    Default Weird MIDI Problem QS

    Hey Guys and Gals-

I just got a new AKAI MPK49 to use with Live Pro, LD2K and QS.

when i try to map the upper right hand rotary knobs to things like X angle, Y angle, X rotation and Y rotation in QS (i havent tried Live Pro yet) the commands are backwards! lol. (and i havent had a beer yet tonight!) in other words, i map X angle, the commands are recvd, but when i turn the knob to the RIGHT (clockwise) The X angle (and/or rotation) goes DOWN or negative, to the left (or counterclockwise). when i turn the knob counter clockwise (to the left) the values for X, Y angle and/or rotation goes UP or to the Right (clockwise).

any ideas? im sure its something stupid im overlooking, but its drivin me LOONEY TUNES!!

    Question

Does it have any internal jumpers you can check?

I see the same problem with my Korg nano, drives me nuts. A midi mapping app could inverse it. I don't know of a way to reverse it in QS.

    Default midi

if your midi controller is anything like the novation
you should have loads of pages that are set up as templates
you will need to set up one of those pages for qs using akai editor software
and dump it to the controller but when you edit the two controls that give you a problem
the numbers for that control would normally be 0-127 will need changing to 127-0
to invert that control ,thats how i got around the problem with my novation
when i had back to front laser position controls

you shoud be able to do simalar thing with the korg control editor too
but its not defo as i have not tried it with either of those controllers

just the novation, and my pc joystick
    hope it helps
When God said “Let there be light” he surely must have meant perfectly coherent light.

    Hey everyone-

I *think* i figured it out (gotta try again today to make sure it wasnt just a freak thing)

because the rotary knobs sit at "0" and can go negative and/or positive, you have to start the addressing of that mapping at ~63 for the midi channel. (0-127. 63= ~1/2). i think it recognizes 63 as its "home" or "0" position. Therefore, when mapped, 0-63 is to the left (as i turn also) and 64-127 is to the right (as i turn also).

I tried it last night in LP, and it worked. However i want to fire everything up today and try it in QS also. I knew it had to be something stupid i was doing wrong. *hopefully* this fixes it.

Now i just need to figure out how to map the drum pads on the controller for different channels than the keys. Right now, the drum pads (1-12) have the same note info as the Keys 1-12 which seems dumb in my opinion. Why would anyone want those the same? But anyway, thats my next chore. As you can all tell, im nnot a MIDI expert!

Anyone have any good sources to learn basic MIDI theory?

    Hey Marc -

Looks like you broke the code on the rotary encoders!

Luckily, vertical faders on most MIDI controllers I've seen are USUALLY easier to deal with, since they USUALLY "zero out" at the bottom - USUALLY!!

From what I've seen so far - at least for laser controller uses - it seems like it's freqently easier to just map keys from within our laser apps than it is to try to use some sort of template provided by the controller.

I don't have the software in front of me right now, but I believe that with both QuickShow and LivePRO, you can go into the MIDI settings, and specify the key # to use as the start key for the cue assignments.
With that option, you wouldn't necessarily need to change the key # reference on the controller itself - just change where the Pangolin software starts using the keys.

    I'm definitely a MIDI "tinkerer" -
I've got a couple of rather "different" MIDI-control setups I'm incorporating with one of the laser shows I'm currently working on.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to this year's SELEM, so the unveiling may have to wait a while!

MIDI can be a bit overwhelming at first, because there is a LOT more controller messages to deal with than DMX, but can be a lot of fun to work with once you get the basics down.
    This might help a bit:

    Have fun!!

    P.S.

I've got several MIDI apps & utilities that might come in handy, for both PC and iPhone.

I can send you links if you're interested...
