look it up, it has been discussed all over the place.
    beam diameter and divergence are tied together as a constant.

    Not all sources with similar divergence are a like.
    A laserdiode with a divergence of 20x20 deg can be collimated in a tightest beam you could imagine.
    An of the shelf flashlight with a divergence of 20x20 deg is just that, a flashlight.

    It boils down to their emitter size, 5mm for the flashlight a few um for the diode.

    In other words : specsheet is worthless without emitter size.

    i noticed on the red laser data sheet for laser show and display is what the diode was intended for
    i have a feeling dave or simon have already looked at these and nothing usable come from it, a bit like the 500mw 638 fiasco that never happend, and they looked like you were not going to get anything better than >2.5mrad. shame andyf97 did not reviel the lens he had that was supposed to sort the beam out

    Combining 2 150mW optnext diodes, will give you a better beam and higher power at similar costs.
