If anyone wants to pursue this:

    http://www.photonicsonline.com/artic...S-756-PCB-0001

May be cheaper than a spectrometer, and it's only the center wavelength you're after right?

Great find. I'll get in touch with them now.

Nothing back from them yet; but found this:
$50 sensor, $500 for the PCB+sensor (contains temp. stuff as well)
    http://www.sas.org/E-Bulletin/2001-1.../labNotes.html
(That article is nearly 10 years old mind...)

    Will keep you posted.

I'd jump at the opportunity of binning these diodes off on wavelength... just need the sensor

Ok, EUR 500 for a single piece, EUR 460 each for 10.
    4-6 week lead time.

    Hmm...

A cadmium-sulfide photocell peaks at around 515nm, similar to the human eye. A circuit could possibly be built to detect the photocell's resistance (using wheatstone bridge - thx Steve) to measure the slight difference between 445 and 460 nm. The CdS cell costs about $2. It might not be accurate enough tho. I dunno. It'd take some research. The ambient temperature and humidity would have to be controlled. Probably in an environmental chamber. too much to think about tonite. n/m. nitey-nite.. zzz .
