turned up the current, reduced diode life in some cases.

Pushes the diode to death in others.

It is somewhat of a lottery.

It is a fair bet the manufacturer has already set the pointer to the maximum safe current these days. Early pointers were backed off 50% to ensure lifetime.

"pot" is short for potentiometer. it is a little electronic component on the driver board of your laser. To adjust this yourself requires basic knowledge of electronics and basic knowledge of a multi meter. a pot adjusts the current to your device. alot of them have hair triggers. meaning event the slightest movement can go from full off to full on. do some research on line to find out about them before you decide to adjust yours.
