Default kvant dicho vs laserwave tests

    hi all
    just done some comparison tests
    with kvant vs laserwave dichos.
the tests were just on the mostly used red and blue dichros
the laserwave dichros well you all know what format they come in,
the kvant dichros that pelosh sent me to try are 25mm x 12mm and 2mm thick
as you will see from the tests that each have their pros and cons
like laserwave are better at passing where as kvant are slightly better at reflection
this was done for just a bit of fun ,
let the results do the talking
if the layout looks odd it was cut and pasted from a doc file and does not paste to forum well

    1)
Kvant red dichro tested @ 642nm.

    Reflect 642
    power in 765mw
    = 5mw loss ,reflect = 99.34 %
    Power out 760mw
    --------------------------------------------------------------
    Kvant red dichro pass green

    Power in 844mw
    = 20mw loss = pass = 96.31 %
    Power out 818
    --------------------------------------------------------------
    Kvant red dichro pass blue

    Power in 1768mw
    = 110mw loss = pass = 88.12 %
    Power out 1558mw
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kvant blue dichro test. (note kvant blue dichro does not pass red @ 642nm)

    Reflect 445nm blue

    Power in 1782mw
    = 77mw loss = reflect = 95.67 %
    Power out 1705mw

    Kvant blue dichro pass green

    Power in 876mw
    = 40mw loss = pass = 95.31 %
    Power out 835mw

Laser wave red dichro test @ 642nm (note laserwave red dichro does not pass blue @’445nm)

    Reflect 642nm

    Power in 764mw
    = 16mw loss = reflect = 97.90 %
    Power out 748mn

    Laserwave pass green

    Power in 910mw
    = 28mw loss = pass = 96.92 %
    Power out 882mw

Laserwave blue dichro test ( note laserwave blue passes red ok )

    Reflect blue @445nm

    Power in 1810mw
    = 98mw loss = reflect = 94.58 %
    Power out 1712mw

    Laserwave blue dichro pass green

When God said “Let there be light” he surely must have meant perfectly coherent light.

    Thank you.

    I just needed this information.

Looks like the swisslass I tested is still the best dichro.
But the kvant is the cheapest.

Default So what are the best dichros for Blue>Green>Red?

I'm a noob here, building my first ILDA RGB, so any advice would be most appreciated. My apologies if I am hijacking this thread, but it seems appropriate.

In my rig, Blue is 445: first because it is the most powerful, can punch through 2 dichros with ease, assuming the dichros can deal with 445 to begin with. Uh, right?

Green is the usual 532, also powerful (300mw from O-Like)

Red is LOCs from sleds, 660 or something? Still wrestling with these.

(I am greatly constrained by the small size of the custom chassis for this. Photos follow once I am done.)

From what I have been reading, I need to change the order if I want to deal with 445?

I am currently using dichros from CT lasers and Dave, and losing lotsa power via reflection, i.e., dichros not passing 445 properly.

I guess that since the 445 has power to burn (so to speak), I am most interested in maximizing reflection of the green and red, but it would be nice if I didn't lose most of my blue in the process.

Dave recommended OSLS and Kvant; will research these next.

Thanks much for the data above, but I'm still confused. What are others doing regarding laser order and dichros?

    Thanks...Mike

It might be a pain if you have space constraints but before buying new dichros, try to test them at different angles, or angle tuning. The best angle isn't always 45 degrees. If you look at my ghetto fabulous thread, most of my lasers have never been at 45s to the dichro, but I use a mirror bounce for better near field alignment which has it's own losses.

Because red is the most expensive en precious color you should place the red the closest to your galvo's.
Because a reflect green pass blue is hard to get with low losses the best option is to put the blue laser next en last the green.

The best dichro's I ever testes was the swisslas dichro with 1% loss average
the dichro with the best price/quality ration is the in my opinion the Kvant Dichro.

It is a known issue with the LW reflect red dichros also reflecting alot of 445.
The old LW dichros don't suffer this problem and you can still get hold of them from some people. I bought a 25mm one very recently from Rob Stanwax as my red is closest to the scanners.

If you can change the order of green and blue, then you can use the dichro from the Casio projectors as they have a pass blue, reflect green one which you should be able to get off someone on the forums for cheap.

You are using Bonetti's defense against me, ah?

I thought it fitting, considering the rocky terrain.

Interesting to stumble across this today as I have been thinking for a few days to ask a question about dichros.

As a general rule, it appears that the "Cadillac" of scanners are Cambridges, the "Cadillac" of modules are "Kvants", Newport seems to be regarded at the tops for optic hardware (Thorlabs is up there too) but, I've been wondering about who makes the best quality dichros. What brand gets people all hot and bothered as being the best?

I'm not familiar with swisslas & most of what I have is Laserwave I believe. But... is that a bit like saying Laserwave is the "DT40" and Swisslas is the "Cambridge" in the dichro world?

I would more say Arctos is the Cadillac of modules... unless you get to Jenlas, but that would be Ferarri I think.

    Good point...

How about, "Of the more commonly seen modules"

the high efficiency dichros i use / sell now have nearly perfect results.

ref R percentages are in the >98% areas. losses are obviously there, but immeasurable. on 5W of 640 my losses were visible but low enough where the meter had a tough time registering it. probably on the order of 1% or so. i think the biggest loss reading i got was ~20-30mW range.

Ref B (445) was nearly exactly the same. ~98% range of reflection. if not more. losses of transmission were (im trying to do all of this from memory) in the neighborhood of 3%

i have used *MANY* other filters from many other companies. i have not had anywhere near the same results as i am getting now.
