I did 3W RGB when it was naturally foggy - and it was all over the place. But 80 metres is quite a distance - 5W and lots of haze sound about right.

thanks for your comments pple.
As you might have noted I am a newbie for lasers. Beam shows look very impressive but was not aware that one needed the medium like haze to operate.
Of course I need to look into the issue on a seperate note & consider laser beam shows for internal use only.
What is the recommended power to shoot an animation display onto a huge wall where the distance between the projector & wall is about 500 meters?
Thanks to all for your input.
Nick
Single colour green - 2.5 watts. 500 metres is a long way.
If you want RGB, probabvly nearer to 10 watts will be needed.
ok, thanks
is anyone aware of any table which provides the distance to power ratio for both laserbeam and graphic displays?
500 metres.... thats a massive distance.

Also I hope you're up on safety.
All this talk of beam shows with 5W lasers is starting to make me uneasy for someone who seems to know so little.
If you're planning on using huge powers then keep the beams overhead in accordance with ILDA safety recommendations for overhead shows (they lay down minimum distances over head and away from balconies etc).
It would be seriously worth you attending an approved safety course before using such huge powers and absolutely essential before you even consider any audience scanning moves with such large lasers as its essential you can calculate MPE accurately before attempting to audience scan with those powers.
In terms of graphics it works the other way. Cleaner the air, better the light travels. But also the colour and type of projection surface need to be considered.
I was projecting text on a chimney (dark bricks) using 5W 532nm Coherent - distance was only about 50 metres and it was nicely bright. But 500 meters - hmm...
Green is the best in terms of visibility.
I can only second Pelosh on its 1.6W RGB, I just acquired one and that's really top quality, you really can't have more for this price tag. And stay away from Laserworld, especially these crappy Proline series...
But anyway with such a low power you'll be desappointed if you use it outdoor in as much space. You should better rent one...
Also, consider that for animations over a long distance you need not only powerful laser modules, but also good beam specs - which will cost you more yet again...
Consider attending a LEM and see what your getting into.
