waveplate help

Does a 1/2 waveplate need to be exactly centered with the laser to work correctly? If the laser is translated a couple mm from the center of the waveplate, is the polarization affected?

shouldn't make a difference.

from what i understand only rotating a waveplate will make a difference.

tilt or x y axis movement should not make a difference
