or am I really missing things here?
this is an image of the simplest, low power dpss build possible, like the glued together crystals i mentioned above

you have opened a BIIIIG can of worms here lad. there are at least 2 zillion pages to read and you have to choose over a thousand different designs. Sam's laser FAC is always a precious resource.

i wanted to do the same thing some time ago, but after much resarch i concluded that it is easier to buy a ready made one, if i want to be honest about my skills, my time and my money

the simplest way to go around this is to get a glued-together kit of YVO4 and KTP crystals and end pump it with a small (maybe 300-500mw 808nm diode). this will give you some greenlight and you will just have the optics to consider (but maybe this is not real dpss building, is it?) an example of this sort of setup can be found in every nasty high power green laser pointer out there. But it does seem a bit counter intuitive to buy a pointer, take it apart and then reassemble it in a different way. or you can get a ready made one like this one, http://cgi.ebay.com/Nd-yvo4-Ktp-Glue...item1c1787b10a (no intention to advertise, i just came up with it on fleabay)

or, if you feel more ambitious, you can get this kit that has everything pretty much sorted out for you. http://cgi.ebay.com/BIG-GREEN-LASER-...item3cb349976e

then you will only have to worry about power supply, tec cooling - heating and controlling those tecs

and if you used the search function of PL you would have found this one as well http://www.photonlexicon.com/forums/...highlight=snlo

this thread contains a very usefull tool for calculating laser cavities etc, but i will not tell you where it is (there are a few clues though)
