Ah ok. I'd always thought the 71 sacrificed power for a smaller emitter/stripe and the 73 gave more power at expense of a bigger emitter/stripe.
And I thought from the pre-release talk the Oclaro gave the best of both worlds - smaller stripe and higher power!

So that's ultimately all I'm looking for from it. But maybe I've been mistaken all this time

You are using Bonetti's defense against me, ah?

I thought it fitting, considering the rocky terrain.

Well if that is the case them maybe they have as the divergence is just a hair less than the G71 and the power(at least rated power) is much greater so if the P73 is worse divergence than the G71 then it would hold up to that statement but the down side is we will not be dropping the correction optics of the Mitsu diodes for a more simple one like the 445's because of this at least that was what I was thinking was going to be a plus of these diodes.

I have also heard a rumor that Mitsubishi is coming out with a 700mW 638nm closed can diode as a new addition to the line up. Not sure if and when this will actually materialize. Maybe someone else has heard the same and could confirm this?

    Couple of observations/ comparisons.....

I dug up my notes on the 73 and it looks like the power levels are neck in neck with the 63193 at the same test currents. This is good!

Next the 73 spec sheet currents are 650 typ 800 max. The 63193 currents are 900 typ and 1100 max. So either mitsubishi is more conservative in rating their diodes or the oclaro can be driven harder CW. Because we don't usually have 100% duty cycle in a projector we may be able to drive these at several % over spec with good life.

I like where you're going with this Woody

I think so.. Even if we take the 73 and 63193 spec sheets at face value. The 63193 is 200mW more powerful CW and the emitter is aprox. 2/3 the size. Win Win. Also, as a point of comparison, spec sheet to spec sheet, the 63193 is over 2X more powerful than the 71 with the same approximate emitter. From DTR's beam shots the spot looks cleaner too. Well have to see how that pans out after cylinders...

Time will tell if the two companies rate their diodes in the same way.....

I think that we need to see the round over currents for the three diodes and then the spec sheets will be less significant. There is no way of determining if either company is being more conservative and when using these in projectors the vast majority of us will run them at least a little beyond the spec sheets as well.

I have another thought. As THE advocate for spatial filtering, I have been asked how much power is lost in the filtering process and although I would estimate less than 10%, I have always down played this as "bad light" that only serves to reduce contrast and produce halos. But, if these diodes have less halo then even if you still want to filter (and maybe you will be able to get away without now), the output readings DTR reports are nearly all in the core and that's very good.

I graphed my results of the 73 against DTR's oclaro. Unfortunately, I only went to 1.2A. But, its easy to see the Knee of the oclaro from the graph. I guess it would be better to graph against the G71 because the emitter is aprox the same. I don't have the data on the 71. I believe the max I have driven the G71 is 650ma anyway.

so , more importantly, who has dual 9mm kits for sale with beam correction , for the 445nm's?
and who has quad 5.6mm kits for sale, for the new oclaro red diodes?

    Carlos,

With all do respect, that is not more important to this thread. The beauty of these diodes is that they are direct replacements for existing diodes both regarding mounting and optics. You can retrofit these into existing modules or if you are purchasing or building new then you can use these instead. I'm sure someone can point you to suppliers for these other components. I'm not familiar with all of them.

If your just trying to express enthusiasm and mean to do this in a lighthearted way, that's cool. I'm enthusiastic too, but I don't know where to send you.

Dave and Andy come to mind, for hardware.. DTR of course sells the diodes (and mounts too).

There's also Meredith Instruments, Laser 66, One-Stop-Laser-Shop.. I'm sure I'm leaving somebody out.
For complete "kits" I don't know, you may have to shop around and find the different pieces & parts that you need ..
but yeh .. back on topic ..
