    Default FPS Advice

    Hi,

Just wondered if you guys can give me some advice on Beam Cues and FPS.

I know that on graphics, higher than 30fps is desirable although anything above 15 fps is acceptable if slightly flickery.

I was just wondering what the situation is with beam cues as not having a laser I can't check this for myself. I'm kind of imagining you can probably go much lower with beams as movement probably makes any flickering much less noticeable on complex frames.

The thing is, what are the frame rates for beams? ie:

    1. What level is preferable

    2. What level is the acceptable minimum that still provides a good show?

    For beams:
Depends what you want to do.
Personally 18-20kpps is plenty for anything sensible.

    Even 2kpps can look good...

I'll let you work out the FPS per cue...
    - There is no such word as "can't" -
    - 60% of the time it works every time -

I run beams at 50fps sometimes because they don't have as many points. They extra frame rate makes rotations and effects manipulations look much smoother.

When audience scanning, higher fps is generally eye safer.

Assuming that each frame is drawn differently than its predecessor, pulse-exposure to the eye is shorter.

I have some complex frames that are running at 14 fps.

Do you think these will still display well?

The last thing I want to do is put frames that display badly or cremate scanners.

For aerial beams I sometimes drop the scan rate right down to minimum, it can produce a very effective trippy rainbow effect.

    Interesting.

The worst of mine hits 14fps at times and 15fps the rest. It looks a little slow and jerky in the preview window but then again its a preview render and not a scanned image.

The scanners are set (software only given no laser) to 30K.

At the begining of this sequence the scanrate is 12k (note BAM in use for audience and the broadcast camera this was filmed on)

Ending with photon torpedos and heavy artillery

    Very nice Display Doc.

Do you buy any chance know what the FPS rate was?
