Possibly something interesting to hack on?

Maybe. Depends on what "Openlase" offers and what you want to do.

    Lightbulb

Intresting; too bad for all the crap talking on Youtube.

To my ignorant eyes though, everthing he demonstrates looks to be available in other software packages. Someone please enlighten me; except for being open source, which I know is an awesome thing, what is groundbreaking that I must have not seen?

maybe nothing really new but he is just combining a lot of stuff and extending laser projection as a medium.
For example it crossed my mind to make a version of OLA that worked as a laser version op powerpoint: LaserPoint. You would simply use inkscape to draw the slides like you would in powerpoint and then use OLA to step through them. But I never got around to it. Now there is this guy doing a full project presentation with a laser projector with even a cool 3D rotating slide transition with animated slides. I think that is pretty cool.

here are more ways to play pong with a laser:

I didn't see anything ground breaking but I think that it is Linux based which is something new, or at least rare.

Indeed, nothing really new, but cool to have the code available.

If its open source surely that means the programme is going to be free?

Thats going to be a big deal for anyone looking for cheap / free software.

As for the programme itself, there's nothing new that I'm seeing. Dr. Lavas has something that traces live to laser doesn't he (?), and as for everything else, sound reactive cues and abstract generators and text are all seen in the major programmes.

Great release for the free community but nothing groundbreaking for everyone else.
